It would be me alone on a beautiful island with a few books and some movie DVDs.

It depends from person-to-person. For me it would be marriage. The live-in system is just like marriage; it's just that you have not given a legal name to the relationship. Marriage, on the other hand, is more institutional. I do not see problems in either.
