She slipped out of the bed and tip-toed slowly across the hallway to the room across hers.
She pushed the door and peeked inside.
"I can see you Aisha." Dilshad said, smiling.
Aisha ran and jumped into the bed by her.
"Dadi, can I sleep with you tonight?" She asked, hopefully.
"What happened?" Dilshad asked the small girl.
"The lightening and thunder scared
me." She said, her lower lip quivering.
Dilshad hugged her. "You know you're safe. The lightening and thunder can't harm you here."
"But I want to stay with you." Aisha pouted cutely.
"Well, I guess-"
"Yay!" She gave her a big smile, clearly showing the dimple which she inherited from both her parents.
Aisha got under the covers and snuggled against Dilshad feeling much safer.
After staying quiet for a moment, she turned to Dilshad again. "Dadi, can you tell me a story?"
"A story? Haven't you heard all of the stories? What else is there for me to tell you?"
Aisha pondered for a moment and then looked at Dilshad excitedly for a moment. "Tell me about my ammi and abbu!"
Dilshad looked a little surprised. "You want to hear about your parents? Why?"
She shrugged her little shoulders. "I don't really know anything about then, and you never talk about them."
Dilshad hesitated for a moment.
"Please." Aisha begged giving her trademark puppy face.
Dilshad could never say no to that face, when she looked at her with those big brown eyes.
She looked so much like her mother. Not only with her eyes, but also with her straight and silky black hair. But her mannerisms and behavior were almost exactly like her father. Aisha was a perfect combination of her parents.
"Okay," Dilshad said, agreeing, " Lets start."
"Before your parents met, your abbu was always quiet, grumpy, and reserved. He could never share his feelings with anyone. Your ammi was the complete opposite. She was always smiling and making sure others were smiling too. She cared so much about everybody. Even your Akdu abbu." Dilshad smiled sadly, remembering her son and the woman he loved so much.
"Your abbu thought he had his whole life planned. He thought he would find a simple, traditional girl, and get married. But your ammi entered his life and turned his so-called perfect world upside down. She was like a breath of fresh air for this house and this
family." Dilshad paused for a moment, fighting back tears.
Aisha looked at her and then leaned over to wipe her tears away. "Don't cry, Dadi. You know I can't see tears in your eyes."
Dilshad smiled and kissed her forehead. "Your abbu always used to say the same thing."
Aisha looked at her. " You don't have to go on if you don't want to."
"No, no. I'm fine." Dilshad, said smiling. "Lets continue with the story. Where was I? Oh yes. When your parents first met, they fought all time about every little thing. They were as different as the sun and moon. Your abbu was a perfectionist, just like you," she pinched Aisha's cheek. "He always had a strict schedule and hated any interruption in his life. Your ammi on the other hand was always full of surprises and took what life gave her without complaint."
"If they were so different, then why did they get married?" Aisha said confused.
Dilshad smiled affectionately at her. "Yes, it's true they seemed to hate each other at first." She paused remembering them arguing and fighting. But no matter what, they would always make-up after.
"As time went on, however, they both slowly started understanding each other more. They both suffered from old wounds and understood pain. The only difference was that your abbu hid his hurt by being emotionless, while your ammi hid her pain by wearing a smile."
Aisha looked off into space thoughtfully for a second. "How did they fall in love?"
"Even I can't say for sure. It just happened. Love comes softly and sometimes people are unaware at first. Same with your parents. It took them a while to see the love they had and to then accept it. Especially your abbu. He was 'emotionally challenged' as your ammi used to say." Dilshad chuckled a little.
Then she became thoughtful again. "He was always scared of love and never wanted to hurt anyone. But your ammi calmed his fears and he accepted the love that was there."
"Then was it a perfect fairytale?" Aisha asked.
"Well it took some struggles and trials, but they were finally united in the end. The reluctant prince and the beautiful princess. " Dilshad said smiling, reminiscing happy times. "They got married and then they got the best gift ever."
"What?"
"You, silly! I remember how happy your parents were, when they found out about your arrival. Your abbu took care of your ammi so much, catering to her every need. And he would constantly be talking about his little princess and that everything should perfect for her. When you were a baby they pampered you so much." Dilshad smiled at Aisha. "You have no idea how much they loved you."
Aisha asked a question she always had on her mind. "If they loved me so much, then why did they leave me?"
"Of course they didn't want to leave you, dear." Dilshad said, hugging her tightly. "Your parents loved you so much and would never have wanted to leave you. But their time on earth was up, and they had to leave. They knew you still had your whole life ahead of you."
Aisha slowly let the tears fall from her face. She never usually showed the pain she felt, but now she couldn't contain her emotions anymore.
Dilshad wiped away her tears. "Please don't cry. You know I can't see tears in your eyes."
Aisha sniffed. "What do you mean? I'm not crying."
Dilshad knowingly nodded her head. "You can try to hide your feelings from me, but I know you too well." Because you're just like Asad, Dilshad thought inwardly.
Dilshad went in. "Do you know that even in the face of death, your parents were together. Even death couldn't separate them. Though tragic, it was also beautiful to see their true love. "
Dilshad looked Aisha straight in the eye. "Your parents did love you, and don't ever think otherwise. Even though they might not physically be with you today, they are still a part of you, and are watching over you."
Dilshad smiled again. "Somewhere in heaven, your abbu and ammi are together and looking at their precious little girl." Dilshad pressed another soft kiss on her forehead.
She held her in her arms until she fell asleep. Then she tucked her under the blanket and smoothed back her silky hair.
Then she turned to the nightstand beside her and pulled out a picture.
Dilshad looked at it for a moment. "Why did you leave us and go? Don't you know how much your daughter needs you? Why can't you come back?"
Of course she got no response. They just stared back at her.
"Asad….Zoya…" Dilshad whispered.
Asad was looking handsome as usual, his dark brown eyes looking at her. Zoya was beautiful and smiling her big, wide smile.
As much as she wished them back, she knew that they were truly gone forever.
"Until we meet again," Dilshad said sadly, "Until we meet again."
————————————————————
Aisha had woken up again. She glanced over to see if Dilshad was asleep.
Once she made sure, she slipped out of the bed and walked to the window. The raining had stopped and the sky was clear again.
She looked up at the stars. At the heavens beyond them. Where her parents were.
Aisha closed her eyes. "God, please tell my parents that I love them, and that I know that they loved- no, love me too."
She then gave a blow away kiss to the sky. "This is for you, abbu and ammi."
