Being Woman – Being Human – The Fight for Bread and Roses – A Forum 32 Perspective
Smiriti Kalra as Suvreen Guggal in Suvreen Guggal Topper of the Year
They say be a human before you be a man or a woman. Must be a man who said this. For they would never be able to fathom what it takes to be a woman. And its not a biased opinion. Even a woman cannot understand what it takes to be a man. But equality, emancipation are some of the goals that women have fought for years to achieve. However, at some stage, it is a man's world after all.
Today, we celebrate International Women's Day. Wonder why one needs to assert oneself, to be acknowledged as one. Just being one should be enough. But in this man's world it took protests, that took place in 1857 (Yes, from Indian History perspective too it is an important year, for it had led to mutiny) by garment workers in textile mills to fight against inhuman conditions and low wages. And the date was 8th March. Then in 1908 unique slogan was coined, Bread and Roses, that symbolized economic security and better quality of life. Women did achieve some of the goals.

Even today, women are not as secure as they ought to be. Be it from rape and molestation, equal opportunity at work or just survive.
In Television and Films, there are campaigns to stop objectify women be it in item numbers or making movies and shows based on women. There are shows with only women crew as well. The awareness has surely increased.
Forum 32 salutes women and pays homage to them. Here are some of the women. Suvreen Guggal (Smiriti Kalra) plays a girl who fights for rights hers and other women while pursuing her true calling. Zoya Farooqui (Surbhi Jyoti), stands up for herself and has armed herself with pepper spray and karate to protect herself and others. Aayesha Kapoor (Shital Shah), is a tough woman cop, who stands equal in a predominantly man's job with her skills and intellect.
