I really liked the episode, especially the way they framed SP and Radha's past. Something that really impressed me was how they included all the logical details in Radha's story, when they could have just had her say that she found out SP was married. Instead, they specified that he was married with one kid and further, provided the exact birth dates of both Yash and Akash. This makes me happy that they are sort of very much in tune with the story they have told so far while inventing new plot lines. I also liked the way they framed the story because of a few things:
1. The relationship, though no doubt exploitative, was very much consensual which leaves room for SP's redemption, especially if we find that he did have some genuine feelings for Radha.
2. We don't know why SP left Radha, or why he suddenly turned so vicious against her. Was it just to deny ownership of the child he had fathered, to justify abandoning it? Was there a third party who didn't want them to be together?
3. The echo with Aarti-Prashant is unmistakable! This is possibly my favourite thing about this whole story idea. I feel like they are exploring all the themes they wanted to explore with Prashant's character, through SP in this story. How does a man who has fallen so low as to justify his own sins by accusing the woman he got pregnant of loose morals, get a second chance to redeem himself?
4. Did Gayatri know about the affair? Even if she didn't it is entirely possible that she knew in general that SP was not being faithful to her, and just took it in her stride... because that is what wives do. I mean with SP's virility it really means something that Gayatri didn't get pregnant again for so long after Pankaj. Clearly there was some shift in their marriage after he returned to her post-Radha.
5. Was Radha the only one? Because I think that is an important thing to think about... was SP really a casanova, or was there something special about Radha in particular that drew him to her?
Basically, I like the way Radha's story was told because while I could totally see how SP had gravely wronged her, and felt all the sympathy for her, it also made me curious to hear SP's side of the story, because it was written cleverly enough to sound like it had another side. I am not saying Radha is lying, but she just told what she knew. I am also not saying that anything SP could say would absolve him of his crimes, but I am interested to hear how this story plays out in his head.
I also really liked the mythological reference at the end, which I thought was very apt. However, I found it curious that neither Gayatri nor Aarti mentioned the fact that Parvati actually stops the poison from going into Shiva's system by holding his neck... and then dan dan dan... it is kept their for eternity by a snake that he winds around his neck. Neelakanth means blue throat and that is the complete story behind it, right? So why is everyone talking about taking the poison and nobody talking about the part when it was restricted from entering the whole system and poisoning it? I think this is significant.
At the surface, I think the poison is the truth itself, but to take it a little further, I think the poison in this situation is the responsibility for the truth, which as Gayatri said, all the other "gods" refused to take. The "gods" in this situation are SP and Radha. SP, of course refused to take responsibility for getting Radha pregnant and for the child that came out of their physical relationship, and now Radha refuses to take responsibility for denying Akash his birth right all of these years. I see these two as the devas and the asuras of the churning of the ocean. They both want the nectar, in SP's case a clean record of his honour and integrity, and in Radha's rights for her son without denying Akash, but are not willing to take the poison that comes with this "churning of the ocean," this push and pull between them. In the end I think it is going to be Yash who is the Shiva of this story and takes the poison, i.e. the responsibility, both for his father's crime against Radha and her child, and for his mother, Radha's crime against Akash and Gayatri. That is why I think they had Payal remark to him, specifically, how brave Shiva was.
In the same vein, I think Aarti is going to be his Parvati, who allows him to take the poison and save "samsara," but stops it from spreading all through out his body and destroying him. She will be the one to contain the poison because it is not in her power to drink it, that is, take responsibility for what happened with SP and Radha, while Yash is. What a stark connection this draws between Yash and Ansh, as both of them were abandoned by their fathers while still in the womb. How is Yash going to feel about his father when he realises that?
An Aside: I love the way they showed Palak telling Ansh about their dadaji's pujas. Although we may forget it, Ansh and Aarti haven't even been with the family a year yet, and it seemed so natural for Palak to still be telling him how things happen in their home.
Is there going to be another maha episode tomorrow?
