ABCD - Any Body Can Dance
By Taran Adarsh, 7 Feb 2013, 20:18 hrs IST
The first time I heard the title of his new movie, I asked Remo D'Souza, can anybody [and everybody] dance? But you get the response while surfing television channels: Dance-based shows have become a prerequisite for the programming department of most channels. From kids to young couples to even senior citizens, these dance-based shows feature just about anyone and everyone with the passion for dance. There's no 'age limit', frankly. Come to think of it, music and dance are an integral part of our culture and day-to-day life. We love dancing, don't we? Dancing on the streets, during weddings, birthday celebrations, festivals... we also break into a dance when India wins a crucial cricket match against a strong opponent.

Bollywood doesn't have the tradition of making out-and-out dance-based movies, like Hollywood does with amazing regularity. At a point of time, B. Subhash did attempt a film or two starring Mithun Chakraborty [DISCO DANCER, DANCE DANCE]. Also NACHE MAYURI, featuring Sudha Chandran. But ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE is the first of its kind that's set against the backdrop of a dance competition. Does it ring a bell? Does it borrow from the STEP UP series? Perhaps, Remo may be motivated by the Hollywood film franchise, but he Indianizes it well enough, garnishing it with emotions that we can identify with and of course, choosing some of the best dancers for pivotal parts, besides casting Prabhu Dheva and Ganesh Acharya. Plus, this one's in 3D.

Of course, there are hiccups [more on that later], but the triumph of the underdog, if attempted with conviction, seldom fails. And ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE does have its share of moments that work!

For Vishnu [Prabhu Dheva], dance is more than a passion -- it's the reason he lives! So when he finds himself thrown out from the dance academy he himself set up by his manipulative business partner [Kay Kay Menon], it feels like the oxygen has been sucked out from the air he breathes. Heart-broken, Vishnu decides to give up dance and leave Mumbai forever.

However, the night before his departure, he witnesses a most amazing sight -- a group of raw talent preparing for the upcoming dance competition during the Ganeshotsav. An annual festival that pits Mumbai's best dance groups against each other. Watching the amazing dancers helps Vishnu arrive at a decision. He decides to take this disparate group under his wing, help them overcome their personal rivalries and past demons and turn them into India's best dance squad!

Ideally, a well-known choreographer would make his directorial debut with a dance-based film, but after making a statement on the education system in F.A.L.T.U. [his first Hindi film, after attempting a Bengali film], Remo's second Hindi outing ABCD ' ANY BODY CAN DANCE revolves around dance and dancers. Naturally then, ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE boasts of some spectacular dance pieces, with Remo bringing alive estimable vigor, energy and imagination on the big screen. He blends the emotional quotient with dance and music and presto! You can't take your eyes off the screen every time a dance breaks out.

ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE's biggest strength lies in the variety of dances that Remo presents to the spectators. Where the film falters is in its skeletal plotline, although writer Tushar Hiranandani comes up with several knockout sequences. But there's no denying that the screenwriting deviates into the conventional and foreseeable zone in the second hour. The curse of the second half [most films run out of steam in the post-interval portions] looms large here too, as Remo resorts to clichs to carry the story forward. Besides, the film is stretched by at least 15/20 minutes. Thankfully, the narrative gathers steam once again towards the closing portions and the dance competition in the finale is simply breathtaking.

The comparisons with F.A.L.T.U. would be foolhardy, since the two films belong to diverse genres, but Remo shows ample growth and confidence as a storyteller in ABCD ' ANY BODY CAN DANCE. A few emotional and dramatic moments are the mainstay of the enterprise, while the sequences featuring the dancing talent are attention-grabbing as well. The real test lies in making the dancers [new talent] act. The gamble of casting dancers in pivotal parts seems to have worked, since most of them take to their parts with confidence.

Sachin-Jigar create a winsome soundtrack for the film, complimenting the theme of the movie. 'Bezuban' is, without a shred of doubt, the pick of the lot and its choreography is breathtaking. Also, the track during the end credits, featuring greats such as Saroj Khan, Prabhu Dheva, Ganesh Acharya and of course, Remo, is another crackling number. The Ganeshotsav song in also stays with you. The choreography of each song and dance piece deserves distinction marks. It's truly inventive and pop out from all kinds of places. The camerawork is perfect, while the 3D may seem gimmicky at times, but accentuates the impact of several scenes, especially the dance pieces.

Prabhu Dheva returns to the acting arena after a hiatus. Regarded as the dance legend by many, Prabhu is, expectedly, incomparable in dances, but the good news is that he handles the dramatic scenes well too. It's all the more significant since he's pitted against no less than Kay Kay Menon, a tremendous talent. Kay Kay is, as always, natural to the core, essaying his part with flourish. Ganesh Acharya is a revelation. He's efficient in a significant role.

The film introduces several new talents on the big screen, but Dharmesh, Salman and Punit Pathak catch your eye the most. Lauren Gottlieb is alright.

On the whole, ABCD - ANY BODY CAN DANCE has some incredible, eye-popping dances as its soul. While the template may be conventional -- the triumph of the underdog -- the film has its share of moments that stay with you, especially the concluding portions of the film. Decent watch!

ANY BODY CAN DANCE movie review: An earnest attempt at making a hardcore dance film!

Breathtaking dance moves, great attitude – but what's with the mediocre acting and substandard script?

In Remo D'Souza's Any Body Can Dance, Kay Kay Menon (Jehangir) is an image conscious entrepreneur who owns a la-di-da dance class every rich slicker would want to enroll in. He steps into the shoes of a wannabe attention-seeker amazingly, and keeps himself and his classes in the media eye with great dexterity. From sporting spikes to wearing light-blue lens, he teams disastrous style statements with a goatee – in spite of all this, Menon hands down is the most fabulous performer in the whole film. The way he says 'we dance to impress' to his students, in a very sinister way, makes us loathe him. KK…take a bow!

Prabhudeva (Vishnu), who works for Menon, is highly disappointed with his dishonest ways to keep his students motivated. So despite delivering a shoddy performance at one of the most happening and biggest dance competitions, when the team wins, Prabhudeva – who's the teacher, wonders how they of all the people attained victory. He doubts and questions Menon's unethical strategy, but unfortunately that lands him on the lowest rung of the ladder- from a choreographer to an accounts department manager.

Obviously the Muqabla dude is not going to give up his passion to chill at the desk the whole day and help students laminate their id cards. He leaves in style, shrugs his shoulder, yanks at his jacket with great ferocity – only to return to Chennai – god knows to do what, not make idlis, we hope!

But Prabhu's friend Ganesh Acharya (who overacts a lot) comes to rescue. Epiphany moment arrives when he comes across a group of chawl inhabitants. Eureka moment – Prabhudevamutters in his mind, whispers under his breath – what if he trains these hooligans – these ill-mannered jhopadpatti guys whose nerves are made of steel and moves are almost tectonic. So preparations begin to gear them up for one of the biggest dance competition- the rich brats VS the unfortunate guys, high street dudes VS low street thugs…

That's how it all begins; Prabhu literally becomes the Prabhu for his students. He teaches them discipline, the importance of standing out in the crowd by doing something hatke, and everything good apart from Hindi – and thank God for that…!
What went wrong: The fact that the script is so clichd, and honestly we would have overlooked all that if the acting, if not decent, was less filmi. A concept that's done to death in Hollywood is churned out with a desi touch to it. Apologies to Prabhdeva fans- but his thespian skills aren't as good as his booty shaking talents.

Who impresses: Lauren Gottlieb – a firang babe with oodles of talent, great face, good acting, amazing dancer- what else do you want? KK, as we aforementioned, is a powerhouse actor, and you can't take your eyes off his villainous acts. Punit Pathak impresses as a junkie and this guy if honed, he is capable of becoming the next Bollywood stud. The last dance finale act in the film is superb. If it doesn't give you goosebumps, we will change our name (kidding, we won't). Saroj Khan shaking a leg in the end with director Remo D'Souza, Prabhudeva and Ganesh Acharya is a surprise package which we relish- even though for a couple of seconds.

Starring: Salman Yusuf Khan, Dharmesh Yelande, Kay Kay Menon, Prabhudeva, Lauren Gottlieb, Ganesh Acharya, Prince Gupta, Mayuresh Wadkar, Vrushali Chavan.

Movie Review : ABCD – A to Z of Dance

Release date: 08 Feb 2013
Director : Remo DSouza
bollywood3.com Rating : 3/5
Producer : Siddharth Roy Kapur,
Ronnie Screwvala
Music Director : Sachin,
Jigar
Starring: Kay Kay Menon,
Prabhu Dheva,
Salman Yusuf Khan

Dance based films have been a regular feature in Bollywood for quite some time now. Films like Disco Dancer, Dil To Pagal Hai and Aaja Nachle have been decent entertainers in the past. Continuing with the trend, choreographer turned director Remo Dzouza has now come up with India's first 3D film on dance. Starring a host of choreographers like Prabhu Deva, Ganesh Acharya and Salman Yousuf Khan, ABCD has finally released today. Let's see how it is.

Story:

The movie starts off with Jahangir (Kay Kay Menon) replacing his long time choreographer Vishnu (Prabhu Deva) with an international Dance teacher in his famous dance institute. For Vishnu, whose life is only about dance is heart-broken after he is kicked out of the institute. He plans to leave Mumbai, but is stopped by his friend Gopi (Ganesh Acharya).

Both of them plan to set up their own dance institute with a few local dancers, who also turn out to be personal rivals. Rest of the story is as to how Vishnu and Gopi form their own dance group, and take on the mighty Jahangir and his professional dancing team.

Positive Points:

ABCD is a total dance film as you get to see some of the best dances that Bollywood films ever had. The dance sequences are so exhilarating that you won't be able take your eyes off the screen. All the dances have been executed and shot exceptionally well. Prabhu Deva is the main stay of the movie and gives the other dancers a run for their money. He is simply superb in the Muqabila theme song and acting wise makes an decent effort.

Ganesh Acharya is a find of ABCD and is specially good with his comedy timing. Kay KayMenon is at his usual best and scores high with his flawless performance. Dharmesh, Salman Yusuf Khan and Punit Pathak burn the screens on fire with their stunning dance moves. Even though it is a dance film, emotional and dramatic scenes create an decent impact.

Negative Points:

Prabhu Deva's Hindi accent is a big turn off in the film. A dubbed voice could have worked big time for his character. The second half is very slow as many scenes have been dragged out. Some emotional scenes could have been easily chopped off. The movie loses its plot right from the start of the second half.

Some of the dance sequences have an Hollywood impact and some times get repetitive. The 3D effect in most of the songs seems unnecessary as it creates a disturbing effect to the whole flow.

Technical aspects:

All the tracks by Sachin-Jigar are a great addition to the film. Psycho re which is played at the end of the film, should have been an addition in the movie. The song features some ace dancers like Prabhu Deva, Ganesh Acharya, Saroj Khan and none other than the director Remo D'Souza himself.

Cinematography is first-rate with most of the minute dance sequences are captured exceptionally well. The 3D effect is just OK and is good only for few scenes. Dialogues are simple and the editing is neat. Screen play of ABCD, is a big let down as many scenes are out of place. Remo D Souza's direction is quite OK as he manages to get a story out of a dance based film. He deserves a special pat for bringing out some of the finest talents on one platform.

Verdict:

On the whole, ABCD is one film which has a total A to Z of dancing. A never before seen dance sequences and some out standing choreography are sure shot plus points. On the flip side, a boring and dragged out second half kills the flow of the film. Finally, ABCD will be loved immensely by dance lovers, and is a OK watch for regular movie goers.

Bollywood3 Rating : 3/5
