Chapter 12- First Crack in the Ice

"Hello?" Khushi said softly, covering her mouth to avoid making too much noise in the hospital corridor.

"Miss Gupta."

"Oh! Mr Raizada!?" She asked surprised.

"What kind of employees do You have!", He snapped and continued before She could reply, "They make so much noise while working and-"

Khushi rolled her eyes. "Mr Raizada, You seem to be forgetting that they are humans."

"Well, They need not behave as if it is a social networking site!"

"Mr Raizada, If not a place to create social relations what exactly is an office for?"

"To WORK, dammit!"

"Agreed, but They need an outlet too, Mr Raizada. I don't know about You but I don't want to be respected out of fear which seems to be Your case. I suggest you stop being a Hitler for once and look at what people want!"

"D-Did you just call me... HITLER" she heard him splutter.

"Yes. I know, the truth is bitter!" with that, She hung up the phone.

"Lord Arrogance!!" She muttered.

As She started walking back towards Payal's room, Her phone beeped.

Upon checking, She realized it was from Lavanya.

Frowning, She picked the phone to ses La's message.

'Khush, Plz get here.This guy is angry enough to bite our heads off!'

Muttering profanities under her breath, She sent a text to Aakash.

'Hey, Jiju. An SOS from office regarding your Rakshas brother. C u soon. :) '

Arnav stared at his phone in shock.

The audacity to hang up on him! She was crazy!

He tried to recollect why he had agreed work on the designs in FuzeOn in the first place...??

Oh right! He had liked the 'friendly' atmosphere. But just now,he realised that friendly was also synonymous with noise.

Grimacing, He waited for Her to arrive.

He heard the door to their cabin open and looked up to see a tired and exhausted Khushi with dark circles underneath her eyes.

She came in and sank onto the chair. "Here I am."

"Why do You look like a bear out of hibernation?"

Khushi stiffened. "None of your business Raizada!" She muttered, looking down.

Realising that He had probed a sensitive topic, He remained quiet. Arnav got up and sat across Her.

Clearing His throat, He unrolled a few papers with sketches in front of Her. She leaned towards Him, making her silver chain swing to and fro between them.

She stretched Her right arm to point at something when Arnav noticed a faint white line running from the crook of her elbow to behind it and stopping a little below her little finger.

Arnav froze and stared at the scar, a memory coming back to him..

Arnav and Khushi were preparing to fly their kites on the terrace.

The kite had been strung and left off into the air by both the friends.

Khushi's plastic white thread was held in such a way that it was winding its way from between the index finger and thumb to her little finger, from where it took a turn behind and ran upto her elbow and beyond.

She had not noticed that it was stuck in the small crystal on the dress near her sleeve.

While busy flying his kite, Arnav stepped on Khushi's string just as She took a step ahead,
causing the thread to jerk and slice her arm from the crook of her elbow to behind right up to a little below her little finger.

"Owww!!" she screamed in pain and within a moment Arnav was by her side, apologising at the speed of light.

"Khush, I am so so so so Sorry! The thread wasn't visible and I-"

Khushi smiled through her pain. "It is okay, Arnav. I know you didn't do it purpose!"

As the cut healed, the white scar had remained.

Arnav remembered telling Khushi that it doesn't matter...

Could it be...? Dare he hope that this was His Khushi...?

Khushi realised suddenly that Arnav wasn't paying attention to Her words and followed His gaze to Her scar.

"Miss Gupta, W-what happened to your- arm?"

Khushi looked up, surprised at the slight shake in his voice.

"Oh, it's nothing Mr Raizada! I was just flying kites with a friend one day..."

Arnav breathing slowed. "Miss Gupta, that's a lovely necklace you have there!" He cut her off again, and waited with bated breath for an answer.

Khushi looked down at the necklace and smiled fondly. "Thank you Mr Raizada. This was given by the same friend who was flying kites with me. He was my best friend!" she sighed.

Arnav had stood up by then. "Was?"

Moment of silence.

"He died. In a car accident. My family also got destroyed along with my friend and His family. Only Me and My Sister escaped and my friend's sister apparently. I tried to track her, but could not..."

Chain... Kites... Jalebis...Car crash... Friend's sister...

He had been told the same story. He had tried to track Payal, but failed.

"What is your sister's name?" He asked, dazed now.

"Payal." She said, as she continued sketching the designs.

Khushi's soft voice added "It wasn't till he left that I realised that I Loved him! Too late..!" She looked up at Arnav's shocked face and grinned sheepishly. "Sorry. I get carried away sometimes."

She had loved Him too!

And finally asked the question he was afraid to ask.

"What was Your friend's name?" He asked as casually as possible.

"Arnav. Arnav Mallik."
