Vishnu, we do have such pooja/havan in south too.  Some of my relatives have performed it in Rameshwaram.

@ Vishnu- There are rituals for begetting a son. It is mentioned in our Puranas. It is done both as havans and through fasting. On the day of havan the woman who aspires for a male child wears yellow colour saree. The rituals cannot be conducted on all days. There are allocated days for it. They worship Shiva and Parvati for fulfillment of this desire. In UP and Bihar side I think it is Lord Krishna in his childhood who is worshipped. This custom of havan and fasting for a male child definitely exists in North. In south however, to my knowledge pujas are done by childless couples in Rameshwaram for a child  to remove doshas in their horoscope. Basically we call it pariharam.. I am however not aware of it being done to decide the sex of the child. In south I have not heard of pujas for a male child . It is possible it is there and I am not aware of it.
