Pardon my ignorance... I'm not well versed in Indian states and languages spoken. But isn't Marathi the main language spoken in Maharashtra including Mumbai? Is Mumbai mainly Hindi and the rest of Maharashtra Marathi?

Why is Bollywood in Hindi and not Marathi?

I think Hindi is just a better known language by most all. Hindi itself is the bigger language in the country itself. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Even people out of India are more prone to understanding Hindi than Marathi. People out of India know how to speak and understand Hindi, but may not necessarily know how to speak and understand Marathi. And then we have all these Hindi soap operas/serials too. Hindi is just a universal language that is understand my most all people within India as well as out of India.

Hindi is the most widely spoken n understood language in India. Moreover Mumbai has always been a cosmopoliton rather than a marathi only city due to its trade and industrial setting. I believe the person who started Bolly was a Marathi too, think its Dadasaheb Phalke. Also, In india its common for people to know atleast 3 languages, one being hindi, english and the local language.

Btw, there is a marathi film industry too thriving and doing well in mumbai.

Long story short, the city was not part of Maharashtra post partition. It became part of the state of Maharashtra after the reorganisation of states. In fact there was no state of Maharashtra. Marathi, Gujarati and some other areas were all under one state--Bombay State.

The Hindi film industry had already been thriving when the states were reorganised linguistically in the 60s*. The committee were at a loss on what to do with Bombay, which was a cosmopolitan city and linguistically more diverse than the surrounding states. One of the suggestions was that it be a city-state. Bollywood used to be called the Bombay film industry by many rather than the Hindi film industry because it was more Hindi-Urdu than Hindi.

*Sorry, my mistake. The linguistic organisation had been done by the 60s, it was in the late 50s.

Like BI said Hindi is unofficial the national language and one of the compulsory language we study in entire country. Once Hindi industry started producing more movies than the Hollywood producing English movies, the name B(from Bombay)+Ollywood was associated with the Hindi Industry. There is a Local regional marathi Industry too.

Bollywood as in hindi films were part of Bombay/Mumbai from the time it started.
Marathi films also started at the same time, both have different place in Mumbai.
So no mix up between marathi and hindi.
The later(marathi film industry) is struggling in Mumbai where majority of hindi films play their cut throat competition...(like for eg. JTHJ and SOS) Minimal marathi films were screened in this situation...like If you want to watch any this diwali...get lost.🤢
