The other day, when I had nothing to do (which is a routine matter for me) I was just thinking, what's so special about Indian shows? (Nobody needs to tell me, I already know that I need to get a life)
Anyways, in this thought process I realized there are a few (ok, not a few, SO MANY) things common in all these shows. Almost every show has these ingredients and one just thinks why the hell is it the same story with different faces in each and every show? Here I'll mention just a few of these commonalities
Heroine - Our heroine is usually 18 yrs old, ( and nobody thinks she needs to go to school/college, instead of romancing around with that hot dude). She is a poor girl from a small town *chote shehr ki seedhi larki* and this girl enters in the life of our rude male lead and manages to woo him. Of course UNINTENTIONALLY, and his childhood friend and present girlfriend gets clean bowled by this INNOCENT girl despite being so bold *sigh* (sometimes I feel we grew up but writers have not, they are still in Cinderella's world).
Then there are the parents of this innocent girl, who are no less innocent than her. You will often hear her saying *hamaray maa bao jee ne humein sach k liye khara hona sikhaya hai (my parents have taught me to always take a stand for truth)* and honestly you will never see any of these parents ever having the courage to speak truth, rather they always have some shameful dark secrets and skeletons in their cupboard; but still they and their upbringing is best just because they are parents of our sweet gal.
This girl enjoys a strange liberty of entering wherever and whenever she wants. She can enter male lead's house at midnight, roam freely in bedrooms and corridors and strangely nobody will ask her who the hell are you? Sometime it feels like she is wearing some vanishing cloak and only hero has the power to see her. Weird thing is, she enters in his house without permission, then insults him in his own home, usually in front of his guests, gives him a long lecture on mannerism and how to behave with people, and during all this time she doesn't bother thinking about her own ill-mannered act of entering without permission.
She has the most irritating habit of interfering in the matters she has nothing to do with. She is always ready to sacrifice her own happiness for others and tries to solve their problems; its obviously not her headache whether they want her help or not.
This poor gal always miraculously gets a job in the office of the person she hates the most and then falls in love with that same person, whom she had declared *insaan kehlane k qabil nahi hai*. She gets that job even after slapping the dude, without any qualifications, and then she actually manages to get the most important project for him about which even he is not sure whether he will be able to get it or not. She does all this and still nobody is ready to believe that this girl is not at all innocent from any angle, in fact chappan churi, meesni type words are more appropriate to describe her'''why oh why *sigh*
Hero:- He is handsome, rude and most successful businessman in town. Usually he never listens to anyone, he takes his own decisions and doesn't like interference in his matters. (yet you will always see him doing exactly what one of his female relatives wishes , usually his mother or sister). He just knows how to boss around and insult people, but all this lasts only till that girl enters his life; he sees her and falls in HATE with her, sometimes without any reason. At first his behavior towards heroine is certainly not of a normal person, rather he seems like a psychopath who yells without any reason and mocks a complete stranger at the first meeting. You will see him taunting about heroine's small town background (and nobody thinks that why the hell he has such cheap mentality)Though nobody dares to disobey him, yet you will never see our heroine doing whatever he says, rather he is always seen acting upon her orders even if he hates her, he ends up doing what she wants. He can get whatever he wants but can never win when heroine challenges him, it seems like every hero is destined to be defeated by the heroine.
He has a business to run, he has office, in other words he has a life. All this he forgets once heroine enters in his life. Usually it's because of sudden illness of his mom or sister whom he loves a lot, and fans think its so cute and romantic that he is managing everything from home and is looking for a chance to be around her, though he hates her (and producer is happy because he doesn't have to pay for office set) that's what is called to kill two birds with one stone.
In short he is the most delusional character in the show who thinks he makes his own decisions but in reality cant even buy a shirt of his own choice.
Slap- is a very important thing in these shows. The harder the slap is, deeper the love gets. Love story can't be started between hero and heroine unless she slaps the poor chap for his rudeness. Without that slap, hero never tries to understand his feelings for that innocent girl. Once she slaps him, usually in the middle of a party or a meeting and in front of whole world, all the wires in his head seem to be realigned and he learns some manners (and you just remember that poor laaton ka bhoot). I just hope one of these writers finds his LOVE through such a slap.
Consummation- It seems like it's the whole purpose of the show, it's the mission impossible for married couples. Though the show starts with a confusing story and you can clearly tell even the writer doesn't know what he wants to tell and what's gonna happen next, but at a certain point even that confusing story disappears and consummation becomes the ultimate goal around which the whole story revolves. Usually you will see hero and heroine spend 3 to 6 months hating but still romancing with each other. Then there is some misunderstanding and realization of love; this phase is almost 2 months long. Then finally they get married, BUT still they don't consummate. Sometimes it's because of some pervy doc who tells the poor hero to stay as away from the heroine as possible and sometimes it's some other reason. I always fail to understand how the hell the male lead who looked so desperate to be with her before marriage, suddenly forgets such feelings once he gets married to her. He will do everything but NOT what he has a right to do. These shows give the impression like one's life loses all the colors once he consummates. It feels humans have only one purpose in life and when it is fulfilled there remains nothing to do for them thereafter. Interestingly, viewers lose interest once they consummate. The poor CVs have to do each and every stupid thing just to postpone this historic event in the show. Some over clever CVs play with the fans emotions and imaginations, by showing a steamy romantic episode which ends on a confusing note where viewers are not sure whether they did it or not. This turns out to be a great debate among poor fans who somehow are more enthusiastic about consummation than those characters in the show (and to be honest it's not less pervert mentality than that doc of hero).
