it's said that mahadev and parvati was roaming about after their marriage. suddenly, their combined ( or some say only mahadev's) energy fell into the earth. mother earth could not tolerate it, so she transferred it to agni. agni found it too much and gave it to ganga. thus a son was born who had all in him- shiv-parvati's tapasya, tolerance of earth, the energy of fire and the sacredness of ganga.
the boy floated in waters and the six krittikas who were going that way picked up the boy. he then brought out six heads so that all could breastfeed him.
later, vishnu told parvati about everything.
