SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Barfi! review

By Kunal Guha | Movie Reviews – Wed 12 Sep, 2012 10:26 PM IST
Bina kehke lunga
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana D'Cruz, Rupa Ganguly

Directed by Anurag Basu

When a movie begins by revealing the grim end, no matter how cheerful the following flashback journey may be, you're left dreading the inevitable. But 'Barfi!' manages to make you forget just that by narrating a lighthearted tragedy that wins particularly for what it doesn't do: It doesn't draw a pitiful picture of the deaf-mute lead. It doesn't attempt to do anything that would suggest that it has been made to attract foreign festival ferns on the DVD cover. It doesn't make the lead character overcome his disability to do something no man, woman or dog (without that disability) would ever think of attempting. Still foggy? Here's what it doesn't do: Click here to learn how to make a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film in a few easy steps.

United expressions of Barfi
Barfi! is a whistled version of Murphy, the name of our deaf and mute hero (Ranbir Kapoor) or how he would call himself. He sits on the fence between village idiot and neighbourhood prankster in the lovely hill station of Darjeeling. Set in the 1970s, we're ushered into his world, where every action has an equal and amusing reaction. Tweak his nose and it will remain temporarily twisted. Pull his finger and he will emit gas. He can be described as Chaplin meets Mr Bean meets Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. And with words out of the way, Barfi's actions score in the loudness competition hands down. So when Shruti (Ileana D'Cruz), a Bong babe on a holiday, comes into his line of vision, he instantly applies all his non-verbal abilities to voice his heart. After initially brushing aside her feelings, she gives in. But wait, she is engaged to a certain someone else and is due to get married in a month. Naturally, Barfi's muted explosion of sorrow follows. But just like the song, 'he gets knocked down and then he gets up again' to find comfort in childhood friend Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra). Jhilmil is an autistic girl who has deceptive parents and a whole lot of inheritance from a recently deceased grandpa. The love story drifts into a suspense thriller when Jhilmil goes missing, while her parents claim that she has been kidnapped. Inspector Dutta (Saurabh Shukla) wants to get to the bottom of the case as he can't make much from the two different ransom notes that are discovered. Will Jhilmil ever be found? Will Barfi end up with a laddoo for his courtship efforts or be rewarded with a peda? Will Ileana D'Cruz have to book her return ticket to Telegu films? These questions are best left unanswered for they may give away more than you want to read here.
Run Barfi run!
The film allows the viewer to experience a range of emotions and even if it doesn't invite much empathy, it keeps you interested, attentive and anxious to learn what will unfold next. While marriages and suspense thrillers only work till someone gets caught, here the story sails through even after you've figured it all out, without making you check your cellphone or visit the washroom.

If Ranbir Kapoor would've debuted with 'Barfi!' instead of the disastrous 'Saawariya', he would've become Bollywood's sweetheart right away. Putting his back into the character, Ranbir manages to convey a diversity of moods wordlessly and doesn't resort to hamming which was very possible here, considering he was left to play dumb charades through the film. Even Priyanka Chopra pulls off her character with just the right amount of abnormality, easily and effectively. Ileana D'cruz's role doesn't offer much scope to present her acting ability and just looking dazed with a distant expression was enough. She manages that well. Pritam drums up a soundtrack that sets the mood and Mohit Chauhan's 'Ala Barfi' and the opening credits track 'Picture Shuru' offer a pleasurable listen. Here's a song that didn't make it out of the recording studio:
The most mentionable aspect about this film is the deliciously stunning cinematography. Almost every frame is a picture postcard. Even the camera angles could force the makers of 'Amelie' to return to the drawing board. Anurag Basu has surely come a long way from 'Kites' and a short way from 'Life in a… Metro'. He needs to be applauded for stitching together this simple yet soulful story, without magnifying the disabilities of the lead characters.

Barfi! is not a story that will make it into the 'Chicken Soup for the deaf and mute' or the 'Spinach salad for the autistic'. But when you watch the film, you will realize that we should only be glad about that. In short, Barfi says it best when he says nothing at all.

I'll try but I sincerely doubt it. It took me ages to convince her to watch Rockstar with me. She didnt even watch Agneepath with me, it was just me and my dad.

Barfi will leave you speechless!

Director: Anurag Basu

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana DCruz

Rating: ****

The title lead of the movie is deaf and mute but not for a moment in the movie do you bemoan that Barfi can't speak. Ranbir Kapoor skillfully makes up for the deficiency with his animated expressions and endless energy. And while director Anurag Basu subtracts some significant senses from his protagonist, he adds much more than he takes away. Barfi is 'visually' stunning, 'smells' of freshness in every frame, 'touches' your heart every second and is so 'tastefully' treated that its excellence 'speaks' for itself.

Barfi has the potential to make the stonehearted go soggy-eyed with its sheer sensitivity and the capability to make even cynics open up to its warmth. Without a single line to mouth, Ranbir Kapoor expresses much more than any average actor could even dream of. The actor oozes of such continual charm that you can't help but fall in love with him.

Such is the uniqueness of the film that it starts with the protagonist on deathbed, goes in flashback mode and despite the imminent tragic tone, still ends on a happy note. The protagonist derives its name from the popular radio brand of 70s - Murphy, but ironically can't speak or hear.

Fondly called Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor), the film traces his journey as he grows up in the quaint hill-station of Darjeeling, falls in love with a tourist Shruti (Ileana DCruz), is left heartbroken and then forms another tender bond with his childhood friend, an autistic girl Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra).

To start with, Barfi is not a film about the trials and tribulations of a deaf and mute human in this supposed normal world. The idea is never to seek sympathy towards the protagonist. Rather Barfi comes across as a perfectly normal guy and exudes more life than any all-right mortal. In fact his natural joie de vivre attitude, notwithstanding the deficit, imparts distinctiveness to his blithe biopic.

If you analyze the film technically, it doesn't rely on a very inventive storyline. However it's Anurag Basu's delicate handling of the narrative that takes the film to an altogether different level. The love story between Barfi and Shruti is confined within the age old rich-girl-poor-boy syndrome. But not for a moment does the track seem cliched.

Rather then resorting to melodrama, Basu shows restrain esp. in the scene where Shruti's mother (resourcefully played by Roopa Ganguly) puts across the dilemma to her daughter with her similar love story in the past.

The subsequent bonding between Barfi and the autistic Jhilmil faintly reminds of Kamal Haasan-Sridevi's masterpiece Sadma. What adds individuality to this episode is the fact that while Barfi is sane, he can't express wholly and while Jhilmil can express she is not completely stable.

The simple story is also largely augmented by Basu's non-linear storytelling pattern. Not only does the narrative keep changing tracks between three different time periods, it also keeps oscillating through smaller subplots in each timeline. The chapters are beautifully interwoven with each other and such layered story-structure brings in a connect-the-dots gratifying feel with it. Add to it, such storytelling circumvents any predictability from seeping into the plot and invites the constant contemplation of what would happen next.

Review: Barfi! leaves you speechless and satisfied

A still from the film Barfi!

Film: Barfi! (U)
Director: Anurag Basu
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor. Ileana D'Cruz, Priyanka Chopra, Gauhar Khan
Rating: ****1/2

After you've waited long enough to get into a theatre to watch what seems like a beautiful film, an acutely cute 'Picture Shuru' song sets the tone for a joyride you're about to experience. Steering clear of the bland service announcements, 'Picture Shuru' is a breath of fresh air, just like the protagonist Barfi and his silent, yet happy world.

The hearing and speech-impaired Barfi, is a darling, his disability never overshadowing the way he cares, loves and lives in general. Pinched bottoms, comical chases, revolving doors, emotional outbursts, fairly dangerous tests of friendship, overall mirth are all part of his everyday life, vibrant personality. And Ranbir brings him alive with touches that you can't think who else could give to such an intense character.

From start to finish, director Anurag Basu never gives up on Barfi's quirkiness, while in another home autistic Jhilmil's (Priyanka Chopra) ashamed parents have packed her off to a children's home. Told in flashbacks of many peripheral characters, Basu's story touches chords from every angle, risks getting convoluted somewhere in between then comes back on track, Barfi and Jhilmil in tow.

Basu's characters don't demand sympathy, they seek love. Just as a cold Darjeeling of 1972 forms a pretty canvas, Basu airdrops unusual lovers, purges them apart, then brings them back together for rendezvous you wish never ends.

The icy hearts of Darjeeling's residents are a stark contrast to the warm and fuzzy feeling Barfi leaves you with.

The hero here has no dialogue, yet says so much with the serene smile, overt gestures and sign language, reminiscent of the tramp-like aura of Raj Kapoor. Chopra's Jhilmil is an autistic 'reject', having no dialogue again, yet moving one to tears every time she runs behind old and worn out friend Barfi. Ileana D'Cruz is a find. Being the only central character to have dialogue (very minimal again), her eyes convey much more than the spoken word. Saurabh Shukla, Ashish Vidyatharti, Akash Khurana are all effective in their roles. Rupa Ganguly's character comes across as unintentionally funny, but it's too insignificant to dwell upon.

Add to all this, a heavy dose of cellos and violins churning out a haunting background score and songs like Ala Barfi, Main Kya Karoon, Aashiyan keeping you busy long after the film is over. Composer Pritam has produced a winner of a sountrack.

The storytelling leaves you positive, rekindling a lost belief in old-style, unconditional loving. For settings, Basu weaves the dry beauty of Darjeeling tempered with lush tea plantations with the crowded, blingy yet warm and damp Kolkata. Barfi! is a visual and emotional cycle ride, meant to be enjoyed at leisure with loved ones.

For someone who cries easily at the movies, Barfi! is a thorough tearjerker. Dissecting a film that left you speechless is difficult. Just let go, indulge in the magic of Barfi!

~TOI 4.5 stars

Story: An almost silent relationship between a deaf-mute and an autistic that speaks volumes about unconditional love.

Movie Review: He was born to a song playing on a Murphy radio, but this 'Murphy' baby (Ranbir) aka Barfi has a different law. Everything that has to go wrong will go wrong, but not if you brave it with a broad smiley. So 'mute' the high decibel chaos and deafening melodrama around and tune into Barfi ki duniya; which is simple, sweet and SILENT! Yet, extreme emotions of love, joy and pain resound - at different 'frequencies'.

In the breathtakingly beautiful Darjeeling of the 70s, Barfi 'bumps into' Shruti (Ileana) and instantly falls in love with her. With wonder-eyes and in part-Chaplin-part-Raj-Kapoor style, he woos her with more 'actions' than words and leaves her speechless. He even wins over her heart, but she walks away with a Bengali babu, only because he 'apparently' has some abilities (of sound and speech, minus emotion) that Barfi isn't blessed with.

But don't worry, this Charlie is no bechara, he gives her a wordless, guttural, 'earful', wears his signature smiley and moves on. Soon he reunites with childhood friend Jhilmil (Priyanka) - autistic and abandoned by her wealthy family to live in a 'special' home.

In between haath-rickshaw rides, watching fireflies and gulping putchkas - an endearing and special bond grows between Barfi and Jhilmil. Life takes a turn (sharper than the tram-lines of Kolkata), and the destinies of Barfi, Jhilmil and Shruti mysteriously converge.

Ranbir, in the most challenging performance of his career leaves us 'dumbstruck'. Without use of conventional crutches of cool-catchphrases,dhamaakedar-dialogbaazi, bare-bodies, and other 'items'; he stuns you in every single frame. Even too much of Barfi isn't enough, damn the diet!

For Priyanka, there's only one word - Bravo! In a role where she needs to under-emote, she does so brilliantly. Without stylish chiffons, she wears awkward frocks, buckle-shoes and buck teeth, discarding the diva image like an old hand-me-down for lesser actresses; delivering an incredible performance.

Ileana looks a beautiful Bong bahu, and proves her talent with conviction and confidence in her Bollywood debut.

For a story riddled with disabilities, Barfi is more than ably handled by Anurag Basu. He remarkably immerses you in his world of sounds and verbose silences, recreating Chaplin's antics, stripping two superstars down to basics and sensitively spinning a magical world of unconditional love. The narrative is too non-linear at times, and the pace slows in the second half. That apart, it's truly path-breaking for Bollywood.

Pritam's background score fills the air, lending support to silences, and the lyrics beautifully describe the mute-musings of the characters. The biggest human disability is we can't find happiness. So go indulge in Barfi! It'll leave you 'happy high'!

My short review:

4.5/5
A most delightful start. A tongue in cheek song tickles you as you settle down in the seats. And what follows is a beautiful string of delightful little moments- both sad and happy- just as they are in real life. Unconditional love- that's the central theme on which the story is based.

Ranbir does great yet again- and tho its the funny moments that will connect more with the audiences, you should see the scenes where he has to emote. it isnt easy to do it without saying a word but this guy uses his eyes to convey those emotions like a very seasoned actor.

Priyanka throughout walks on the thin line between underplaying and overplaying what is a very difficult role. Thankfully she stays on the right side of the line mostly. Kudos to her for having taken this deglam and tough role in an era where you can get by easily by looking beautiful, dancing to a couple of songs and mouthing a few dialogues.

Ileana makes a confident debut- looks beautiful, but her expressions get a wee bit monotonous towards the end.

The music is wonderful. Saawli si raat is my favorite song on screen. My only grudge- they didnt even use fully my most favorite song Phir le Aaya... Khair, jaane do!

The only couple of negatives for me were a slow pace in certain parts and sometimes the non linear narrative interrupts the flow of the movie.

Whether this connect with the masses and makes it to that magical 100 cr mark, cant say but thank you Anurag Basu and team for the meethi si Barfi! :)
