nice thread and shows the serious issue of domestic violence and having empathy for mental illness. Though it is being treated well in this show, few have the intellectual ability to go beyond the show to relate with it- end of the day, people want "entertainment". I think, rather than making it a daily show, it should be restricted to the weekends or something.

Ah, I was not aware that it was promoted like this. However, I actually like that Viraj's mental illness is an important element of the show. In real life domestic violence cases can be equally confusing and conflicting. There are all sorts of scenarios. A loving father who might dote on his daughters but be violent to his wife. A man who might be tender and supportive but turn aggressive when under the influence of alcohol.

That's what is so frustrating and also illuminating - that we would need to detangle ourselves from all the conflicting emotional pulls that we experience and focus on what is the most important and immediate issue - that a woman (or indeed a man married to a violent woman) has to be saved from harm. That there should be no tolerance of physical abuse, no matter what the underlying matter might be.

Yes, I liked the fact that they show Jahnvi leaving Viraj - finally finding the courage to be able to step out of that intolerable existence. Many times, I see shows were women stay on in miserable marriages hoping for change and I'm glad this was not the case here.

Yes, some amount of hyperbole and theatricality is inevitable. I guess the idea is that the exaggerations in Viraj's character are necessary to produce the necessary sympathetic response to Jahnvi when she left him.

We had a lovely discussion in the Iss Pyar Ko forum about Ravan and the complexities of his character and how fascinating he is. Most of us agreed that he is actually a very nuanced character with many redeeming qualities and definitely not the epitome of evil.

See now this picture is a perfect illustration of what is so interesting about Viraj. He's mentally ill and yet there is this larger than life magnetism about him. The rational side of mine would always know that staying with a man like this is living hell and ultimately life threatening and yet I'll be tormented by the possibility of what if he gets better and things improve and so on.

At the end of the day, all these dilemmas can be cut through with one clear insight - no man who physically assaults you is ever, ever worth it. No matter what.
