Review: 3 is sincere and refreshing

March 30, 2012 17:38 IST
A scene from 3With Tamil film 3, Aishwarya R Dhanush presents a take on romance that is appealing in its freshness, writes Pavithra Srinivasan.

There's a defining moment in RK Productions' and Wunderbar Film's movie, 3, when Rohini meets her daughter after an extended absence; her eyes rove over her face, noting every single thing that's changed about her. A scene that's extremely feminine in its perspective and one that's very refreshing as well.

Debutante Aishwarya R Dhanush's directorial debut has been in the news for more than one reason: she's superstar Rajnikanth's [ Images ] daughter, the male lead is her husband National Award winner Dhanush, paired with Shruti Haasan [ Images ], and then, of course, there's the sensational "Why this Kolaveri di?" which took virtually the whole world by storm.

So, does the film satisfy the sky-high anticipation it's raised? It does, in some respects, and could have done better in others.

The romance track, which unfolds as a series of flashbacks takes you by surprise and leads to many genuinely amusing moments.

Ram (Dhanush) and Janani (Shruti Haasan) first set eyes on each other as twelfth standard students from different schools, and though you've seen the scenario a dozen times in various movies, it still manages to be appealing, full of the spark of young love, the looks, touches and yes, even kisses, adding to the allure.

Ram and Janani move through the first tentative touches of puppy love, and then to something more serious, even as Ram's parents (Prabhu and Banupriya) and Janani's parents try to accommodate this new turn of events. There are Ram's friends as well (Siva Karthikeyan and Sunder Ramu), who play their own part. Janani's young sister, however, is wholeheartedly in support of her sister's love.

Events seem to move towards a logical conclusion -- but then, not everything is as it seems.

Up to this point, it's a great ride. The screenplay moves at a spanking pace; the characters reel you into their story and you're invested enough in their life to desperately want to know what happens next.

The second half does have its suspense-filled moments and gentle twists in the tale, but a good deal of melodrama and too many tears hinder the momentum a little. Some editing of the sentimental whiplash by Kola Bhaskar might have added more depth to the proceedings.

As for the lead pair, much has been written about them, but what works best in the movie is the chemistry between Dhanush and Shruti Haasan, especially in the first half. As school students they put up a very believable act (and their slim builds help), while later, the romance is sweet even if it does get a little too syrupy at times.

Shruthi's accent is still a little too western, considering she's shown as someone who's grown up in Chennai, but acting-wise, both have delivered credible performances. Dhanush, especially, in the climax, walks away with the honours.

Of the rest, the little girl who plays Shruthi's sister is very appealing, while Rohini is mature and dignified, fitting in well.

Sunder Ramu does well, too.

Velraj's cinematography is fresh and unobtrusive, letting you sink into the story, while Anirudh's background score seems to have touches of Braveheart. It's sincere enough and the songs are pleasant, but the background score gets a little too loud at times. And the Kolaveri song, of course, raises the roof.

There are certain moments in 3 that defy logic at times, and sentiment rules the roost, but Aishwarya Dhanush has chosen to present a take on romance that is appealing in its freshness. The lead actors help as well. Her little thriller-twist aside, 3 is a movie that is an ode to romance, above all else.

Most good films will engage you with their characters and their drama. Aishwarya Dhanush has an admirable debut as director and her much hyped Moonru (3) has an outstanding first half, loses some of its steam in the second half, but ends up as an honourable film which is quite poignant.

3 is a moving drama that will undoubtedly leave you with a lump in your throat. Intuitively written by Aishwarya herself, it is emotional and sure to leave you teary-eyed. Much of the credit for that must go to the protagonist played by Dhanush who delivers a measured performance in a myriad role.

The film keeps you engaged on the strength of its plot, as it does for the interesting characters who inhabit it. The first half is poetic and takes you on a journey through the love story of Ram (Dhanush) and Janani (Shruthi) who are 12th standard students. The romance has a slow build-up and an earthy charm.

The scenes between Ram and the delicate Janani, played by a Shruthi are a scream. Silences convey so much more than irreverent banter, and nowhere is this more evident than in the interactions between the lovely pair whose romance is told through their eyes and longing expressions.

For Dhanush, 3 is yet another milestone in acting. Investing in him a boyish charm, he exploits the role with full-blown impact. He effortlessly pulls off the restless, charming Ram and brings depth to his character. Aishwarya has brought the best out of Shruti in her school portions but she tends to overact, especially in the crying scenes towards the end.

Siva Karthikeyan as Kumaran and Sundar as Senthil, Ram's friends never miss a beat. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised by the supporting cast and watch how cleverly Aishwarya uses them. It's a joy to watch veterans like Prabhu, Bhanupriya and Rohini.

An impressive achievement both in writing and direction, the film is full of fine nuances and sharp observations that stay with you. Comedy and romance are beautifully weaved into the story in a realistic manner.

Songs by Anirudh are a major plus for the film and they go with the flow of the story. The most anticipated Kolaveri number does not overshadow the narration and is picturised in a simple manner by Aishwarya, without any gimmicks. The Kannazhaga and Podi Po stays with you even after the film is over.

Velraj's camera is good while Kola Bhaskar could have made the film crisp in the climax. On the whole, 3 has its heart in the right place, though the second half seem scattered. Overlook these faults, and make it a point to watch 3.

Verdict: Poignant

My take on the movie...( my first time review as I rarely go to watch movies)

I am damn sure my thambi will be on my side! 🤣

Postivies :

Prabhu and Shiva though a very small character has done their part well!
Shruti was better in acting than 7 am arivu..
Background score was nice...

Story was literally nothing! Dhanush and Shruti had more of emotional outpouring than acting. First part was nice but not up to the mark. The three stages of life... I could see only 2 stages ( ok i dont want to reveal that so soon) .2nd part was really a javvu!! izhuvayi... . Could have taken better. People were yawning at one point.

I am surprised and I have not heard of such a marriage can ever happen.. I may seem to be talking like a pattikadu. but couldnt digest that fact! And parents accepting such a marriage no words. No value for tradition pola..

Kolaveri di song picturization - I didnt expect it to be worse. I had great expectation on its sequences. But sigh...😒 Such an internationally acclaimed song could have been better.

Over emotions be it love or crying.😔 Story could have added some sort of comedy or liveliness in the second half. Dry it was.. Shiva just vanished from the movie. The other friend did well.

I liked the small part played by Badava gopi & Shiva.

Music was ok. Kannazhaga song was good. the rest I couldnt even memorize.

On the whole it was a disappointment for me. A mix of selvaraghavan movie with some stages as in Alaypayuthe. I could only say dont go with any hopes.

Hope none takes this otherwise ,its just my opinion.
