Movie Reviews : Nanban
Expectations were high for the film for the fact that Shankar and Vijay have come together for the first time for a movie. And, for Shankar this is his next after the mammoth production and blockbuster hit superstar's 'Endhiran'! For Vijay, this is his next to the successful 'Velayudham'!
'Nanban' tells the story of three Engineering students who come from different backgrounds with different goal in their lives. Pari (Vijay), Senthil (Jiiva) and Venkatramakrishnan are the three friends who are very close friends in the class. Pari wants to see studies that should be useful to our lives and doesn't believe in memorizing subjects like what Srivatsan (Satyan), who is the darling of professor Santhanam (Sathyaraj). The three boys incur the wrath of the professor, but as the story goes on the professor slowly realizes the real personalities of the three friends. Pari loves professor's daughter Riya (Ileana), a medical college student. After their course completion what the boys become in their lives is told later that should be watched on the silver screen.
We see a different Vijay, doing the role Pari. What a performance! It's really a treat to all Vijay fans. The performance of Jiiva and Srikanth are also extraordinary. The chemistry between these three stars could be seen in every scene they are together.
Another big performance is from veteran actor Satyaraj. He, as Professor Virumandi Santhanam, has lived the role. And, for Satyan, this is the best film that he can boast in his career.
Ileana as the love interest of Vijay is cute and attractive. Her acting and dance movements in the film will definitely bring big offers and she would do a big round in Kollywood! S J Suryah and Anuya Bhagawat have done cameo appearances.
Shankar does not have any introduction to the hard work he puts in his films. He has proved it in many of his films. And, 'Nanban' is another milestone movie in his list of big films but differently, for 'Nanban' being totally an emotional drama with visuals that is a whole riot of colours! Every frame of the film speaks Shankar's hard work and creative brain. Hats off, Shankar!
'Nanban' is a Tamil remake of 2009 Bollywood blockbuster '3 Idiots'. The title roles in Hindi were played by Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. Kareena Kapoor's role is played by Ileana in 'Nanban'. Sathyaraj excels the professor role that Boman Irani had in '3 Idiots'.
Original story was adapted from Chetan Bhagat's novel 'Five Point Someone'. The screenplay for 'Nanban' is written by Shankar and Madhan Karky.
Music is by Harris Jayaraj. The Shankar - Harris Jayaraj duo had created a magic earlier with their film 'Anniyan'. The same magic has been created with 'Nanban' too. The songs are already a rage with youngsters and music lovers and topping the charts. The background score too adds strength to the script.
Manoj Paramahamsa has done the camera work, a big plus to 'Nanban'. The lens man has taken his camerawork to next level. Editing by Anthony is also worth mentioning.
'Nanban' is produced by Gemini Film Circuit in a whopping budget of Rs.60 Crore. The film is also dubbed in Telugu with a title '3 Rascals'.
'Nanban' is definitely a big treat for both Shankar and Vijay fans, and a wholesome entertainment for everyone who loves good cinema!
Verdict : 'Nanban' is a film that is sure a watchable. A must watch!

Nanban Movie Review
There is no point in drawing comparisons between the original version '3 Idiots' and the official remake ' Nanban '. The reason is that certain themes become universal and it savors to the tastes of universal audiences. And when it comes to 'Love', 'Friendship' and any social issue, it instantly gets into everyone's senses.
Chetan Bhagat's 'Five Point Someone' was conceptualized with such a theme that didn't just speak about someone's identity, a special person, but about the strong theme about the pressures of youngsters through their academic career. Life becomes a race for many of us that lead to wrong perception of 'success', which ultimately results in the depression of mind.
' Nanban ' is a mere remake of '3 Idiots' and Shankar might have not even glimpsed through the pages of the novel as it was revealed through some sources prior to release.
The Movie opens with friends ' Venkata Ramakrishnan (Srikanth) and Sevalkodi Senthil (Jiiva) going in search of their friend Panchavan Parivendan aka Paari (Vijay). They journey across the exotic locales of Ooty to find their lost one. What follows next is the trip within on how the buddy changed their lives: endowing them with a desire to hook upon their passion and not to run blindly behind success.
For those who have already seen '3 Idiots', it will take few moments to settle down and nearly post-intermission; it gets a grip as lots of drama happens there. And exclusively for Vijay fans, it's quite entertaining. After 'Jeans', Shankar has tried a mild melodrama without any action sequences.
The absence of Sujatha is felt very much as his dialogues were some of his best assets in Shankar's movies and this time it's quite missing as the writers have just translated the lines from original version except few witty-liners.
What irk to a little extent is the caricatured characterizations replicated from the original one. Can't Shankar try out something new at least with this aspect? Vijay imitating Aamir Khan's mannerisms, Ileana trying to be Kareena Kapoor and what's more annoying is Sathyaraj, whose imitation of Boman Hirani, especially his English slang is ridiculous. Sathyan is not an exception as well. But it's Jiiva and Srikanth, who exhibit their own style of performance and win laurels. Ananya does justice to her role.
However as the more drama occurs during second half, the intensity of characters deepens and it works hard to do justice to the script.
Technically, the Movie has a beautiful picturing by Manoj Paramahamsa and grading of colors especially for the songs is captivating. Harris Jayaraj fails to work best in his background score while songs may not be so much enjoyed by Ilayathalapathy fans, but works to the best with Shankar's grandiloquent factors.
The best scenes of the Movie '
1. The suspense during intermission
2. Srikanth convincing his father, Jiiva at interview
3. Vijay and his friends curing Jiiva
4. Birth of Anuya's baby
5. A surprising twist in climax
On the whole, Nanban is a good entertainer with lots of commercial ingredients that comes with a strong message as a package ' Don't run behind success, Follow your heart, Discover your passion and develop your skills into it, Success will come behind you.
Verdict: Don't miss it

Nanban Movie Review
Don't miss this film.
Verdict: Good

In our Nanban preview analysis, we said there are three mandatory things that should happen for Nanban to become a Blockbuster...Did Nanban meet all these 3 criteria? Read on...
With sky high expectations to replicate '3 Idiots' success without deviating too much from the original while keeping the content fresh is a tight-rope walk for any director. Many directors may have failed by trying too hard or by playing too safe. Congratulations to Shankar, Vijay and rest of the team for successfully delivering big time on the promise. Nanban works just like the original and here a few key reasons why.
Vijay
Finally, Nanban will be a genuine and undisputed comeback movie for Vijay. First and foremost reason for watching Nanban is Vijay. There were so many questions as to whether Vijay can justify the role of a brilliant maverick genius. Vijay will prove every one of his skeptics wrong through his mature performance in this movie. Vijay is completely natural and keeps the audience engaged throughout even when you know what is going to unfold on the screen. Vijay shows his tremendous acting potential after a long time without having to be loud. For example, one of the main highlights of the second half is the Jiiva's hospital sequence where Vijay single-handedly owns the screen and shows what he is capable of -- Truly a fantastic performance! Here is the actor people have been searching for so many year and thanks to Shankar for unearthing such a natural performer through Nanban. *spoiler alert* Probably, this is the first movie in his career where Vijay has no fight and this may also be the first movie where he has a real lip-to-lip kiss with Ileana shown in a very family friendly manner *
Shankar
Shankar knows when he needs to play like Tendulkar and when he needs to be like Dravid. In Nanban, he does a Dravid by staying loyal to the original script without any insecurity. It is admirable to note that he doesn't feel the need to deviate from the original screenplay. Yet, at the same time he knows how to keep you engaged somehow. In the first half, the comparisons with the original was unavoidable in a few places. But, Shankar takes it to top gear during the second half and maintains till the end. This movie will make people realize how difficult it is to remake a classic.
Music
Harris Jayaraj's music and background score is another important reason for the movie feeling fresh. His background score is perfectly in sync and plays a huge role in bringing out the right emotions. This is one of the most mature background work done by Harris in recent times.
Cast and Crew
Nanban is a clear example of team-work. With so many characters, it is difficult to say who did better than the others. Jiiva scores in every scene with his subtle performance and has great voice modulation. He plays an important role in making the chemistry between the friends work. Sathiyaraj brings his own style to enact the Virus role and doesn't remind you of Boman Irani. Big surprise is Sathiyan who is very believable in the Silencer role -- he comes across as the nerdy as well as able to pull off the key comedy scenes. It is an extremely smart casting decision by Shankar to have Sathiyan play this role. Srikanth's narration and unfolding of story is effective. Srikanth is impressive in an important scene where he convinces his dad. Srikanth looks fresh and young. Ileana is cute in her limited role and brings the house down when she says "Avanaa nee". Her belly dance will be remembered. Even small characters like Anuya and SJ Suriya deliver exactly what is expected.
Madhan Karky deserves kudos for such great dialogues and lyrics. Dialogues are intelligent, simple and at the same time very impactful. Also, 'En frienda pola yaaru machan' during the beginning title card with rich picturization showing the friends reminiscing the past while driving through winding Ooty roads will pull the audience right in to the movie.
Cinematography, editing, art direction and other technical departments have all worked for the script. The best thing about Nanban is that nobody tries to outshine others -- be it acting or technical departments.
Downsides
So, are there any downsides? definitely a few... Running length of 3 hours 7 minutes 52 seconds feels a bit stretched even though Shankar probably contributed only 12 minutes to it with a few set-up scenes for the additional 'Ileana' song. Purists may call it a spead-breaker. But, it is debatable since this may work out for certain section of audience who will enjoy Vijay's fast moves in the song. Another possible let-down is all the song picturizations including 'Asku Laska' feels low-budget compared to the usual Shankar standards.
Bottomline
People who watch this movie without knowing anything about the original will walk out of the theatre elated, rejuvenated and super-thrilled. There are a plenty of scenes that will be emotionally moving for the first time viewers. Even the viewers who have watched the original will find the movie worth watching.
Vijay stands tall even after giving so much space to so many memorable casts and characters in the movie. Shankar is 100% correct when he said even people who doesn't like Vijay will like him after this movie.
Verdict : Nanban is a must watch for all !

The official remake of the blockbuster Three Idiots is here! We wondered, when lesser blockbusters were being remade, why this cracker of a story was not finding its way down south. But, all good things take some time in the making and it is somehow fitting that a tale loved by most part of the nation, first in the form of Chetan Bhagath's 'Five Point Someone' and then in the form of Rajkumar Hiran's Three Idiots, is brought down south by Shankar, the man with the Midas touch.
Well, there are very few people who might not yet know the basic premise of the movie; thanks mostly to the overwhelming success of the book and the original movie. Its about three friends, the four years they spend in college with one of them trying to be a free bird in a system that clips wings, their run ins with a draconian educationist, a cute romance angle and a secret. Well, that's a lot on the plate of a single movie, you might think. But, the script is one masterpiece, originally by Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinodh Chopra, as it brings together all these elements into a fun filled, hilarious, touching, meaningful and immensely entertaining three hours. You get everything that you would want to from a college movie; the camaraderie that you cherish forever, the pressure of academics, marks, the fun and even the geeks and nerds. Nanban is not a full length comedy, but there are numerous instances which will make your belly ache with laughter (the 'karpazhippu' scene is an absolute scream); neither is Nanban a love story, but it does have a very likeable romance; Nanban is also not a social statement, but it does point out some gaping holes in the educational system. Well then, what is Nanban? Well, it is a complete package for those who love good, clean, sensible entertainment (that means all of us!).
