Lohri is a very popular Punjabi festival or a seasonal festival which marks the agricultural winter. It is associated with the harvest of crops namely rabi crops. It is celebrated throughout many countries mainly Punjab,Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu.
It is believed that the festival emerged as a celebration of the eve of the winter solstice. However, the Punjabis celebrate it on the last day of the month during which winter solstice takes place called Paush. One more belief is that Lohri is celebrated when a new born baby is born and also where a boy has recently got married. Nowadays, many have started celebrating it upon the birth of a girl as well.
Lohri night is considered to be the longest night of the year and on the day, day light is meant to increase. Lohri day is also linked to the arrival of the festival of Makar Sankranti.
During the day, children go from door to door and are given sweets and savories, or sometimes money.
The collections are known as Lohri and it is then distributed at night during the festival.
The bonfire ceremony is arranged and lit at sunset. People toss sesame seeds, gur, sugar-candy and rewaries [jaggery] in the bonfire, sit around it, sing and dance till the fire dies out. Some people perform a prayer while going around the bonfire.
