This is a very complicated issue and there are so many roundabout ways to the cause and the effect of the whole situation.
To those who think this woman should have stood up for herself, frankly she didn't have a choice. because of the stigma surrounding rape victims there, she had to marry her attacker, offcourse she tried to make the best of the situation by making his sister marry her brother. However it shows again, women sometimes act as their own enemies.
Even in developed countries, you can find subtle discrimination in the mind of men and women alike. thats why a woman engineer/ scientist/ doctor is still looked with additional respect, like wow you are a woman and u did this. Why not treat is as a normal career choice of the woman.
There are lots of deep rooted abstract custom in every culture and religion, which none of the religious texts ever say but which the opportunist use to create a discrimination between men and women.
Even in families which are open minded and liberal, there are situations where the whole family is proud of the daughter's achivement but does not really care much for the daughter in law.
Anyways there is a age old qoute by manu which states, Yatra naryanta pujyate, ramante tatra devata
Wherever women are honored, there the gods are pleased
may be it should be repeated by us, all over the world over and over again. In a society where women are oppressed more and denied their right,it regresses backwards itself. It is high time that all those misguided people, men and women both learn and understand that. f people are smart enough to understand how they can improve their condition, may be they should try to stop their discrimination. Thats why some of the most backward countries in the world are the places where discrimination and oppresion against women are maximum.
One of the greatest philosophers of 20th century, swami vivekananda worked really hard to solve the terrible conditions of women in India. Here is a link for a few of his qoutes.
He said:
There is no chance for the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved.
