Rituals of north Indian Marriages

Off late I hv been witnessing few posts where different questions hv been asked regarding different rituals of North Indian marriages. Obviously to understand Arhi marriage better. I can understand few of u can't understand n therefore I thought of making u all aware of those. As a North Indian married woman (native place ' Varanasi) I am fully aware of these rituals. Letz start frm d beginning -----

1. Meeting of boy n girl wid all d family members. It's not a ritual but normally in North India dey initiate d process like dat.

2. Then if evrythg goes well marriage decision is taken n exchange of LAGNA PATRIKA written in Sanskrit bu pundits has been done which means official announcement of marriage.

3. Den GODBHARAI Or ROKA ' meaning all d women from groom's family gathers in bride's home n gvs her blessing n gifts. It means this is gonna b daughter in law of my family.

4. Den all members of bride's family goes to do d same as BARAKSHA of groom. This means d boy will now b my son in law.

5. Den again after few days dey again gather to groom's house for TILAK. Dey gv gifts to all d family members n relatives n brother of bride actually puts TILAK on groom's forehead.

6. After dat engagement ceremony is done. We all know wat it is.

7. The process continues wid many rituals. Major r HALDI, MEHNDI n SANGEET. We all have seen alot in TV serials n movies so I don't think there is a need of explanation. Also there r several small rituals r performed till d date of marriage.

8. MARRIAGE ' now in North India SAAT PHERE (in YELLOW SARI) is d major thg which certifies d bride n groom as couple. Only putting SINDOOR or tying MANGALSUTRA is not enuf n unless SAAT PHERE is not complete d marriage is not done.

9. In d morning Groom receives gifts by all d family members of bride's side.

10. VIDAAI ' all rona dhona stuff

11. WELCOME in groom's family of bride at d door. U all hv seen it.

12. Den among all different small rituals n different games most significant is MUHDEKHAI where all elders finally see d bride n gv gifts n blessing to her.

13. Den Reception party

14. FINALLY SUHAAGRAAT ' I wanna xplain dis. No plz don't stop me I wanna xplain dis. Wat???? Dis is family forum. But Suhaagraat is d first step to build a family. Plz. Plz. Plz. I'm a Sri Lankan and though I have seen all these in hindi films have not understood the order of events and initially thought that Rokha & Sagaai were same !!!!!

Nice post but the rituals are bit different in my family since I am from the north as well but I guess every fam does it differently like according to their can traditions and all.

rashmi tanx a lot ..i am a south indian nd tamilian so was not aware of this long stuff ... our marraiges are not for long its a 2 day affair.. btw wher is the kanyadaan part .. not there in ours bride sits on the fathers lap nd after mangalsutra tying it is very emotional for father to part with daughter..
