That's not known, and a part of what we were discussing.  It wasn't only kings or princes who had sarathis.  Had Adhirath been Dhritarashtra's charioteer, everybody - Duryodhan, Bhima, Arjun et al would have known Karna when he surfaced @ the competition.  But he wasn't, and they didn't.

Hence the speculation above about the river Ashwa, where it is today, and where Adhirath could have lived in order to pick up Karna.

Karna had approached drona for dhanurvidya before the competion? Is that true or is that another one that brc pulled out of the hat?

That one was true, and the reason he moved to Parashurama.

Its possible that Karna could have gone in search of Drona for his education and then asked Parashuram as he was turned down by the former.

From what I remember, Amba, Ambika and Ambalika's sister went to Parashuram to get justice when Bheeshma rejected her and a battle between the teacher and student ensued in which Bheeshma was victorious. Parashuram could have been living in the forests / river near Hastinapur.

Does that mean Karna was near Hastinapur when the competition was announced? I read a story that he went back to his home after he was cursed by Parashuram, the brahman and the Earth Goddess.

😕

Oh it's one of the several legends related to Karna. Once while he was wandering, he came across a child crying. On being asked why, the child replied she had spilt the ghee she was carrying in a cup and now hr mother would scold her. Karna, being Karna, offered the child not one, but ten cups of ghee in lieu. But the child was adamant, she wanted Karna to retrieve the ghee that had fallen on the ground. A bemused Karna scooped up a fistful of mud  and with superhuman strength squeezed it. The ghee that had been absorbed in the mud began to drip and the child happily collected it in the cup.

But someone else was not so happy- and that was the Earth Goddess. She pointed out that in the process of satisfying the child, Karna had squeezed to death the  thousands of micro-organic  creatures inhabiting the mud he had scooped.

She then cursed him that she (Earth / mud)   would be the cause for his death.

Poor Karna!  On one hand, the death of all combatants in the Kurukshetra war is deemed necessary to reduce the burden on Bhulok.  OTOH, a few microorganisms getting killed earns Karna a curse of defeat.

Actually, this curse would have been redundant w/ that of the cow-owning Brahmana, right?

Maybe Bhumi Devi didn't know the brhamana cursed him ? ðŸ˜† Or another curse, just to make sure Karna does not escape alive? ðŸ˜†

I had read a slightly different version.

Bhumi Devi cursed Karna for causing her excruciating pain for the sake of a child (or a few drops of ghee) when Karna squeezed the Earth.
