Tanmay Karlekar (8), brother of four-year-old Dhruta who was subjected to physical torture by her step mother, did not know about his sister's condition till Wednesday evening.
B B Janefalkar, principal of Swami Vivekanand Vidyamandir, Wada, where Tanmay studied called him to his office and showed him the news of her plight on television. "Shocked, he fell on his knees and cried for the entire evening. He did not want to talk about his parents. I asked him about his mother Vaishali's behaviour but he did not want to comment," said Janefalkar.
"Neither of the parents contacted Tanmay after the incident. His uncle did come to the school and had a talk with him for a couple of minutes," school officials said.
The principal said that Vaishali had approached the school in the second week of October and had insisted on admissions for Tanmay. "We were told that both parents were working and were not able to pay attention to Tanmay's studies.
"They said he had become careless and misbehaved at home. Tanmay was brought here on November 12. Vaishali's parents are well known citizens in Wada. So we did not really probe deeper into the matter. Neither Vaishali nor his father Manoj visited him in school again. I do not even know what Manoj looks like," Janefalkar said.
Neighbours of the Karlekar's have alleged that Vaishali had poured hot oil on Tanmay's feet during Diwali. "He was sleeping on the staircase during those days as he had been thrown out of the house by Vaishali," says Arun Amdekar, the neighbour who rescued her Dhruta.
Tanmay had even worked as a cleaner in Ghodbunder Road's Vaibhav Bar, neighbours allege. Kasar G, owner of the bar says, "The local sweeper had introduced Tanmay to me. He was working here for almost two or three weeks. Then we heard that he had gone to Wada."
Janefalkar adds, "After coming to school Tanmay has never misbehaved. He is a mature and quiet boy. It seems that he had stopped attending school for some time. Now he is studying in the 7th standard and has performed quite well in the last unit tests."

ADOPTION DILEMMA
There is a continuous flow of visitors for Dhruta Karlekar at Thane's City Civil. Many NGOs have evinced interest in adopting her. Some neighbours are also trying to get custody of the child.
The Koyande and Gupte families have been with Dhruta for the last 72 hours. Kavita Koyande, Dhruta's immediate neighbour says, "My husband and I are ready to look after her for rest of our lives. We have one child and it will be great if Dhruta joins our family. Both of us have jobs. So there will be no financial problems. The most important thing is that Dhruta is comfortable with me."
Rahul Gupte, another neighbour, says, "Although I am not married I would like to adopt Dhruta. We are a family of four and Dhruta will not be burden on us. We will make sure that her parents do not get her custody."
Meanwhile, the police is considering reopening the case. Narhari Jadhav, PI Kapurbawadi Police Station says, "We are planning to change the charges from IPC 324 to 326, which is a non-bailable offence. We are waiting for the doctor's certificate, based on which we can make the charges. We will ask the court for Vaishali's custody tomorrow."
