Part 1: Geetasree

Geetasri was sitting in front of the huge mirror of her room admiring herself. Today is the day she was waiting for a long time. Today Mahanta(priest) Devdutt will announce name of the next foremost Devdasi of madanmohan temple. And who doesn't know that Geetasri is the one whom Devdutt will choose. Since the day Geetasri has arrived in the madanmohan temple Devdutt has given her every kind of special facilities. She is given a whole room only for her which only the foremost Devdasi of the temple can get. Others had to stay together and share a room. There is a Devdasi quarter in a corner of the first floor of Madanmohan temple. Geetasri's room was at the end of quarter and the biggest one with a small veranda attached with it and a staircase going down from it.. Geetasri's mother was a singer of a temple of Baranasi. Maharaj Madhav Chandra Dev discovered her and brought her with him in Madanmohan mandir. Geetasri's mother Shivapriya Devi was happy to be here. She was getting old and was afraid about her daughter. Geetasri was beautiful and talented. She was proficient in classical song various kind of Ragas and Katthak dance in a very young age. Shivapriya was worried about Geetasri's future as she was well aware of the corruption that was thriving in Benaras.
Here in Madanmohan Temple she was happy. Maharaja Madhav Chandra Dev was a generous person. His devotion towards Chaitanya Dev was deep and real and his love towards music, dance and art was pure. Devdutt was of 22 or 23 then. He achieved the post of foremost priest in that young age for his great knowledge in Ved and Puran and Sanskrit language. He was a man of principle. When he took the charge of Madanmohan temple, corruption had already started spreading its tentacles there but he uprooted them with firm hands. In his presence Madanmohan temple was free from the corruption in the name of religion, superstition in the name of belief, prostitution in the name of Devdasi Pratha. He was such a personality and scholar that all the heads of society use to admire him and awe him. There were lots of people whose dirty interests were hurt but none had the courage to go against him.
In the temple nobody was allowed to question him except Geetasri. From the first day Geetasri was the object of his affection. She was sixteen then. He was amused by her talent. Devdutt took care of her studies. He was quite strict about it. Geetasri read stories of Puran, learn the epics and little bit of Sanskrit. Geetasri had a habit of asking question. She used to raise her queries whenever she didn't understand any ritual unlike other devdasis who followed them blindly. Devdutt would like it and answer them carefully. But Geetasri had to follow some restriction also. Like she was not allowed to go and gossip with other devdasis whenever she want. When others used to chat and laugh she has to do her study. Sometime she wanted to join them, she was very keen to know what other girls talk about, why they blush and talk in a low voice. It seemed they talk in a strange language. One day she went to their room hiding herself from Devdutt, they were reading and enjoying a story but it seemed really vulgar to her. She never joined them next time.
But she really find it difficult when foremost devdasi Mandodari used to come back from her 15days trip of Gobardhan Mandir. Everybody would encircle her with excitement but she was strictly forbid to do so. She wasn't even allowed to go near her. Rajlaxmi the only friend of Geetasri said, "Geet didi I am sure devdutt ji has chosen you as the next foremost devdasi, that is why he never allow you to get mingled with others and do not let you know about the Gobardhan Mandir trip, it must be a rule. Remember what he did when you danced in front of the devotees last year."
Oh yes how can she forgot that. She has learnt Odisi in this six years and she is undoubtedly best among all. She had seen how people applause devdasis when they dance. She wanted to dance in front of them but Devdutt restricted her from dancing out side of temple premises. That day she was desperate and went to dance. At that very moment Devdutt entered. Geetasri never saw him so angry before. She dragged her out by her hand from the stage and locked her up in her own room for two days. She cried and begged for mercy. She was freed only after promising that she will never do anything like this without his permission.
Rajlaxmi was sure all these were because he wanted to keep the would be foremost devdasi secure from other's eyes till it is not announced. So was Geetasri. She was excited that today onwards she will have all the rights of the main devdasi of the temple. She will get the permission of dancing before a huge audience every week and he will be able to visit Gobardhan temple every year as only main devdasi of Madonmohan temple has these rights.

Outside the temple a huge crowd had been gathering. Maharaja Madhav Chandra Dev was coming in this pious day. He had something to announce. The announcement of next Pradhan Devdasi will be also take place today. The buzzing of public fizzed away as Devdutt and king took their sits. Geetasri and other devdasis were waiting for the announcement somewhere behind which was visible to Devdutt but not to the crowed. Geetasri was wearing a lehenga choli which was totally different from others' dress. Other devdasis wearing a piece of cloth tying behind (like a off shoulder blouse) and another piece of long cloth worn as dhoti (the dress looked like the dress of Odissi dancers or Bharatnatyam dancers). Geetasri belonged from Benaras and so she was used to both kind of clothing. Devdutt stood for announcing the name.
" Devotees I know you all want to know the name of new Pradhan Devdasi of Madonmohan Mandir. From today the post of foremost devdasi will be adorn by Rajlaxmi Devi. I will request her to come here and bless you all."
Geetasri was shocked. Rajlaxmi was escorted by the othe devdasis. She left beside in her place alone. Tears come down from her cheek. Everybody became busy with Rajlaxmi as a huge ceremony was going to take place in her honor. Geetasri could not stand it any more. She rushed towards her room.
