Locations in movies

I know beautiful locales are very important in a movie... But.. Any idea why Los Angeles is called New York in a movie? Or, why Canberra is called Sydney?

I understand it's expensive to shoot in New York this is why Producers decide to shoot in Los Angeles and other cities , and call them New York in the movie.

But WHY?

Why can't the actors live in Los Angeles or New Jersey? Why do they have to say New York?

Anyone has any idea?

Does that change any thing?

Sometimes its obvious that NYC is not LA when they show palm trees but they don't do anything about it. I guess you can call those bloopers😆

Other times, it's much more difficult. Some parts of Kal Ho Naa Ho were filmed in Toronto instead of Manhattan, but why did they went to two different locations? I have no idea

As to why New York is mentioned, I guess its because its a major city so everyone may have heard of it and knows where it is on a map instead of something like New Jersey or Los Angeles (even though LA is pretty huge😆)

As for Australia, I'm not as familiar with its cities but I do know that Sydney is in it whereas I may have had to look up where Canberra is

LOL this is a good point 😆

I remember reading in the papers recently that a South Indian film had recently been shot here where I reside, Philippines, in some nice glossy mall

and in the movie, they narrated it as if they're living in LA 😆

what's LA got on my beautiful sunny Philippines >.< ahahahaha

I guess they just trying to cash in as much glamour as they can, with whatever their funds allow.

A LOT of people know Sydney, New York, by name

Canberra and all, not as touted

I feel also that filmmakers just don't give the audience credit in terms of locations of some of these films. I HAVE learned geography from watching some Hollywood films believe it or not😆

Simple, its the best place in the world.. 😎..and everyone wants to shoot there but can't afford too..😆

People in the west can easily spot the difference.. but i guess since the movies are catered primarily to folks in the east.. these guys can get away with it..😆😆
