Salsa, Latino edging out Indian classical dances in Bollywood?

05/01/2011

New Delhi, Jan 5 (IANS) When was the last time you saw a Kathak or a Bharatanatyam dance in a Hindi film? With fast-paced Western dance forms like salsa, latino and tango making inroads into Bollywood and being liked by the people, the casualty has been the graceful Indian classical dance forms.

Bollywood's dancing queen Madhuri Dixit, who wowed with her classical dance in 'Devdas', believes the younger generation wants everything fast and the international dance forms are easy to learn compared to Indian dances that take years to master.

'What is happening is that people want everything quick these days. It's a fast generation. And if you want to learn Kathak, you have to start from the basics. It takes time to learn the discipline,' Madhuri, a trained Kathak dancer, told IANS.

'People don't want to devote that much time. A hip hop step can be learned overnight, but Kathak cannot be taught overnight. So I don't think people have that much patience. It is saddening to see that classical dance that is our root and culture, is not getting that much prominence... somewhere it should be brought back,' she added.

Choreographer Pony Verma agrees. 'It is true that learning salsa, jazz, etc. have become a status symbol and are believed to be a style statement and as a result classical dance is getting suppressed,' Verma told IANS.

'With a base in classical dance, the body postures and hand gestures of a dancer become completely different and add grace even to an international dance form,' she added. Verma has directed dance for films like 'Namastey London', 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' and most recently 'Guzaarish'.

Among the new breed of Bollywood actresses, Esha and Aishwarya know classical dance. In 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa', Vidya Balan's semi-classical dance mesmerised everyone.

International dance forms are favoured by the current lot of choreographers and after dance reality shows, they are showing them in movies as well. Such dance forms will be seen in forthcoming films like 'Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji', 'Saat Khoon Maaf' and 'Patiala House'.

Ace choreographer Saroj Khan, who made actresses like Madhuri, Sridevi and Aishwarya Rai dance to her tunes, blames parents for the dipping popularity of classical dance forms.

'I respect all dance forms but I blame parents for not encouraging their kids to learn classical dance. Like they encourage their kids to take classes for jazz, hip hop, etc. they should also encourage them to learn Bharatanatyam and Kathak,' she said.

Yesteryear actresses like Vyjayanthimala, Waheeda Rahman, Hema Malini, Asha Parekh, and Jaya Prada are still remembered for their graceful dance moves, all thanks to their training in classical dance which enhanced their acting skills as well.

Vyjayanthimala is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and was instrumental in introducing semi-classical dance form in Bollywood.

Waheeda Rehman learnt Bharatanatyam from Mumbai's Sri Rajarajeswari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir and has even performed many times on stage, while Asha Parekh charmed audiences with her elegant dance, courtesy her mother who enrolled her into dance classes at an early age.

Bollywood's 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini is also a dedicated Bharatanatyam artiste and her daughters Esha and Ahana Deol have also trained in it. The mother-daughters trio perform together quite often on stage.

'For someone who has a base in classical dance, the expressions come naturally,' said Rajeev Surthi, who has choreographed for films like 'Don', 'What's Your Rashee' and 'Wanted' among others.

Surthi is optimistic and feels classical dance will get recognition slowly.

Thats really interesting..i agree that this is a fast generation, and people would rather see fast paced dances than slow....

However, a possible reason why I think that actresses don't do classical dance in their movies, is bc its much more diffucult, and just like the article said, requires alot of patience..

I think its the genres of bollywood that make dancing go flat. When you have a lot of films that are NRI based, then yes salsa and hip hop fit in more. Then in the Indian-like movies, item numbers that consist of gyrating your hips sell. So there is limited space for the classic forms of art in the industry.

Forget about classic art. Even real dance is not really required anymore in Bollywood songs. When was the last time (recently) that you saw something like this:

Like I said before, India is becoming a melting pot without any immigration and it's unfortunate. I fail to understand the obsession with the West, and the article is true in every sense when it mentions that Salsa, Hip Hop, Contemporary are ranked above the Indian forms of art. Since when did art become any less or more "better"? Reality shows are puke inducing with the so called "International" dance forms and the sick obsession with it.

Also it's not as if the actors now a days master the "International" form of dancing....I just feel like I am watching a C grade imitation of the dance. Nothing is right. Our children will be deprived of various, diverse Indian dance forms because they are dieing out...thanks to globalization.

When was the last time I got to see dance? Bhool Bhulaiyaa? Lets not even go back to Thoda Sa Paglaa Thoda Deewana and before that.

I feel it's okay to like the western forms more than the Indian forms as long as the preference does not stem from the belief that the western form is somehow 'better' or 'superior'. I've learnt both kathak and jazz and feel that they're both equally challenging and interesting. having said that, I do agree that an Indian classical base does prove to be helpful while learning any other dance form.

'western dance' is just a part of the package deal that we have absorbed from the west. the problem is that the current generation doesn't want to 'learn' the western values, it wants to 'ape' or 'mimic' them. there is a very thin line and unfortunately we are on the wrong side of it. however, I don't believe that an art should be endorsed simply because it originates from that place. we can trump the west at the own dance and so can they. a lot of foreigners learn the Indian classical dance and a lot of Indian learns the western dances. but like I said, the preference should not stem from prejudicial beliefs.

I'd definitely like to see some Indian dances in films, provided that they're actually 'Indian' dances and not some cheap item numbers ðŸ˜†

love that song of Aish.. Sigh* really miss those days.. we don't get to see this now :( India culture is so magical it is sad to westernize it ! I think it's okay to modernize tho! it is just bad to lose a culture!
