Today, I was listening to this song composed by Madan Mohan. The lyrics are simply sublime. I was wondering that why we don't have such meaningful and soul stirring lyrics in bollywood songs nowadays. What is your take on this?

For reference I am giving the first two lines of the song
.(You can check out the lyrics at http://www.lyricsmasti.com/song/2992/get_lyrics_of_Chaand-Maddham-Hai-Aasmaan-Chup-Hai.html)

Chand madhham hai aasman chup hai
Neend ki god mein jahaan chup hai

I think Anamika-ji made a good point. Unfortunately lyrics like don't sell to the masses like they used to. Feel free to disagree though because I do not live in India. Just judging on observations.

The thing is that in the world we live in today, the mass really cares about the lyrics. Very few are worried about what the song portrays and the true essence of the song. They feel the song should be known only for it's tunes, and nothing more. Therefore, we have songs like Nana Chi Taang making it to the top 10(at one time).

Aaj kal no one feels romantic by looking up at moon and sky while we have cute SMS messages to romance with.
Also, lyrics dont make cute ringtones 😆

This should be interpreted in the light of

changing trends of Hindi cinema; In 60s we had films made on script of great writers, poets, there was a solid story line, this has changed now to two category by & large, one is films purely for entertainment purpose like Dabbang, Wanted, God tussi great ho etc.
They obviously have a lot of non sense lyrics like oonchi hai building lift teri band hai, munni jhandu baam hui etc.

The other is made for NRI crowd like A-A, KHNK, IHLS etc, In this category we have some really good lyrics but that is not consideration not so great lyrics would also do (MO).

Finally there is a category where South Indian films are dubbed in Hindi like Endhiran, Humse hai Muqabala, Kadhal virus; now here music gets murdered by bad lyrics, since there are limitations to match words, mimic gestures hence we have
auto auto wala tu automatic kala
sab vinti kare hai
apna autograph do (Robot)

Or Premika ne pyar se jo bhi de diya
tere waste hai neelam jaisa (HSHM)

But even today when we have the right script, director, musician they weave magic eg

Taare Zameen Par (SEL/A Khan/P Joshi)
Lagaan (ARR/JA/A Khan)
Luck by chance (F Akhtar/SEL/J Aakhtar)
wow remember that song sapno se bhare naina..!

While on the average,I think lyrics have degraded, there are plenty of good meaningful songs still around sometimes where you least expect it. For example, the song from Johnny Gaddar, " Choti si zindagi, gehre se jeb hai" I think has extremely good lyrics if you consider the context of the movie.

And whether one appreciates it or not,the concept of painting poetry, literature and everything has evolved not just in India but all over the world. Earlier, a song's value came from simple melody and beautiful , somewhat flowery poetry. Now a song's value comes from complex arrangements and layering. The role of lyrics I think has become different. All modern art discourages floweriness. Simplicity and directness are valued more these days. I also think these trends have a cyclical element.

Values have degraded to a great extent, compared to the 40s , 50, 60s.😊

The lyrics reflect what is happening in the current atmosphere around.

The lyrics from 30s to the 60s carried a social message, due to the circumstances in which our country was undergoing.

The 70s brought a total cultural change.😊

The 70s were a transition period politically and it reflected to a great extent. The youth were gaining a lot of freedom in various aspects and it showed in movies like bobby etc.😊Art movies started thriving from mid seventies right through mid eighties , rightly so, showing us the change in society

The 80s were the beginning of decline in various walks of life.It showed up in music too😊

The 90s onwards were reflecting the globalisation trend and the fast, ME and I centric attitude set in.It showed.😊

I am not talking about those miniscule gems which shone in all these different periods.

The music in our movies have rightly evolved as our society did.😊
