I am a Gujarati Vaishnav; my family is pure vegetarian and I am married to a Bengali who are, if i may say, pure non-vegetarian. There is definately a rasam called doohibhat which takes place at the dawn of the wedding day. And fish does form a very important part of some of the Bengali traditoinal and religious customs.
The best part about our wedding was that we took the most important customs and traditions of both the cultures and followed it. Though the wedding ceremony itself was mainly Gujarati tradtional we also did a small Bengali traditional wedding. We even had two preists one from each side. The preists got along so well. It was just brilliant. I even had 2 bidayis cos in my gujarati custom the girl is sent to her in-laws straight after the wedding but in my husband's tradition the the day after the wedding the grooms uncle and sister come to take the bride from her parents home. So after the bidayi post wedding, instead of going to my husband's home we went to a hotel. Then went to my home in the morning and 2nd bidayi. I have to say I cried more during the 2nd one cos it was from home.
You know the best part was that during the reception and the ceremonies after the wedding which were manily bengali way and having non-vegetarian is very auspicious, to cater to my family they had a seperate vegetarian food area.
It was just brilliant. Both our families enjoyed it a lot.
When i see this serial and the way Madhav's family is behaving I feel so lucky that my husband's family were so accomodating. But I do know families that behave like Madhav's and such people make me really angry. Madhav's parents are the worse kind of hypocrites.
