Movie Review: Life Partner (2009)
Life Partner: Timepass flick

Rating: 2.5 out of 5*

Starring: Govinda, Fardeen Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, Genelia D'Souza, Prachi Desai, Darshan Jariwala and Amrita Rao in Sp.App

Director: Rumi Jaffrery

'Marriage' is the union of two souls in a bond, which lasts a lifetime. Though practically, there is far too much that goes into actually managing a 'marriage'. This is what 'Life Partner' is all about in a nutshell.

It is a story about three friends, Karan (Fardeen Khan) for whom 'Love marriage is the perfect bet', Bhavesh (Tusshar Kapoor) who does not believe in the concept of 'Dating' and prefers an arranged set up and then there's Jeet (Govinda) a divorce lawyer who believes in 'No marriage'. Karan's and Bhavesh's lives turn upside down when they marry their respective partners, Sanjana (Genelia D'souza) and Prachi (Prachi Desai) and how they re-affirm their faith in the institution of marriage is what the rest of the film all about.

Turning producers, director duo Abbas Mustan have not left any stone unturned from giving the film a grandiose look. Wish they were equally charged about promoting the film as there is no buzz around the movie. The locales of Cape Town are eye catching and Sameer Arya's cinematography makes it look so much better.

Writer-Director Rumi Jaffery has already proved his prowess in writing in the past and after seeing this film one can easily say that his craft in direction is equally good as far as films of this genre are concerned. But the screenplay (Yunus Sajawal) suffers on many counts as the film starts off well, dips intermittently, gathers momentum in the second half and drops again during pre-climax and climax. Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are funny at most places and tickle your funny bone at most occasions. Less said about Pritam's music the better. We also wonder how could a master lyricist like Javed Akhtar could come up with such mediocre work. Though each of the song numbers have been shot well, there is not a single song you want to carry home or even hum around. Watching Kuke Kuke number is fun because of Govinda and Genelia's histrionics. Editing by Sanjay Sankla needs some serious trimming especially in the second half.

Fardeen Khan has by now got comfortable with the camera and it shows. Tusshar suits in his part well and does full justice to it. Genelia looks cute but her dialogue delivery needs to be improved. Prachi Desai is very likeable and gives an earnest performance. Govinda once again plays to the gallery and succeeds in evoking laughter. Anupam Kher is like always, ever dependable. Vikram Gokhale and Darshan Jariwala are sincere in their respective roles. Amrita Rao in a guest appearance as a bar girl fails to create any impact again with her miniscule clothing.

All said and done, Life Partner can be a good fun filling experience this weekend (if you are not living in Mumbai) and can be watched along with your partner. For those who are still single, it teaches you the repercussions of having one in your life. So, be prepared!

Review: 'Life Partner'

'Life Partner' isn't innovative or ground-breaking, but it's interesting and entertaining.

One may assume that it's a nonsensical comedy, but it isn't. Instead, it's a 'family film'. It gives you a sneak peak into the lives of two couples -- one, who believes in love marriage and the other, who believes in arranged marriage.

'Life Partner' also surprises you because Rumy Jaffery incorporates vignettes from real life. Most importantly, 'Life Partner' entertains, makes you laugh [at even silly jokes] and keeps you hooked for most parts of the film. It's only the climax that acts as a spoilsport. But more on that later!

To sum up, 'Life Partner' carries no buzz and also the baggage of zilch expectations. But this film springs a pleasant surprise. You leave the auditorium with a smile, not a smirk!

To sum up, 'Life Partner' carries no buzz and also the baggage of zilch expectations. But this film springs a pleasant surprise. You leave the auditorium with a smile, not a smirk!

'Life Partner' is a simple story told in a simplistic manner. Director Rumy Jaffery comes to the point at the very outset and the principle characters and their characteristics are well established at this juncture. The film is laced with funny incidents initially, but gets serious as it reaches the interval point. In this case too, the interval point is a shocker and you await the second half for several reasons. The post-interval portions get more real, since the two marriages go through a crisis and the transition is depicted wonderfully.

However, the climax is a downer. Ideally, the writer should've come up with a better thought of conclusion, instead of the one that's depicted now.

Rumy Jaffery shows ample improvement over his previous film. He has handled a number of scenes very well, especially the Tusshar - Prachi - Darshan Jariwala portions. Pritam comes up with an ordinary soundtrack. 'Kuke Kuke' is the best of the lot. Yunus Sajawal's screenplay has several appealing moments. Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are first-class. Sameer Arya's cinematography is admirable. The locales of South Africa are a visual treat. In fact, the film sports a rich look all through.

Govinda is in terrific form this time. After 'Partner', the talented actor gets a role that does complete justice to his abilities. He seems to have worked on his looks and that only enhances the impact. Fardeen Khan is very likable. In fact, the role requires him to go overboard at times and he does that so well. Genelia D'Souza is the scene stealer. She's superb and one of the prime reasons that makes 'Life Partner' watchable.

Tusshar Kapoor pitches a remarkable performance yet again. He looks so perfect for his part. 'Life Partner' is yet another film that showcases his talent well. Prachi Desai showed abundant promise in 'Rock On!!' and excels in 'Life Partner' too. This pretty girl has the potential to carry off most difficult scenes with aplomb. Amrita Rao [sp. app.] doesn't create magic. Anupam Kher is just right. Darshan Jariwala is proficient. Vikram Gokhale is good. Jagdeep is superb in a brief role.

On the whole, 'Life Partner' may lack the hype, but this one springs a pleasant surprise. It's aimed at the families and that section of movie-going audience should take to it gradually, with a strong word of mouth.

Review: Life Partner is a pleasant surprise
Movie
Life Partner
Director
Rumi Jaffery
Cast
Fardeen Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, Govinda, Genelia D'souza, Prachi Desai, Anupam Kher, Amrita Rao

Taran Adarsh/IndiaFM

A few questions cross your mind when you're about to watch Life Partner. Haven't I watched something like this in the past? Isn't it getting repetitive? Haven't I had enough of mindless potboilers? What's Rumy Jaffery going to serve now? A rehash of what he's made in the past?

There's so much negativity surrounding Life Partner, even though you don't have a clue about its content/material. Even though you have no inkling what it has to offer. Also, the buzz is clearly missing.

But never judge a book by its cover. To answer the questions I raised at the very outset, let me say that Life Partner isn't innovative or ground-breaking. But it is interesting and entertaining. One may assume that it's a nonsensical comedy, but it isn't. Instead, it's a 'family film' (a popular term for socials/paarivaarik films within the industry)]. It gives you a sneak peak into the lives of two couples - one, who believes in love marriage and the other, who believes in arranged marriage.

Life Partner also surprises you because Rumy Jaffery incorporates vignettes from real life. Most importantly, Life Partner entertains, makes you laugh (at even silly jokes) and keeps you hooked for most parts of the film. It's only the climax that acts as a spoilsport. But more on that later!

To sum up, Life Partner carries no buzz and also the baggage of zilch expectations. But this film springs a pleasant surprise. You leave the auditorium with a smile, not a smirk!

Karan (Fardeen Khan) and Sanjana (Genelia D'Souza) are madly in love with each other. Marriage is the next step to cement their relationship. But is 'love marriage' the right way to be?

For Bhavesh (Tusshar Kapoor), his life partner, Prachi (Prachi Desai), comes with the approval of his family. But is 'arranged marriage' the way forward? Is it right to prioritize family over marriage? Does Prachi have to prove herself as a worthy daughter-in-law to qualify as an ideal wife?

Jeet (Govinda) is an accomplished divorce lawyer who does not believe in the institution of marriage. He can't be monogamous and is often responsible for his getting his clients divorced. But is 'no marriage' the right policy? Will Jeet ever find a partner and accept matrimony?

Life Partner is about three protagonists struggling on the marital marathon, but on different tracks.

Life Partner is a simple story told in a simplistic manner. Director Rumy Jaffery comes to the point at the very outset and the principle characters and their characteristics are well established at this juncture. On the whole, Life Partner may lack the hype, but this one springs a pleasant surprise. It's aimed at the families and that section of movie-going audience should take to it gradually, with a strong word of mouth. The holidays in its opening weekend should help the film grow!

Verdict: Three stars

Masand's movie review: Life Partner is sexist

Cast: Govinda, Fardeen Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, Genelia D'souza, Prachi Desai

Director: Rumi Jaffery

There was a time Govinda used to be the funniest guy on screen. You could count on him to take an ordinary scene and turn it into something hilarious on the strength of his remarkable comic timing.

Those days, of course, are long gone. The Govinda you see on screen today struggles to make you laugh.

In Life Partner, directed by Rumi Jaffery, Govinda stars as a cynical divorce lawyer who's convinced his best friends - played by Fardeen Khan and Tusshar Kapoor - have made the biggest mistake of their lives by getting married.

His buddies couldn't care less about his opinion, but when their respective marriages - to Genelia D'souza and Prachi Desai - hit the rocks, they turn to him to help them with divorce proceedings.

Neither smart nor funny, Life Partner is a recycled mess of so many similar films directed by David Dhawan in the mid-nineties which Govinda himself starred in.

It's punishingly long for a film with no real plot and it plods along laboriously reinforcing every Hindi movie clich you can think of - conservative in-laws clash with modern, progressive bahu; spoilt-little rich girl can't perform even the most basic chores around the house; spineless husband is torn between love for his wife and respect for his father.

You've seen all of it before.

There's a slim chance this film might not have been a complete write-off if the acting was a little inspired.

But what are the chances of that?

Govinda literally yells out his lines at the top of his voice, and he's so unforgivably unfunny, the only laughs he inspires are the unintentional ones - his costumes are too tight in all the wrong places, and his once-legendary dance steps now outdated.

To top it all he plays this Casanova who seduces every blond chick within a two-mile radius - really, there's just so much suspension of disbelief that the director can expect from us.

Competing with Govinda in the yelling department is Genelia D'souza whose squeaky dialogue delivery feels like someone dragging their nails against a blackboard.

The adorable little imp from Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na has turned into a nagging harridan in this film, and how you wish she'd immediately enroll for acting lessons.

There is nothing complimentary that can be said about the rest of the actors either, except that their lousy performances are luckily overshadowed by the afore-mentioned two.

Indifferently directed by a filmmaker who thinks fancy South African locales and glossy production values can make up for the absence of a sensible script, this movie is a challenge to sit through.

Sexist and offensive in portions, but plain dumb for the most part, Life Partner can be safely missed. I'm going with one out of five and a thumbs-down.

Do yourself a favour and find a better way to spend your two hundred bucks.

Rating: 1 / 5 (Poor)

CRITICS ARE SOMETIMES ASKED IF their rapturous reaction to films from frontline directors is a result of their having to watch all the dreck that's served up in between – and by way of response, I'll offer this week's other release, Rumy Jaffery's Life Partner. Even if Kaminey hadn't worked, you'd come away thrilled by the care with which it's been shaped – the claustrophobic closeness of the cinematography, or the finely calibrated performance details that result in such wordless moments as the one where the leading lady's tongue droops in approximation of death. A film like Kaminey makes you feel alive – while Life Partner makes you remember that you're two-and-a-half hours closer to death. The director may argue that a broad comedy about marital squabbles (with Govinda, Fardeen Khan, Tusshar, Prachi Desai, and a screechy Genelia D'Souza) does not require precision or passionate filmmaking – but why would we seat ourselves beside potential carriers of swine flu for the kind of jokes even sitcom writers would grunt at?

Ohmygosh ok so i just got home from the movie theater...and i really enjoyed watching Life Partner.
After the movie, i couldn't help but compare LP with KI(which had so much hype and which i was totally waiting for a while)...and let me just say, in my opinion, LP is way better. This movie may lack the hype but it is indeed a pleasant surprise...it was totally worth the money i paid.
The acting is great, the dialogues are refreshingly funny and on top of that one of my favs Amirita Rao is in it as a special appearance.😳 This is just the PERFECT movie to watch for the newly weds or just a couple. 😆
This may not be a "must watch" movie but it is def. "worth a watch".

3.5/5!

Govinda brings the house down in 'Life Partner' (IANS Film Review - Rating: **)

By indiaabroad
Sunday Aug 16 1:10 PM

Film: 'Life Partner'; Cast: Govinda, Tusshar Kapoor, Prachi Desai, Fardeen Khan, Genelia D'Souza; Director: Rumi Jaffrey; Rating: **

Some of the writing invested into this not-bad comic look at the roller-coaster called marriage is surprisingly sharp.

For example, there's this Gujarati family lorded over by a tycoon (Darshan Jariwala) in Cape Town who remains rigidly rooted to conventions that ended 50 years ago. Back home in Gujarat a modern business family run by a liberal patriarch (Vikram Gokhale) ends up giving his daughter (Prachi Desai) to the NRI tycoon's mousy son (Tusshar Kapoor). The conflict that ensues is likeable and in a fully filmy way, believable.

Elsewhere this spoilt rich girl (Genelia) with a father (Anupam Kher), who never bothered to discipline her, gets herself a domesticated husband who does all the work while she attends to various disastrous hobbies.

Genelia as the destructive daughter gets to sink her teeth into a meaty part.

Witty and sometimes genuinely funny, 'Life Partner' is a light bubbly take on the pitfalls of various kinds of marriages, arranged or otherwise, and how to avoid perils of getting into a marital alliance where the partners know nothing about the future.

While Genelia is happily over-the-top, Prachi in the rounded sensible part of a Gujarati girl standing up to her autocratic father-in-law does well for herself. Of the two young leading men, Tusshar as the timid believer in virginity as a gift to his bride suits his part and does at least one sequence when he bursts into tears after Prachi accepts his proposal with tonal correctness.

But it is Govinda as the frazzled divorce lawyer who brings the house down. Govinda gives the kind of tongue-in-cheek performance that once made him the number one choice for roles that required comic interpretations of social problems. He works well in combination with every actor in this film, wooden or hammy.

Rumi Jaffrey's direction is most of the time even in tone. But the last half hour with its screeching sermonizing gets on to slippery ground. Nonetheless 'Life Partner' is a decent inoffensive marital comedy mostly free of double-meanings.
