I guess cos I'm the kinda girl that wouldn't really be comfortable in taking the 1st step and being overlyy social, I'd just drop them a smile when I see them. :)
I went to some function thing the other day and I barely spoke more than 5 words to him that day but I did smile at him whenever I saw him and i could tell that from the corner of my eye, everytime I looked his way he'd be looking at me lol.
If you have mutual friends, it helps cos when you're in a group together, you can get talking. ;) Best of luck hun! x
