Science vs. Literature.

We all, from the very beginning of civilization have been acquainted to Literature and art. From the beginning of ourselves till today, we have been seriously devoted to modern and philosophical Literature. But after the epidemic outburst of what is now known as Science, we are truely and honestly drifting away from Literature and art. We have now adopted Science as our main potential and or main priority is: To realize and understand more and more each and everyday.

We do not seek to understand our benefits....atleast some of us don't. But being modern citizens of our respected nations, can we drift away like this? Do we really have the authority to distinguish between Science and Literature? Are we actually criticizing scientists and Literatis? Is there no end to this inhuman arguments?

That is why I have introduced this topic in this Debate Mansion.

Question: What do you think will lead the 22nd Century to further developement: Science or Literature?

Warning: You can only speak for Science or Literature. You cannot take both the sides or compare one with the other.

Please post your suggestions below.

why do we always discuss dichotomies? Why not hold the paradoxes together?

I am confused by your question. Science has always been part of most of the civilizations. That's how we got to where we are right now. What do you mean when you say,"we were with literature and art and now we are drifting away?" Define why type of literature? Science too has literature.
As far as I remember history, literature, art, and science have been an intregal part of our civilization.
Do you mean to say cultural or religious aspect of our history?

The problem is that you are offering people Sophie's choice. A choice between science and literature cannot be easily made due to the overwhelming importance of both in our life. Thats why people question the question. Firstly why do we have to choose and secondly what socio-cultural perspectives and implications do we have to take into consideration.

That being said for the sake of argument, what would science be without literature. Would we have explored the seas if Jules Verne had not taken us to a journey 20,000 leagues below, would we have dreamed of the moon if not for Herge's lunatic notion of man on the moon, would we ponder the future so much if not for HG Wells and his time machine. Even the geekiest geek who speaks Klingon fluently would agree that the future of science is no more than the imagination of our literary dreamweavers. Besides learning Klingon itself is a literary expedition.

Yay me!

For scientific development - science

For artistic or literary development - art and literature

So which development are you talking about ?

Personally speaking though , i think science has done a lot

Now , i am with art and literature, too much of science is unhealthy for life LOL

during where the christianity was ruling the european continent and before the age of enlightenment science was very much oppressed by the church authority. scientist did not have much freedom to say what they found out, what they know which opposed the beliefs and doctrines which was issued by the church. whatever that opposed the church beliefs in those times will be oppressed and they will be treated with discrimination and threatened to be excommunicated by the church authority and thus by the society as well. gallileo gallilei was home imprisoned when he said that the earth is round and the sun is the centre of the universe which was opposing the doctrines of the church at that time which proclaimed that the earth was flat and that the earth was the centre of the universe. this changed however with the age of reason and the age of enlightenment. during this age of reason and age of enlightenment many school of thoughts, philosophy, arts, literature sprung greatly and the churches' control over the states and the people were diminishing as people are getting more and more educated. during this age of enlightenment too as people are becoming more and more educated and there were a lot more freedom of speech for the people than ever before. at this time however and because of these different of ideologies, philosophies, literature science have sprung up. scientist were more free than ever before to give their statements and scietific results towards the community. the world cannot choose one or the other, perhaps a person can choose science over literature or literature over science but the world needs both science and literature.

Question: What do you think will lead the 22nd Century to further developement: Science or Literature? See these are mutually exclusive.. science is needed to understand the universe and ourselves better.. Literature makes us imagine and express things.... sometimes literature verges on being a philosophical explanation of life...but it stops there...Unlike science which deals with progress of mankind in fields of cure for diseases, ailments, finding the nature of the universe, identifying how natural resources can be harnessed.. literature merely is an artform.. and if it adapts to scientific changes it simply deteriorates...I dont think science killed literature.. its techonlogy that did..how many of us still want to go to the library and read books if something can be googled sitting right there in the living room..Other thing is .. because of technology.. everybody thinks they are writers if they have a blog....😆.....The fineness of being a poet or a wrtiter is lost and today the literature is a veri bad shape not because of science but just because peoplein general have deteriorated....over generations......

I think you are mistaking technology for science.. Science will always be the most superior to everything else...for many reasons...
Sadly every generation is subjected to the whims and fancies of the previous generation.......and especially in India they dont think when they provide courses in college....a guy studying arts or commerce is a dud and one who is in science/engineering is brainy... they never try to reach out to the better sides of individuals....
btw the couldnt get the reason behind the warning.. are you expecting only peoplewith extreme views to post?😆

Warning: You can only speak for Science or Literature. You cannot take both the sides or compare one with the other.

It depends.. what you like.. I like science. I dont like lterature since it biases your thinking and kills originality.. so if you talking about choosing one over the other as an academic choice.. i would never choose lterature...Besides I am not interested in dissecting other peoples thoughts through their literature.. thats another thing..thats like idolozing them.. if you can manage choose science.....its idolizing... nature and the universe...😊
