Indian Idol 4

Concept

Indian Idol 4 registration began on April 1, 2008. The show proposes that auditions will take place in Calcutta, Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Gwalior and Lucknow, with the possibility of other cities being added in the future. The fourth season will see Anu Mallik and Javed Akthar on the hot seats as they take judges' chair once again for the show. New to this season are singer Kailash Kher and Indian actress Sonali Bendre.

The final 100 contestants are slated to be chosen between June and July 2008, the final 30 by October 2008. A special "Wild Card" episode will take place on or about November 2008. The Grand Finale of season 4 is set to take place on or about February 2009 where the fourth Indian Idol will be selected by public vote and presented via a "Live" recorded performance.

JUDGES

Son of veteran music director Sardar Malek, Annu Malek made his debut as a music composer in the year 1981. After a considerable period of struggle, the 90's welcomed Annu with hits like 'Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayi', 'Baazigar', 'Jaanam' and many more. Today, Annu is one of the most successful music directors in the industry.

Known for his versatile compositions, Annu has directed music for almost all kinds of films without being repetitive. This is claimed to be his mantra for success. The beginning of the millennium saw him winning the National Award for his soulful music for J.P Dutta's 'Refugee', and also the Filmfare Special Jury Award for his outstanding contribution to music. He has also won the Filmfare Best Music Director for 'Main Hoon Na' and 'Baazigar'.

Annu Malek has been judging the television phenomenon 'Indian idol' for the last three seasons and continues to be a member of the jury for the fourth season as well. He remains the favorite among the viewers and contestants with his straight talk coupled with 'singing shayari comments'.

Annu Malek has also rendered many of his own compositions and has won accolades for popular songs like Garam Chaye ki Pyali, Gori Gori and the recent Meri Jane Jigar.

Javed Akhtar, an ace lyricist, screenplay writer and poet has contributed immeasurably to Indian Cinema.

Having won various awards and critical acclaim, he is a writer par excellence - be it soulful lyrics and poetry or hard-hitting dialogues. His work with partner Salim for many blockbuster films such as Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, Haathi Mere Saathi, Seeta Aur Geeta, Trishul has given the Indian film industry some of the best and truly memorable scripts and songs. It was this duo that gave Amitabh Bachchan the unforgettable 'angry young man' image.

Popularly known as Javed Saab, he has earned critical appreciation for the memorable lyrics he composed for superhit films like Dil Chahta Hai, Chalte Chalte, Kal Ho Na Ho, LOC, Swades, Kisna and Main Hoon Naamong others. He has won the coveted Filmfare Award ten times - thrice for Best Lyrics and seven times for Best Script. Besides being involved with the film industry, his music collaborations with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on Sangam and with Jagjit Singh on Silsilay topped the popularity charts. He has also composed the lyrics for Shankar Mahadevan's record breaking album Breathless.

Javed Saab has addressed lectures on various topics ranging from poetry to religion and communalism to national harmony at top universities like Harvard, Columbia, Berkeley, Cambridge and Oxford.

The greatest honour has been bestowed upon him by the Government of India ' he has won 5 national awards and is the recipient of the prestigious title of 'Padmashri'. Javed Akhtar is also listed as one of the '50 Most Powerful People in India' according to a poll conducted by India Today.
Sonali Bendre, who was most recently seen on television as part of the jury on Mr. & Ms. TV, now joins the esteemed panel of judges on Indian Idol 4. She started out as a model before making an entry into Bollywood. This tall lissome beauty is known for her versatility and the range of roles she portrayed on the big screen. It was her innocence, charm and beauty that helped her bag films and roles that matched her persona.

Her acting career saw her excelling in films like Love Ke Liye Kuchh Bhi Karega, Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Love You Hamesha, Zakhm, Angaaray, Kal Ho Na Ho, Major Saab, Humse Badhkar Kaun, Duplicate, Diljale, English Babu Desi Mem, to name a few. However, it was her role of a bubbly and chirpy girl in Sarfarosh that won her much acclaim and accolades. Sonali is also known for her work in theatre as well as language films in Tamil, Telegu, Marathi and Kannada.

Sonali is married to film producer Goldie Behl and has a three year old son, Ranvir.

Popularly known for his Sufi music, Kailash Kher is gifted with a uniquely soulful, high-pitched voice that has given a series of hits in bollywood music. From rendering his voice for ad jingles to record breaking songs like Allah ke bande and Teri Deewani, Kailash is now considered one of the top rated singers that the music industry can boast of.

Kailash formed a band with musician-brothers Naresh and Paresh, and together they launched the music album Kailasa which topped all the music charts globally. Inspired by his father and by the earthy, energetic strains of legendary Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Kailash Kher has already created an idiom of his own. Apart from singing in various films like Sarkar Raj, Fanaa, Baabul, Salam-e- Ishq, Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II, Dev he has also composed music for a film - Pranali- the tradition.

Television's heartthrob, Hussain Kuwajerwala, became an actor by chance. But today he is one of the most established actors in the industry. Though he did not want to take up a career in modelling, his stint in the fashion world bagged him a small role in the family drama Ashirwad, followed by Kanyadaan on Sony. But his portrayal of the characters of Sumit in Kumkum and Chirag in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi won him accolades and a strong fan following. Hussain is not only a good actor, but also a fabulous and engaging anchor. He has anchored several successful shows like Shabaash India, Kisme Kitna Hai Dum, Kuch Kar Dikhana Hai, Khullja Sim Sim, Indian Idol 3 and Nach Baliye 3. His heart-stopping smile, dashing looks and fantastic physique has turned him into one of the best looking actors on television and one of the most popular host.

Today, Hussain is happily married and settled with his long time girlfriend, Tina. His humility, un-scripted anchoring style and instant connect with the audience brings him back to the stage as the main host of Indian Idol 4

The 'cute boy next door' image turned Meiyang Chang into an instant favourite with millions of viewers last season. His demureness and charming smile made him the darling of the nation as well as the judges.

'Meiyang' in Chinese means mesmerizing, and so is his voice which thrilled the nation last season. He indeed is gifted with a magical voice. A Jharkand dentist of Chinese descent, Meiyang Chang speaks flawless Hindi and is a sharp and poised young man. His dimpled smile and simplicity has won him scores of female fans and love from audiences across the globe.

Chang has already released his own music album, Tu To Na Aye along with his co-contestantsAbhishek, Parleen and Suhit as a band F4, and has even won a role in director Arindam Mitra's film, The Seventeens.

From being a contestant in season 3 to now getting closer to the audiences as the host, Chang has surely come a long way. He will now be seen guiding the contestants and taking the viewers through the auditions as a host.

Deepali Kishore, nicknamed the 'nightingale' of Indian Idol 3, started singing at the tender age of 3. Her positive approach and her affable smile made her the audience's favourite. Deepali was one of the few contestants to receive the support of all the judges and was known to share a great camaraderie with her co-contestants. Judges believed that her voice quality was refreshing, melodic and had everything it took to be an accomplished singer.

Apart from training in classical music for 5 years, Deepali has diversified into dancing and acting too. An original bundle of fun and laughter, this vivacious girl from Patna has the knack of speaking in funny ways to make everyone laugh!

Deepali returns to the Indian Idol stage which brought her fame and love of millions of viewers. However, this time she will co-host the audition phase of Indian Idol 4 with Meiyang Chang.
