Starring: Ajith, Nayantara, Navadeep, Suhasini Mani ratnam, Jayaram, Suman, Nasser, M.S.Bhaskar, Sriman

Direction: Raju Sundaram

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Production: Ayngaran International

We don't really know if Raju Sundaram intended his directorial debut to be funny, but it seriously is. I mean if you can't laugh at a villain with a funny-as-hell-wig uttering claptraps with the seriousness of a chemistry professor to firangs and the chemistry professor who dresses with the lan of a stripper and sheds her clothes at the drop of a hat, you probably are born without any sense of humor. And it's not all that. Despite the self-realization of his flourishing paunch, Ajith quashes the beefy looking bad-men and handles mean machines single handedly, matrix style - all to earn the repute of a tough-police officer who is notorious for his bad-temper.

Nayanthara pouts sexily throughout, is exposed liberally albeit wrapped in a sari and an excuse for a blouse, and wears dangerously revealing tank tops and tiger print minis during songs. Well, after all, she is (over)paid for it but she seems to be in need of some serious career advice if she chooses to survive here.

What makes an actor like Jeyaram to take up a disgraceful role, as that of a college principal, who plots with his attendant to abet Ajith in his noble mission and thinks the explosive chemistry teacher is born to please the protagonist, is a mystery. Same applies to Nasser and Suhasini. Piya shows some potential, but then what is the point?

Yuvan's background score ebbs and flows, but the songs are largely pass. Ajith has indeed tried the best of his dancing skills in the Freedom song. His charm is also irresistible, but sadly lost in the dud effort.

If the movie made you feel like you were watching Raju Sundaram's goofed-up performance in the movie Jeans, it's not entirely your fault. He is after all the director and has influenced the entire cast's dialogue delivery and body language reducing them to laughing-stocks.

And if that's not enough, the end credit states 'Aegan's mission continues'. Now, we only wish Raju is not planning for a sequel or some such thing.

You must thank the cinematographer Vijay Milton and the costume designer for maintaining the subtle tone of the movie without which you would come out of the movie hall with a splitting headache.

Verdict - A futile mission

Looks like a Ok movie... still goign to watch this movie though.....should i run to the teather or not...any up for the challange..espically your mels Thala fan😳

Review

First Word

Major of the movie goers worldwide want to be entertained when they step into a theatre. So, do our Tamil audiences. If a movie fails to entertain and delight them, it rarely has a 'hit' tag attached. Here comes a movie which purely entertains – especially the fans..!

Who's In It?

The king of opening Ultimate Star Ajith, fondly called as 'Thala' is back again after the blockbuster hit 'Billa' with Aegan. This is his first and the only release for the year and has been in the limelight since production. Ayngaran International, the market leader in overseas film distribution has stepped into the shoes of a producer along with actor turned producer Arun Pandian for Aegan. Raju Sundaram makes his debut as a director and has also written the script which seems to be an inspiration of Farah Khan's Main Hoon Na starring Shahrukh.

Aegan has Ajith and Nayantara romancing once again on screen after their successful combo in Billa. The pair shares a much better chemistry as the lead pair in Aegan. The movie also stars Suman, Nasser, Jayaram, Suhasini, Navdeep and Poi Solla Porom Piya. Yuvanshankar Raja composes music for Aegan, making it a hatrick with Ajith. The cinematography is taken care of Arjun Jana, an assistant to P.C.Sreeram and Nirav Shah. Stunts are by Stun Siva. Anu Vardhan does the costume design for Ajith.

What's It About?

Commissioner Nasser and his department are in the search for evidence to have the pharmaceutical tycoon John Chinnappa (Suman) arrested for his life threatening adulteration in medicines and other illegal activities. Ramprasad (Devan), the closest friend of Chinnappa turns an approver and is on the way to justify against him in the court. He, along with the policemen is attacked by Chinnappa's men but manages to escape. The commissioner frustrated about the security measures of his men handles over the task of finding and arresting Ramprasad to his son Siva (Ajith), a brave and honest CB-CID. To carry out this mission of his, Siva is ordered to join a college in Ooty disguised as a student where Ramprasad's daughter Pooja (Piya) is pursuing education. The commissioner plans to arrest Ramprasad when he makes a visit to his daughter.

Siva after getting enrolled as a student tries to be friends with Pooja and her gang in order to know where her father is in hiding. In the meanwhile he also gets to romance Mallika (Nayantara), a teacher at the college. The twist in the tale is when he gets to know that he is an adopted orphan finding out the truth from his long lost mother (Suhasini) and his brother (Navdeep). The remaining plot revolves around how he finds Ramprasad who then leads him to Chinnappa.

The Performance

Ajith is at his best when it comes to his looks in Aegan. Anu Vardhan created wonders with her costume design in Billa and she does the same here, in a more fashionable way. It has been a while since we saw Ajith doing comedy in his movies and now in Aegan, his combination scenes with Jayaram, Kochin Hanifa and Nayantara are quite enjoyable, specifically when 'Thala' sings his popular melody 'Unnai Partha Pinbu Naan' from Kadhal Mannan to Nayantara. Thala's dance steps for the songs and his style in the action sequences are applaudable. Ajith's charisma and his presence are felt in all the scenes. Ajith has justified his words in his interviews when it comes to entertaining his fans. The first half of the movie mainly targets satisfying his huge fan following.

Nayantara has proved once again that she is the hottest among the femme fatales of Kollywood. Male audiences will be thrilled by her outfits in the movie. She is here to stay as the 'dream girl' of the men for long. Jayaram as the Principal of the college brings in a few laughs along with Sathyan. Nasser, Suhasini and Kochin Hanifa have played their roles with ease. Sreeman as the side-kick of Suman returns with an impressive performance. The only character in the movie which we feel that lacked an impact on the audience will be Suman's. After his equal and vital performance with the Super Star Rajinikanth in Sivaji as his arch rival, expectations were high on him. But in Aegan, he is scripted to be merely a comical villan who sobs after killing his men for their failures. His role could have been shaped better.

For the Techies Lover

As far as the technical department is concerned, Aegan is above average and excellent at times. Arjun Jana is splendid with his camera work maintaining the tones and shades we had seen earlier in Billa. The colorization is immensely good and gives the viewer a 'cool' feeling. The look and feel is awesome. Editing by Vijayan and art direction by Milan is worth mentioning. Yuvanshankar Raja has given the movie a few hits and an average re-recording. Raju Sundaram has another feather added to his cap as a director and writer who has made the movie to suit the taste of the Tamil audience and mainly have the eager fans of 'Thala' contended.

Final Verdict

Ajith's Aegan is a refreshing entertainer from Ayngaran. Kudos to Raju Sundaram & Team! Thala Rocks! Watch it for Ajith..!

Plus!: Ajith, Nayantara, Comic Relief, Less Emotional Drama and Songs.

Ahem..!: Suman's Characterization. Average Second Half and the Climax Fight Sequence
