Tendulkar creates history with 12,000 runs Indo-Asian News Service Mohali, October 17, 2008
The roar of a few thousand spectators was enough to announce his arrival on the lush-green outfield of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium on Friday. As Sachin Tendulkar walked in, he surely must have carried the burden of expectations of millions of fans to achieve the biggest record of his cricketing career.
Tendulkar finally crossed the figure of 11,953 runs, going past his contemporary great Brian Lara, to reach the milestone of leading scorer in Test cricket. He surpassed the record when he scored three runs off the first ball bowled after tea by debutant pacer Peter Siddle in the second Test against Australia. Tendulkar looked up to the skies, thanking the almighty for his achievement.
Congratulate Sachin
It took him 152 Tests and 247 innings at an average of 54.03 against Lara's 131 Tests.
Crackers were burst at the PCA stadium and all Australian cricketers walked up to the little master to congratulate him. Play had to be stopped for a few minutes as smoke filled the air.
The countdown for his reaching the milestone started during the recent India-Sri Lanka Test series in July this year. However, Tendulkar could not score too many runs during the series.
He again could not achieve the feat in the first Test against Australia in Bangalore after he got out on 49 runs, 15 runs short of the world record, in the second innings.
When Tendulkar got to the record, there were hardly 4,000 spectators in the stadium, most of them school children.
Lara had wished Tendulkar luck for this series to achieve the record.
Tendulkar also holds record of the highest number of runs in one-day internationals (16,361).
Tendulkar, who started his career versus Pakistan in 1989 as a 16-year-old, also has the record of the highest number of Test centuries (39) and ODI centuries (42). Sachin's Test career:

President congratulates Tendulkar President Pratibha Patil congratulated Sachin Tendulkar for becoming the highest Test run-getter in the world. "You have given joy to countless Indians with your batting," the President said in her congratulatory message to the master batsman. Tendulkar surpassed former West Indian captain Brian Lara's record of 11,953 runs on the opening day of the second cricket Test against Australia in Mohali. With no real chink in his batting armour, bowling to him is often a trauma for the bowlers, although Shane Warne preferred to call it nightmare. Equipped with every shot in the book and endowed with the flair to blend routine with recherche, Tendulkar grew in stature with ever game before eventually attaining cult status. Don Bradman anointed him as his heir and euphoric Indians fans deified him. He did burn his fingers with captaincy before renouncing it but the aura and idolatry remained intact. Unlike others, his name is not debated in selection meetings. They just enquire about his fitness. Loudmouth opponents like Australia refrain from sledging him, not as a favour but out of fear as it often brings out the best in Tendulkar. Bowlers fancy his scalp and whenever hit for a boundary, considers it comeuppance. For his legion of fans, Tendulkar has been nothing sort of a messiah. Everytime he walked out in the middle and took guard, he was expected to excel, regardless of opposition, condition and everything else. And on most occasions, Tendulkar did just that and his cult grew. His impeccable demeanor on and off the field and a childish love for the game have endeared Tendulkar to all, making him a genuine ambassador of the game. With this new feather added to his already well-decorated cap, Tendulkar is now in a league of his own. PM praises Sachin Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hailed Sachin Tendulkar as a 'genius' after the master batsman eclipsed Brian Lara to become the highest run-getter in Test cricket. "I congratulate Sachin Tendulkar on becoming the highest run scorer in Test cricket. Sachin is truly worthy of the mantle of the greatest run scorer in Tests. I have been following his cricket and there is no doubt that he is a genius." Tendulkar finally crossed the figure of 11,953 runs, going past his contemporary great Brian Lara, to reach the milestone of leading scorer in Test cricket. He surpassed the record when he scored three runs off the first ball bowled after tea by debutant pacer Peter Siddle in the second Test against Australia.
