DRACO: a victim of the circumstances

i know all of you hate malfoy as a character, we all rush to insult him, trample over him and condemn his actions. But just stop to think that Draco was victimised by Lord Voldemort. What would you do, with your father in Azkaban, if Lord Voldemort threatened to kill yuour family... what would you do???

obviously, you would do whatEVER lord voldemort asked you to do... and that is exactly what Draco did do... and you can hardly blame him, seeing the circumstances under which he decided to undertake the task of killing Dumbledore....

but even the desire to protect his family from th wrath of Voldemort fell short when he was just about to complete his task. Dumbledore, alone, wandless, weak, cornered... what more would someone seeking to kill him want??? Draco could EASILY have done. But in spite of wanting to save himself and his family, he could not summon up the courage or determination to murder Dumbledore.

Granted he thought Dumbledore was a muggle-and-mudblood-lover, that he was the worst thing that ever happened to Hogwarts.... granted he didn't approve of Dumbledore's methods and means, he still could not bring himself to perform the killing curse at the final moment...

Does that mean he secretly respected Dumbledore? Maybe yes, maybe no...

Did it mean that he did not want to kill anyone? THat's probably more likely...

Did it mean he was a coward? All you Draco-haters would support that... wouldn't you???

But think over it...

Draco was just a victim of his circumstances.... ultimately...

I never like Draco Malfoy in character till Book 5 because he was always shown as this rich, spoilt, jerk! But in HBP I realized he was human after all..He was trying to save his dad and himself too. I don't think its entirely his fault that he was born into a Death Eater's family but he did have a choice like Sirius.

Draco is a hard character to analyze...in the first few books, its obvious he loves power and is quite proud that his father is a deatheater. He even accepts to be a deatheater in his father's place...yet just like Sirius's brother, he begins to see that being a deatheater is not as easy and good as he thought. I really began to feel sorry for him halfway through Book 6 because you could see how trying to keep himself alive from Lord Voldemort, he was struggling alot within

and the only other friends he had was Crabbe and Goyle, who couldnt do much anyways. and he definitely couldnt ask for help from harry or something because of the enmity theyve always had...

yes misty you're right... being a deatheater is not all about dark glamour, or having people at your mercy... it's like FAUST'S pact with devil. when you take the decision to follow lord voldemort you don't see that you are ultimately going to make your OWN life hell...
probably draco realised too late... but even if he did realise, he didn't have options... his family was in danger... i pity him...

I always thought of him as more of a coward and a fool than a truly evil person like Voldy.

But, I did feel sorry for him in Book 6 because we finally got to see a more human side to him.
