Now, having seen the episode and having heard Stefan's super angsty frustrated 'leave me, forget me , hate me' speech to both Elena and Damon , i think that even though Damon and Elena's intentions are in the right place , maybe their route is wrong. You can't just get up , grab Stefam's collar , inject him , persuade him , pack him up in your car and get him back to Mystic Falls and in your life.
In the new episode, when Stefan aggressively and desperateky tries to knock it into his brother's head and his beloved's heart , you realize that on teh surface , there is no bloody way Stefan can come back to Elena and Damon. Coming back with them will mean breach of contract with Klaus, a full on betrayal , worse than that the revelation that Elena Gilbert is ALIVE. Its like unleashing Klaus' merciless wrath. Klaus , if he gets even an inkling that Elena is alive and that Stefan has been fooling him , he will turn everyone into bottles of blood and put them in his deep freezer. Then? Everything finished. So, instead of trying to take Stefan back to MF , Damon and Elena need to find a twisted way that may reach Stefan but does not go through them. They need to figure out and sort out Klaus because its Klaus who is the key to Stefan's release.
Klaus' grasp on Stefan is getting emotional now. He has unlocked a chapter of Stefan's memory where we come to know that Stefan and Klaus were besties , almost like brothers and that Stefan was almost in love with Klaus' sister Rebecca. Unlocking of that memory can alter Stefan's emotions and stance as far as Klaus is concerned. He was attached to this were vamp in the past and we will see the repercussions now. Notice Stefan's expression when he says - " We were friends." Its pleasant and nostalgic. And what does Klaus say to that? We are friends. Point being, that if by chance Stefan forges an emotional bond with Klaus or even worse both Klaus and Rebecca , his loyalty will cost him high. We know Stefan's problem, right? He protects the ones he loves. Infact , he can go to insane limits as we can see what he has done to himself to save Elena and Damon.
And in this emotional and moral schism, where is Elena's Stefan? He is still there. The ripper and Klaus' slave inside him threatening to break him away from Elena but his undead heart not letting go of Elena. Yes, Stefan is sinking deeper and deeper into his dark side and a life that threatens to kill every ounce of goodness in him, but Elena refuses to let go. Elena's Stefan in Stefan just cannot let go.
Its symbolical how Elena stood curled up in the closet that had an entire list of Stefan's victims. Yet , when she saw him peep in , there was nothing but emotional relief that she finally did see him. It didn't matter if Klaus was prowling around behind the screen. Elena, standing aganist that whiteboard screaming VICTIMS and that expression on her face - well, Stefan's evil side can shake up Elena but can it make her love him any less? I think not.
Later , you just have to see Elena's face when Damon sends Stefan to see her and tell her himself that he wants her to go back to Chicago. Elena seemed in an emotional trance and you can figure out that she can't believe that she is seeing Stefan right in front of her - in flesh and blood- taking her name - talking to her. She tells him what she has always told him- she tells him that she had to be here because she wants him to come back to her , come back home. And Stefan? Weighed down by his life , his circumstances and his belief that there is no road that leads back to Elena tells her in the harhest manner possible that he is not coming back to her. She should go home, forget him , forget that epic period of love that she had with him and just get on with her life. He is not the same Stefan and that is that . But does Elena care? She refused to be protected if it meant not having Stefan in her life. Stubborn , resilient , rigid , indelible love. That is Elena's love for Stefan.
But once again, for her sake, her life and relegated to his own darkness , Stefan broke her heart and walked away from her. To Klaus. From Elena and Damon to Klaus. From his promise of light to dungeons of darkness...
Stefan has put a THE END to everything and he has abandoned Elena. You see that frozen heartbreak on Elena's face when she tells Damon with a dry face threatening to burst into tears - JUST DRIVE. There is no reason for Elena to hope that Stefan will ever come back to her. So, what will Elena do now. Forget Stefan and get on with her life? Who knows...
