Software Help A-Z ListSoftware Help A-Z List![]() | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() | In some instances, when installing, launching, using or uninstalling a program, an error message may appear. Some error messages will consist of an initial introductory window containing the following general statement: "This program has performed an illegal operation…." Others may show only the error message. In some instances, a Details button is also located in the introductory window. This article describes how to proceed after receiving an error or illegal operation message. Before contacting technical support, complete the following procedure after receiving an error or an illegal operation message:
For Windows Me, press and hold down the ALT key on keyboard and tap the D key once. This will display the details of the error message. Record the information. NOTE: In some cases, only the beginning of the error message presented in the first two lines in the Details window is needed. (An example includes the following: "PMW caused an invalid page fault in module mfc42.dll at 0157:21114020.") After recording the details of the message, close all programs and windows and return to the desktop. Click Start and select Shut Down. Choose the option to Restart and click Yes (Windows 95) or OK (Windows 98/Me). When Windows restarts, try to reproduce the error or illegal operation message by repeating the steps recorded in Step 1. If the message cannot be reproduced, low system resources or a conflict with another program running when the error initially occurred may have been the cause. If the error or illegal operation message is reproduced, search the Software Help A-Z List for the program that was in use when the error appeared. NOTE: If the error occurs in a program not supported by Broderbund, contact the vendor of that program for more information and technical support. After the program is located in the Software Help A-Z List, search the list of issues for one containing a reference to the details of the error message. Click that issue title to view information explaining how to resolve the error. |
