A little unexpected thing!
#24: Don't look at me like that!
Twinkle was lying on their bed, thoroughly exhausted from the day's event when she felt Kunj's gaze boring into her. She glances over at him, sitting on the yellow chair opposite to the bed. "Kya?" she asks. Why was he staring at her like that?
"Kuch nahi. Bas yuhi."
She smiles at her husband's weird antics. And he called her childish!
"Kunj tun na-" she was about to call him out on his behavior when the shrill cry of Kairav rang out through the crib. Twinkle shut her eyes in defeat. It had been 2 hours since she had last fed him and that meant she had to get up now, get out of bed and feed him. She childishly whines because she just literally sat down! It was not fair!
But her love won over her aching body and she walked the little distance to the crib that held their new born son. She gentle picked up her baby and bought him along with her back to their bed. Yup, the way his tiny little fists were clenched and his tiny mouth was open definitely proved that the little thing was hungry. Holding Kairav in one hand, she reached over to the bedside table to grab her cover.
Kunj who had now been completely forgotten about by Twinkle, watched her in utter amazement. It never failed to mesmerize him, watching her like this. Watching her being a mother. He slumped back in his seat and watched as she positioned Kairav properly on her bosom, cover herself with the baby cloth and feed him.
And he feels completely incompetent in her comparison. How does a father even compare to a mother? How does he even compare to Twinkle, who fed their son even before he was born, who breathed in just to pass down her oxygen to him, who helped develop his little arms and feet in the warm comfort of her womb. How can we ever make up for all that she did and he didn't?
They say that a woman becomes/feels like she became a mother when she feels her baby move inside her. But a Man only becomes a father when he sees his baby for the first time and while this was true to some extent, Kunj wasn't entirely content with it. Because he is pretty sure that he became a father when he saw Twinkle become a mother. It was when he sees her nursing their baby that he feels like a father, it is when he feels her waking up in the middle of the night to tend to their baby that he feels like a father. He is a father because of her.
His eyes tear up despite his best efforts and Twinkle catches him wiping away the moist in his orbs. She smiles and extents a hand over to him, a gesture he understands well. He gets up from his chair and plops down right where he belongs-beside her.
Twinkle had just finished feeding Kairav. She delicately wiped the little traces of milk from the corner of his lips, placed a kiss on his forehead and passed him over to Kunj, to burp him.
Kairav was an absolute wonder to Kunj. Kunj loved everything about their 5 day old boy. He loved his little feet and littler toes and he loved his tiny hands and slender fingers. He loved his small, almost slit like eyes and the cute little button nose. Kunj doesn't understand how he fell so hard in love for a baby that is just five short days old.
He turns over to thank Twinkle. He had already done enough of that in the past few days, but she doesn't understand. He is THANKFUL TO HER. He finds her staring right back at him. Her eyes mirror his feeling and he knows that she knows.
"Don't look at me like that!" he finds himself saying before he can even filter himself.
"Like what?"
"Like I am the most perfect being that you have ever seen." He tells her softly. "I am not!"
Once a upon a time, when they both were young and stupid, he would have let her known that he was indeed the most perfect being that she had ever seen. But now-now he is certain he is not. How can he be when the epitome of perfection was sitting next to him?
"Tum ek bahut ache Papa ho, Kunj."
His wonderment for her increases ten folds. How does she always know what to say? How does she always know what he was feeling?
"Tujhe kaise pata?"
"I have seen it."
And she tells him she had seen it. She had seen the way he rushed to comfort Kairav when he cries smack in the middle of the night. He has seen the smile on his face when he changes Kairav's diaper despite the disaster in the diaper. He has seen the stress in the lines of his forehead when Kairav doesn't stop crying. She has seen him mark every vaccination date of Kairav in multiple calendars through the house. He was already a perfect father-he just doesn't want to admit it.
The tears are back with a vengeance. This time a couple of them actually get to break free and flow down his cheek. He sobs a Thank you' in a choked voice. Twinkle doesn't think a Thank you' can ever get more sincere than that.
Kunj places a kiss on Kairav's head once the baby had burped and then he carefully reached over and kissed Twinkle on the head as well.
He was a father. And he was going to be the best one he can be.
Twinkle smiles as Kunj lays down and places Kairav on his broad chest, watching him watching Kairav.
And she can't ever stop looking at him like that.
THE END.
