Both are right because both the teacher and both the student have to work together for the overall progress and both are wrong too. I will explain my perspective later but let us first analyse the perspective of the two characters of our story. BTW very good thread indeed.
Jetha's perspective :The teacher plays an important role in a student's life. In kabir's words
" Guru saman data nahi, Yachak sheesh saman
Teen kulo ki sampada, guru dinhi daan"
In the hands of guru lies the treasure of the three worlds. He is therefore the greatest of all. Kabir's notion about Guru is very interesting in this discussion. According to Kabir, Guru is above the almighty. He has to power to create the future of his students. Our old purans and Shastras also acknowledge the role of teacher in our lives. The shlok, ' Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru devo maheshwara. Guru sakshat param Bhramha tasmay shru guruve namah' says it all. We also have traditions of celebrating Gurru Purnima as mark of respect.
Historically speaking, every period of human race has an important man who had to enlighten the world with their golden teachings. Whether Buddha or Mahvira or Prophet Mohammad, every generation had a teaacher to rely upon.
Jetha's argument is therefore justified.
Bhide's perspective :Bhide on hte other hand stresses more on the student's duty and hardwork. Guru is not a magician. He can give you all he has but only the one who deserves will take it. A farmer plants all the seeds with care but a seed may just die away instead of growing up into a sapling. Can the man's intregity be challenged because of this ?
History has a long list of self made man. For example Raja Ram Mohan Roy who could speak into at least 15 languages. He was a self learned person. What made him what he is today is his hard work. Abdul Kalam Azad or KR Narayan whose name is enough to tell the magic of hardwork.
A teacher in today's world can teach you say 7 hours a day ? Is 7 hours enough to memorize everything ? What else do you need? Practice. YOu need to rehearse it on our own. How can the teacher help you there ? Student's should have the urge to learn new things. They should on their own come forward and clear their doubts if any. Your teacher will not be able to penetrate into your heads and know what you haven't understand.
Bhide's argument is therefore justified too.
My perspective : Why I said that they both are wrong because they both ignored the influence of the parents on a child's life in this debate. Father and mother are the first teacher to a student. They start teaching their child as soon as their kids are born. May be its not hte part of the conventional education system yet it is indeed an influential thing. Blame game is the worst you do to your child. More than that , Jetha himself failed to respect the teacher. copying him his son has no respect for Bhide either. I expect better from a well brought child.
Its parents duty to encourage their children to involve themselves in their study. Small things like making school projects along with the children helps them boost their confidence. Education is not an investment bond where you save and get with interest after the date expires. Besides, a teacher is not a every day labourer whose services can be marked by the amount paid. His ways may need your attention too.
Thus, all three the teacher, the parent and the student himself makes his own future. Each has a role to play and nothing works when one blames another. Our ex president ABJ Abdul Kalam Azad has rightfully said, "
If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher."
