Hello Everyone.. Here is the next chapter.. I hope you like it.. Please ignore mistakes and share your views.. Eagerly waiting for them.. I hope I won't disappoint you with it..
Chapter 7:
Ragini looks over to her brother eating his breakfast in silence and notes the lines of stress and tire lingering on his handsome face. She shakes her head, wondering when he will learn to calm down and whether he will realize his behavior will take a grave toll on his health. She looks to the others as well, munching on their meals in complete silence"not wishing to upset the head of the house. She lets out a soft sigh.
Ragini turns and looks over the staircase as Swara comes walking down with Ananya cradled in her arms. A small smile reaches her lips on seeing the sight and her eyes slowly linger back onto her older brother.
Annapurna: (sweetly) Arre Swara, aao aur tum Anu ko bhi saath mein laayi...
Swara: Haan Maa... I wanted to have breakfast with Anu...
Swara makes Ananya to sit in her lap...
Laksh: This is a lovely surprise. Now Ananya will start eating Breakfast with us from now, kyun Ananya?
Ananya looks over to Laksh with a goofy smile and gives a light giggle while clapping her hands together. Sanskaar looks on at his daughter with a fond smile. Ananya returns his gaze and excitedly lifts up her arms and begins jumping from Swara and trying to grab the nearest bowl...
Ananya: Pa... Pa...!
Sanskaar: No Anu, don't... Tuhmein lag jayegi...
A grumpy look begins to develop on her sweet face as she dislikes what her father says and merely jumps more with her arms out wide, indicating to him that she wants to be taken into his lap.
Sanskaar: (admonishingly) Ananya...
Annapurna: (giggling) Sanskaar, your daughter may be growing up, but her habit of sitting in your lap will not change.
Ananya: Pa...pa...! (jumping again)
He gives a resigned sigh and takes her out from Swara's lap who is trying to calm down her, causing a bright smile to erupt on Ananya's face and glee with joy. He places her securely in his lap and she instantly begins to fiddle with his fork and knife.
Sanskaar: Tum bhi na Anu... You are becoming very stubborn...
Ragini: Bhaiya, she only gets it from you.
Sanskaar frowns on hearing this while Ananya clanks her father's fork and knife against the glass plate happily. Swara smiles from what Ragini says and is reminded of last night. Everyone else watch with fascination as Ananya's presence at the table is bringing a change into her father's normal behavior, who rarely muttered a single word at the table.
Ananya's clanking grows louder and after Sanskaar attempts to remove them from his daughter's hands a few times ends miserably; he scolds her in an irritated manner.
Sanskaar: Ananya, stop it already. You are making so much noise. Put them down. (sternly)
Ananya, momentarily stunned, stares at her father wide-eyed as she has never been scolded by her father before. Seconds' later tears swarm in her eyes and she begins wailing loudly.
Annapurna: (softly) Sanskaar, let her play... Why are you making her cry? The poor girl was just playing...
Sanskaar: Nahi Maa... I know she is playing but what if she gets hurt by those things... She is way too precious to me... (sadly)
Annapurna: (uncertainly) Haan, lekin"
Ananya: (sobbing) -M-Mama! ---Ma-ma!
Astonished, everyone turns to look at Ananya's weeping face, taken aback by her words. Color flushes from Sanskaar's face as he hears this word, the very first time it has come out of his daughter's mouth. He stares at Ananya, baffled.
Ananya: Mama!
Swara becomes at a loss of words as Ananya stares at her with her big, wide eyes filled with fat tears while stretching her arms out to her, beckoning for her (Swara) to take her into her arms. Her heart beats fast as she listens to the little girl calling out for her.
Ananya: Mama!
Her eyes grow wide and she feels a jolt run through her body. She pushes back her chair and walks to the end of the table, taking Ananya out of her father's lap and carrying her in her arms. She places her (Ananya) head onto her shoulder and soothingly rubs the back of her tiny body while attempting to hush her.
Ananya: (chokes out) Mama, Pa...papa... pointing towards Sanskaar...
Swara swings her back and forth while gathering her close. Emotions stir inside of her as she relishes this new, profound feeling. She feels a certain happiness burst inside of her and an unknown deep, motherly love pouring out.
Swara: (calmingly) No beta... Do not cry...
Ananya huddles near the crook of Swara's neck and continues to shed tears while Swara finally meets the eyes of everyone else, all looking back at her with shocked expressions. She briefly meets a certain pair of that look back at her, electrified. She realizes the awkwardness in the situation, forgetting momentarily of the unexpected joy she experienced seconds ago on being called "Mama". She quickly averts her gaze down.
After what seemed like an eternity of silence, Annapurna clears her throat but shock clearly lingers on her face.
Annapurna: Swara... Take Ananya to the nursery and try to put her to sleep. She will slowly calm down that way...
Swara: (softly) Ji Maa...
Her eyes flutter back over to Sanskaar Maheshwari, whose eyes gleam back at her. She embarrassedly holds Ananya close and walks away from the dining area and to the staircase without another backward glance...
******************
Swara seats Ananya into her crib and looks to her with mixed views. Only she knows how happy she had been when Ananya had addressed her as her mother. Had she not acted like one since the past two and a half months? Feeding her, changing her, bathing her, playing with her, lulling her into sleep, and most importantly love her? Over this time she has grown such a strong attachment to the little girl that she can hardly go on in the day without doing any one of those things.
But the faces of the family members haunt her...Especially Sanskaar Maheshwari's... They must have not liked Ananya addressing her as "Mama". But they hadn't corrected her either. Why didn't they? And why didn't she? Why did she react the way she did when Ananya called her mother? Is this what Swara feels for the infant? Motherly love..?
She remembers Ragini and her sister Uttara informing her that she isn't a big fan of babies. Then why is Ananya a different case? Why the strong bond?
And where on earth could Ananya have picked up on the word? Swara knows no one from the Maheshwari family must have. Kavitha is a dark topic, never to be discussed or mentioned again. Certainly neither of them would have taught her the word "Mama". But she has learned it and even believes that it is Swara who is her mother. From whom could she have possibly learned this from?
Ananya, now completely settled, stares up at Swara with wide, shimmering eyes"as if wondering what it is that is on Swara's mind.
Ananya: Mama... (coos)
Startled, Swara fixes her focus onto the infant and shakes her head delicately.
Swara: Nahi beta, main tumhari Mama nahi hoon. Main Aunty hoon... Aunty... (stresses)
Ananya: (shaking her head, stubborn) Mama! (points at her)
Swara: Nahi, Ananya... Aunty...
Ananya: (yells) Mama! (again points at her)
Swara gives a defeated sigh. The girl's stubbornness always comes as a surprise to her. What should she do now? Does she let it be despite knowing the gravity in the situation? Perhaps she will try teaching Ananya later after she is well rested.
Ananya: Mama, Mama, Mama! (stresses)
Swara: (caving) Accha baba, Mama...
A slow smile emerges on her lips despite herself. She feels a tug on her heart strings every time she calls her mama.
Swara: Now go to sleep like a good girl. And I promise later we will go to the park. Teek hai..?
Not knowing what her "mother" is blabbing to her, Ananya, nonetheless, nods her head in agreement and allows Swara to tuck her in and lull her to sleep...
********************
She walks past the bedrooms with no particular agenda for the day and stops by one on seeing Shambu, one of the servants busying himself and looking slightly hassled. She hesitantly enters in and looks around, taking in the grandness of the master bedroom. She notes the masculinity in the room and knows she has entered Sanskaar Maheshwari's den. Just as she is about to leave, knowing it is not right of her to be in there in the first place, she is stopped by a startled Shambu.
Shambu: (smiles sincerely) Arre Swara ma'am, aap yahan? Did you need anything?
Swara: Nahi, woh... Actually I had come to see if you needed any help. Is this Mr. Maheshwari's room?
Swara questions while taking another step in, her eyes gazing around the large, spacious room. She looks to see whether there are any pictures around and sees there are only of his daughter and no one else. She frowns on seeing this.
Shambu: Yes... Excuse me on how it looks; Sanskaar Sir always leaves such a mess behind. (grumbles)
Swara watches as Shambu returns back to task, collecting clothing here and there. She listens on as he continues with his complaining of his master.
Shambu: I have told him many times that he must become organized. It will be best for him and me as well. That way I do not always have to come here expecting a mountain of mess every time.
Swara: (smiles at Shambu's complaining) But Shambu, you know that Mr. Maheshwari is a busy man.
Shambu: Yes, I know that. But even then a little cleaning up here and there would not hurt him, would it?
Swara reaches out for a t-shirt lying on the floor half hidden beneath the bed covers and politely hands over to Shambu who gives her a small smile of gratitude. He continues on with cleaning with Swara willingly following along.
Swara: I don't know. I think you are being too hard on him, Shambu. He hardly has time for himself. How can you expect him to take care of his room?
Shambu: Swara Ma'am being a working man is not an excuse of not having to take care of yourself. He is a grown man"you would think he would have the decency enough to clean up after himself.
Shambu stands up after collecting more materials from the ground and goes into a brief daze, becoming unaware of his surroundings.
Shambu: It had been so much easier before. Sanskaar Sir actually had someone to clean up after him and keep the room in order"now I am the one who is lef--...
She looks on at Shambu as his voice trails off and he snaps back into reality. He wears a look on his face as if he has committed a grave blunder. He immediately quiets down and resumes to his work.
Swara: ...You mean Mr. Maheshwari had his wife before to clean after him, right?
She answers for him softly. Shambu stills in his actions and turns back to look at her with a panicked expression.
Shambu: Oh, look at the time. With all this cleaning up I forgot that it is about time to start on lunch and I need to get few things from market. I will just be back Swara Ma'am...
And without another word or chance for her to say anything more, Shambu flees hurriedly from sight, leaving baffled looking Swara behind. She looks at the uncompleted task that he has left behind and decides that she may as well finish for him since she doubts he will ever make a reappearance considering the slip he had made in front of her. She picks up on the chore and cleans around, placing clothes on the hangers and into the closet, making the bed, arranging items on the dresser, and neatly stacking files, folders, book, and what not in an organized manner.
She carries the stacks of folders with her and walks on over to one of the nightstands beside his bed, wanting to make them available and keep them in a safe place. As she opens one of the drawers, she peers inside and notices that it is a mess inside there as well. Swara sets aside the folders and begins in cleaning the drawer as well. She arranges sheets of papers and other belongings neatly and as she scurries deeper into the pile of mess she comes across something that slips out. She takes it into her hand and stares at it with shock...
