The Id, Ego and Superego of Suvreen Guggal – Topper of the Year

Would you wonder why the Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality that is composed of three elements is the title of our article today? Well, we are trying to analyse the behaviour and personality of various characters in the show and see at what stage of personality development have these characters evolved. The Id, The Ego, The Superego and which character stands for out us to classify them. The idea is to see, if these characters have a personality that we can pin down or are they unique individuals that defy every theory?

Suvreen Guggal – Topper of the Year obviously is seeing some clashes of wills between its characters. On one hand we have Suvreen Guggal (Smiriti Kalra) and Alisha Dewan (Heli Daruwala) having a cold war that has just heated up. Suvreen has finally decided to take this war out in the open. Then we have Yuvraj Singh (Shivin Narang) and Samar aka Maddy (Karamjeet Singh Rajpal) behave like two bulls in a ring with horns drawn at each other and one wonders if it is for Suvreen or they have an axe grind that is all theirs. Is it a war between proprietary or propriety? Lastly, and interesting in an amusing way, is the war between Rehan Charles aka RC (Mohit Malik) and Jolly Shawne (Praneet Bhatt) who at logger heads and is it just about ideas that they fight about or are there undercurrents that we cannot see yet?

Now, how do these characters fit into the Freudian theory? Well, we perhaps are as eccentric as Jolly at some level, as artistic as Suvreen and as twisted as Alisha. But then this is not about us but the characters you love. So back to the topic.
Id is the element of personality that is present from birth. It is driven by pleasure principle and instant gratification of all wants, desires and needs is what it strives for. So the personalities that fit here to us are of course, Preeti (Adiiti Chopra) who of course find pleasure in food and like an infant needs to satisfy that desire to eat instantly. Another person we feel that fits in is Jolly. He finds pleasure in jibes that he throws at RC and his childish behaviour.

Ego is the state of personality that deals with reality. It develops from Id and expresses the impulses of Id in a manner acceptable in real world. So ego works on the reality principle. The characters we find who fit into this stage of personality development are Yuvraj Singh and Ira (Simple Kaul). Yuvraj Singh would love to act on his impulses but does what is acceptable be it to come to Mumbai and tear Maddy's eyes out as he believes, Samar aka Maddy is trying to get too close to Suvreen besides not liking the way he insults her. Ira is a character who loves RC and has seen how fond he is of Suvreen, but she curbs the pleasure she would get out of removing Suvreen from RC's vicinity but stand hands folded, seething and be a person that is calm and collected. Of course, we did see her flare up in private with Suvreen and fired her as well.

Superego. The last component of our personality to develop that gives us the sense of right and wrong. The superego provides guidelines for making judgements. There two parts to this, the good behaviour standards by ego ideal and the bad behaviour standard determined by the conscience. Now, who fits into this? Suvreen Guggal does. She exhibits a personality that works on the ideal and the conscience to strike a balance between dream, reality and the right. Besides her, we see, Soni exhibit similar behaviour though sometimes she lets the Id become completely dominant, like the party at Maddy's place.

Now, tell us what you think of these characters and do you try to strike a balance between these conflicting forces of Id, Ego and Superego? At what stage do you let one of them overrule the other? Who in the show do you think has achieved a good ego strength according to you and Freud (If you know his theory)?
Lets Discuss. What about Suvreen Guggal's personality would you want to emulate or wish you had yourself? And why just Suvreen, which personality trait of each character would you like to possess yourself?
