Discussion of the Week

Week 1: Alaknanda

Hello fellow SSians!😛

Me and Kimi are opening this DOTW topic and we will be discussing one character every week.
This week, we will be talking about Alaknanda and her journey from the very beginning to now.
For those of you who do not know her much, here is a brief intro of her:

Alaknanda is the favorite bahu of the Bharadwaj family and was married to Kumar, who never loved her and was in love with Vasundhra. Kumar dies and Alak becomes a widow and strives to survive in a society where a widow is deemed untouchable, characterless and unlucky. She gets this from Ammaji too. Meera takes it on to remarry her to Alak's estranged love, Shantanu. Ammaji finds out that if they marry, Alak will have a male heir born so she lets them marry.
Alak get pregnant and the doctors find out that if she does not have an abortion, she can die. Ammaji knows but hides this fact. Agnishikha, sister of Vasundhra, comes in as the daughter in law of Irawati's son and tries to create havoc in Alak's life. Alak gets into an accident where she finds out the truth about her pregnancy. she bashes Ammaji but still decides to go on with the pregnancy.

So, after reading this intro, her are some questions to discuss on:

1. Seeing Alak's past, she seemed to know of Kumar's affair with Vasundhra, yet she remained silent. Did she do the right thing by silencing herself? Should she have fought for Kumar's affection and thrown Vasundhra out of their lives?

2.. When Alak was widow, she tolerated all injustices done to her. Was she right to tolerate it all or should she have stood up for herself and fought society and family for her rights as a human being? give your reasons for your answer.

3. Now that Alak is married and has a happy life, if and when she finds out the truth of Agnishikha, what, in your opinion should she do?

4. Should Alak risk her life for Ammaji's heir to the throne and go through with the pregnancy? or should she just care for her life and go through with the abortion?

5. If she does abort the baby, should she contiue to stay under the roof which gave her so much misfortune? or should she and Shantanu leave the house and settle somewhere far away?

6. As a mother, is it right of Alak to hide the complications of her pregnancy from Shagun?

Ok, thats all right now.
Lets all discuss this and if anyone wants to talk of something else about Alak, feel free to post here and lets discuss it this week.

Have fun everyone and please do participate!😃

Cheers,
SS Devt. Team

1) I don't think she should've bothered fighting for Kumar's affection, she should've just left him.
2) She was wrong to tolerate all the things that happened to her because she wasn't getting the chance to remarry. She was never loved by Kumar and she never loved him.
3) She'll blame herself if she finds out the truth about her daughter. She'll probably think that her daughter is following her example as she remained quite also.
4) I think she should go through with an abortion, it'll teach Amma ji something too. She doesn't deserve to be treated like this, I don't think she should die for an heir. Her life is precious too.
5) Shantnu and her should get a different house since everyone's pretty much plotting against her. 😕
6) She thinks she's protecting her child, because if Shagun found out the truth, she'd make her mom abort. As a mother, it seems the right thing to do, I think. ;/
