Twisting characters to suit today's sensibilities

First, I would list out what I like about the show.

The music
The near-perfect casting of SriRam. Devi Sita too is good choice.
The visuals

The show started with great promise. That this is based on Ramayan and is shown from Sita's perspective. And that relationship between Ram n Sita will be the focus.

To be fair, the show doesn't claim to be totally based on any Ramayan.

But what the show does often is to twist characters to suit modern sensibilities.

Many poets who wrote Ramayan after Sage Valmiki added a lot of scenes, many of whome were based on pointers in original text. But the characterization remained close to original.

They want to show importance/neglect of girl child. And the whole Shanta episode is weaved accordingly. Kausalya sheds tears copiously.

Dasharatha does an Ashwamedha after Rama's birth?(No) And Rama suggests alternative to animal sacrifice to suit today's value system. Ashwamedha is forbidden in Kaliyuga and was a rare event even in those days. Then what is the reason to show this? Aren't Rama and Ramayana both products of their time? Rama himself performed Ashwamedha.

Kaikeyi turns scheming way too early. So Bharata n Shatrughna are packed off too early. They were not around when Rama left with Vishwamitra but are back just in time for the swayamvar.

What do we call this? Saas-bahu-kitchen-politics hangover?

Sita questions Ram directly about polygamy. And Rama responds. Like someone said in this forum, everything is out in the open. Nothing is subtle or nuanced.

And in Swayamvar, Sita and Janak are repeated insulted regarding Sita's birth. Why? Only to make Rama look like a saviour? It this in anyway modern?

Sita's birth is now a recurring theme. Yesterday, Manthara used it and today Kaikeyi. Waiting for the episode where she is openly taunted in her sasural. This is cheap. Again, kitchen politics hangover mixed with attempts to show that birth doesn't determine greatness. Is this the way? Poor messenger of 'gyan bhumi' mithila was made to look like an ignorant person.

Epics have open/loose ends. Everything is being closed tightly to make it look perfect as the makers n viewers want to see-- with totay's sensibilities. Ramayana has lot of timeless and universal values but everything doesn't have to conform to today's value system. If it did, there wouldn't have been need for Mahabharata. And Ramayana is great because it drove the message.

And I know the timing of this is wrong. We will see more.

But there are some nicely done scenes and that keeps the show going for me.

Ramayana has 2 other names. Poulatsya Vadha(Ravana's killing) and Sitayascharitam Mahat.- the great story of Sita. I hope the greatness reflects.

I think this thread should stay. Just as many threads are being created almost after every episode regarding the characters, the scenes etc about the positive side of the show @pasu has voiced her opinion regarding the negative side.
All those in the forum need to accept this to.
Saying these opinions should only be in the distortion thread is not right.

It is the strong fan base that can actually get the cv to change things in the serials.
The forum is visited and many a times they do take pointers from the various threads.
The thread created for the terrible makeup, I am sure they will take note and do the need ful.
And no one is bashing any actor here.

I agree on the whole Sita's birth..they keep saying that she is an orphan which completely turns me off...the previous versions of Ramayan never made an attempt to dishonor her based on her birth...in fact there was a sense of respect and divinity shown that she was born from the soil hence she was special..
I hope they don't take the whole taunting at sasural thing and shove it down our throat. It would be such a turn off.

Your thread/post should stay. You've made some really good constructive criticism and praised the show where credit was due.

On the whole I have to say I'm enjoying SKR except for some styling issues and the whole Sita being orphan where she is constantly insulted.

Same here...it's the intermittently nicely done scenes that keep the show going for now for me too.

I actually liked the cliff scene when Sita questions him about his views on polygamy cuz that was still handled in a relatively subtle manner in terms of back and forth b/w Ram-Sita compared to what they showed today where she was literally pestering him to give his views on the food...that level of pestering only looks like badgering and disrespect then...it is when they lower Sita to that level that I'm bothered.

Saas-bahu kitchen politics are there in every other mythos nowadays...I could still have let the OTT Kaikayi related/Sita's birth related melodrama slide if they atleast kept Sita's dignity and serenity intact...but they often sacrifice it in the need to show some misplaced sense of questioning in Sita's character...that really undermines things.

How can sita be an orphan, she is bhumija, born of mother earth herself, can there be a greater mother than mother earth??
Obviously the writers are writing with their pen not their souls.
Todays episode
Ram saving Sita!!!!!
Damsel in distress,😕 much loved amongst the youngsters!!!
Siya Ke Ram was about siya Strength!!
So I would have preferred her Standing NEXT to Ram and not go behind him.
I hope what I saw in pre cap is not what I am going to see today!!
