Author's note: I can't describe how eager I was to watch the first episode of Satyamev Jayate-Dil pe lagegi, tabhi baat banegi. All I knew it would be unique in its own way as the name Aamir is a synonym of perfection and innovation. Hats off Aamir for living up to your name's stature and bringing the heart wrenching facts about female infanticide in front of the masses!
Although this topic is not something which has made its debut today, but the way it was presented and supported with facts made the difference and that too words coming from the mouth of mighty Aamir Khan. Was it not a shocking revelation that it is the urbane and elite who were the ones who initiated and are more responsible for female infanticides till date? Usually we have a tendency to conveniently blame the small towns and rural uneducated India for all the social issues that plague us. We have the distinction of killing 3 crore female infants in their mothers' wombs in the last 30-40 years- so we proudly say India Shining! The credit of introducing the infamous combo package of ultrasound and abortion goes to our government hospitals-what a shame!!
It was equally disgusting to see the sting operation video footage of a lady doctor playing the perfect partner in crime by inhumanly uttering "Kahin bhi shamshaan vaigerah mein gaar do" or "packet mein dal ke Yamuna mein daal do". Why do the ethics of the Hippocratic oath taken by the doctors vanish into thin air during such testing times? God bless their corrupt minds.
We could see many teary eyed viewers and a shocked Aamir on meeting those few women who had to undergo forced abortions or were abandoned and abused for bearing daughters. I am falling short of adjectives for the mothers-in-law in these cases. When mothers are revered so much in our society, I wonder how the desire to have a male successor overpowers their motherly instincts. On the positive side, I take the opportunity to salute few of the unsung heroes who were introduced in the show- the journalists Meena Sharma and Shripal Shaktawat who are paying the price of their sting operation till date by running around courts. Kudos to the fighters Amisha, Parveen Khan and Dr. Mitu Khurana who have fought against all odds to give life to their daughters and are proudly bringing them up. I am sure the list of fighters is long enough to be covered in an episode, a big round of applause for all of them. Last but not the least, people of Nawanshaher Punjab-take a bow for taking action and achieving results in this regard.
What I find commendable about this show is that it is not just highlighting the alarming situation but trying to attack the root cause as well. Today's episode has raised a few questions in my mind. Why blame just the lack of education behind this heinous crime? Does a 'kuldeepak' really illuminate our lives even if he comes at the cost of committing a crime of killing an infant soul who has not seen the light of the world yet? In today's world, are daughters not fulfilling their duties towards their parents? Then why do we become oblivious to the aftermath of female infanticide which hits us back in the form of increased crime rates against women, imbalanced sex-ratio, human trafficking and more. Will just putting the doctors behind bars by going the Korea way put an end to the issue? I agree,it will minimize and control to an extent but I think it's more to do with demand supply chain. Is the issue not deep
routed somewhere in our minds and value systems and the doctors are just taking advantage of the situation?
The tag line says 'Dil pe lagegi, tabhi baat banegi'. Let's hope this touches the millions of hearts and kuch baat ban jaye. I wish this becomes a mass movement and all of us enlighten ourselves using the 'Jadu ki Chari' which as he rightly says lies within us .I am earnestly looking forward to the next episode which surely will bring another harsh reality of our so called culturally rich society. In the meanwhile I have
supported Aamir's cause by sending SMS Y to 578211. Let's join hands together and give our miniscule contribution to this cause.
Jai Hind- Satyamev Jayate!!
