She relaxed against the soft leather of the newly bought Buick LaCrosse, as it drove along the Yamuna Expressway that connects Delhi, Nioda and Banaras. The mere thought of Banaras always brings back memories - some fond and some bitter, very bitter.
She sighed and took a quick glance at the man sitting next to her, who was patiently checking the time on his watch. She involuntarily smiled at his thoughtful expression. Six years of marriage and he was still patient as ever. To say she was impressed is an understatement.
Steering her view to the passing trees on the highway, she distracted herself with vague thoughts. However, a beautiful sight captured her attention. A bird was perched on a lone branch on a tree, with two baby birds in a cute nest, some distance away. She watched, intrigued, at how one of the babies was trying to fly already.
Fiddling with her 6 year old mangalsutra, she reminisced about the times she spent with her cousin-sister. They had been so close, yet she wasn't present to witness her become a married woman, let alone, being kept up-to-date about her latest worries, she sighed sadly.
The more she thought of the little birds, she became sad. The birds represented so much in her life. Her longing for a glimpse of her sister has resurfaced. Many times, she cried silently, blaming herself for all the misunderstandings. Maybe, just maybe, would always be the one word that will haunt her for life.
As the car turned off the highway onto the dusty path to Banaras, she adjusted her dupatta and plastered a small smile on her face. Her husband raised his eyebrows at her gesture. She knew he sensed something amiss before they left their small bungalow in busy and fast-paced Delhi.
She was about to reassure him but, as if on cue, tiny droplets spluttered against the roof of the sleek car. Rain was always exciting, in her perspective, so immediately, her small smile was replaced with a big, goofy grin whilst her husband's worried expression was replaced with an amused one, as he watched his wife excitingly pushed the button on the side of the door to lower the window.
It rained all the way to the Garg's residence. Stepping out the car, she saw her mother at the door with her pooja ki thali, as usual, waiting to welcome her. Seeing the tears that are flowing freely now on her mother's face, she let all her inhibitions wash away with her own tears as she ran into her mother's waiting arms.
*********************************************
It had been raining heavily since the past two days. New York had never witnessed a storm so harsh in the past eight years since she had moved. The dreaded phone call had arrived last night and to her relief, the floodgates of heaven had closed.
"What irony! The cyclone in her heart affected her more than the rough weather!" she thought loathingly.
She had locked away the past in a corner of her soul but the memories were still powerful to create havoc within. She realized she had been drawing rough patterns on the window of her Audi, "some habits never die," she mused.
Her driver was driving her to the airport usually she loved to drive but she had ended up drinking more than four glasses of wine to smooth her frayed nerves. Her secretary had not only managed to secure a business class ticket to Delhi on the first flight flying out of the city, but even a seat on the connecting flight to Varanasi, "Zara definitely deserved a raise."
She reached the airport in record time, thanked Mr Smith, loaded her luggage on the trolley and proceeded to complete the formalities of checking in. She glanced at her "I Am Watch" which she had gifted herself on her last birthday. She was pleased to see that she would reach Banaras in the evening.
She was on Autopilot and before it had actually registered, she was seated at the window. The man next to her smiled, his co-passenger was striking. Tall, slim, heart shaped lips with a hint of gloss making them all the more kissable, her honey brown hair cascaded down her back , so simply dressed in a blue jeans and black blouse, yet she looked good enough to grace the cover of a fashion magazine. He tried flirting; usually she always enjoyed the 'Mating Rituals', but today she was not in the mood. She ran her fingers through her hair pulling them in a ponytail, making sure he glanced on the nine carat diamond solitaire from Tiffany's, set in a sparkling platinum halo of twelve small emeralds settling in soft curves, it adorned her well manicured finger. It still had the potential to make her heart skip a beat just like the man himself. She toyed with it wondering if she should keep it on.
More than the destination, she was looking forward to the twelve hour flight so that she could sleep undisturbed - no phone calls or any message beeps on her iPhone. It had been three years since she was working 6 days a week with no real vacation. This week was well deserved whatever the occasion. She had promised herself she would not mull over the past, nor ponder over the future and take one day at a time. "The Quarter Mile "approach as she called it and it had worked wonders for her professionally.
The flight was uneventful, she slept peacefully for a good eight hours while she spent the rest reading on her Mac Book. Both the flights were on time and she landed at Lal Bahadur Shastry Airport, where a BMW 745 was waiting to take her to the Nadesar Palace. She did not want to go back to the house where her family lived, she could not face everyone and start living intimately after 8 long years. She would meet everyone on the Ghats directly but before that, she removed the ring and placed it in her hand bag. It would be in everyone's best interest for now.
