The more I saw Sajan Ghar, a distant memory was tickled and yesterday the name flashed upon my mind- I remembered reading an Amar Chitra Katha as a kid called Devi Chaudarani. It was a novel written by Bankim Chandra (who wrote Vande Mataram) and the story is very similar to Dhani's.
I do not recall every bit of the plot as I read it so many years ago. It also had something to do with a girl being rejected by her in laws because of her "birth" and a band of "dacoits" 'adopt" her and soon she becomes one of them and their leader. In the meantime, the "husband" (our Ambar) is married to another girl who is not very intelligent and Devi enters Amber's household and takes care of him and his family.
Can anyone add details? Do you remember the story of Devi Chaudarani?
