Chapter Seven
Ahem looked into the mirror and adjusted his sherwani. This had to be one of the happiest days of his life. Gopi was finally out of his life forever and he was about to marry the love of his life Anita. He loved Anita because she was better suited for him. She was educated and modern. They just made better sense. He was so glad that Anita had forgiven him and agreed to marry him. He hadn't been this happy in a long time. He recollected the day Anita had forgiven him.
It had been a couple of months since he had kicked Gopi out of Modi Mansion and things were finally getting back to normal. Everyone had forgotten about Gopi and were finally moving on with their lives. Everyone except Parag, but he would soon forget her. Ahem picked up his journal and opened it to the page where he had hidden Anita's picture. Now that Gopi was out of his life he wanted Anita back in his life. Especially now that he knew Koki wouldn't object to their alliance. He picked up his cellphone and dialed a familiar number. 'Please pickup Anita please.' The phone went to voicemail. He hung up in frustration and dialed again.
"Hello." It was Anita. He was so happy he didn't know where to start.
"Anita," he finally spoke up, "I know I hurt you, but I really want to speak to you. There wasn't a day that went by that I didn't think about you. I kept your picture really close to my heart. Please at least hear me out." All he heard was silence on the other line. That pause was really scaring him.
"Okay I will meet you. Half hour at our coffee shop." Ahem was so delighted he didn't know what to say or do. He quickly threw on a pair of jeans and a red top and sped to the coffee shop. Anita was already there waiting. She looked so beautiful. She was wearing a green knee length dress. His favorite color, he knew she still loved him. He told Anita everything that had happened and how he had thrown Gopi out of his life for good. He paused to see what Anita's reaction would be. She had a blank stare on her face. He took her hand and got down on his knee.
"Look Anita, I'm really sorry that I hurt you and I promise I won't ever do it again. I'm down on my knees telling you how wrong I was and how much I love you. Please marry me. Marry me and make me the happiest man in the universe." Anita was taken back. She had tears in her eyes from his confession.
"Yes Ahem of course I will marry you." She jumped up and hugged him tightly. Ahem was happy.
"Ahem Dikhra are you almost ready. We need to start the ceremony soon. Kinjal is already dressed."
"I'm coming Mom. I'll meet you downstairs." Ahem was surprised that his mom had agreed to the wedding so easily. He told her he loved Anita and that is all she needed to hear. She fixed the engagement for the next day so that Kinjal and Ahem could both get married on the same day. He walked downstairs. Kinjal's wedding would occur first followed by his and Anita's. He was happy that Elesh and the Mehta's had not called off the wedding even after everything that had happened because of Gopi. Elesh was a really good guy and he knew he would keep his little sister happy. Elesh was already seated and Kinjal was walking down the stairs toward the mandap. His little sister really did look beautiful today. He looked at her and something was wrong he could tell. She didn't look happy. Was she happy with this wedding? She sat down next to Elesh and the priest started the prayers. Finally Elesh and Kinjal got up and took their pheras. Elesh grabbed the mangalsutra and was about to tie it around her neck when a sudden shout stopped him.
"Yeh shaadi nahi ho sakti." Everyone looked over to where the voice was coming from. Ahem looked over and was shocked to see Umaang stopping his sister's wedding. What was he doing? "Elesh you cannot marry Kinjal because she loves me. She wants to marry me not you." Everyone was shocked. Koki looked over at Kinjal, and Kinjal looked down at the floor.
"Yes Mom. It's true I love Umaang and I want to marry him not Elesh." Koki looked at Kinjal and slapped her.
"Why did you wait until now to tell me that? It's your wedding day. Guests are here. You have humiliated both the Mehta family and our family. How could you Kinjal?" Elesh walked over to Koki and stopped her.
"Maaji please don't. If Kinjal really loves Umaang and Umaang loves Kinjal then we should let them get married. I want her to be happy Maaji and she will only be happy with Umaang. They should get married right now in this mandap. Kinjal I wish you could have just been honest with me. I never would have forced you to marry me if you loved someone else. I thought you also wanted to marry me. Go. Be happy." Kinjal was really touched by his gesture. She wasn't expecting this. She smiled up at him and ran over to Umaang. She hugged him really tight but Umaang grabbed her shoulders and pushed her off.
"You really are a fool you know that Kinjal. I wouldn't marry you if you were the last woman on earth. I only did this for revenge. I wanted revenge from your brother." He looked over at Ahem and Ahem was shocked. "You broke my sister's heart and so I broke your sister's heart." He smiled in an evil way towards Ahem. Ahem saw his sister on the floor crying hysterically. He was mad. He grabbed Umaang by the collar.
"How dare you. Everything is okay between Anita and I now and you still did this to my sister. I won't spare you." He punched Umaang in the face and he fell back.
"How dare I. Why don't you take a good look in the mirror before you call me anything. If there is a heartless man in this room than it is definitely you Mr. Ahem Modi. You not only broke my sisters heart but you broke you dear little wife's heart as well. Look at yourself in the mirror. And don't think that your sister here is a perfect little angel either. As far as my sister goes, she stopped loving you the moment you married another woman. She was with me on this whole plan. She wanted revenge as bad as I did." Anita walked in and stopped next to her brother.
"Did you really think that I would forgive you so easily after you rejected me for your mother and an illiterate gawar? I don't think so Mr. Ahem Modi. I never really loved you. I loved you power, your money, and the life that you could give. And you rejected me, me Anita Sharma, and for a girl like Gopi. The best part is that your own sister unknowingly helped us ruin your life, your family's name, and your Modi Industries. Now I can enjoy your money and your power without having to deal with you or that irritating mother of yours." Anita smirked as she said that. Ahem was fuming. How did he read her so wrong? His own sister helped them. His own sister ruined his life.
"Do you understand now Mr. Ahem Modi? I'll tell you exactly what I did to ruin your life. And you and your entire family blamed that Gopi. That was the best part. Kinjal was the one that tried to stop your wedding to Gopi and she was the one that kept creating misunderstandings between you two because I told her to. That necklace that you slapped Gopi for, Kinjal was the one who ordered it under Gopi's name because I told her to. The jewelry that went missing when that thief broke into your house, Kinjal stole it to give to me not Gopi. That was just the beginning. I sent a cassette to your house knowing that Gopi would get a hold of it. In it Gopi found out about our affair and how Kinjal was allegedly pregnant with my child. I knew she would go and try to talk to Kinjal about it so I used that to my advantage. I called Kinjal and Gopi overheard our conversation. It confirmed the truth of what I had said in the cassette for Gopi. It was Anita that called Elesh to the park that night not Gopi. I snuck into her room and told her exactly what she needed to do if she wanted to make sure her husband stayed alive. That poor girl wouldn't let anything happen to her precious husband so she followed along. I still don't get that girl. She cares about you even after all the insults you keep throwing at her. I stole the jewelry and gave it to Gopi. I told her to tell Eleshji everything and if she didn't I would kill you. We all know how innocent and nave she is so she thought I was telling the truth especially when I showed her the gun. She thought that not only would her husband's life be spared, but her Kinjalben would also be happy as she could marry the one she loved. She did exactly what I told her to do and Anita was there to snap the pictures. I sent the pictures and letters out to all the guests at that party. It all went brilliantly. Your name and reputation was ruined and because of that so was your little Modi Industries." The Modi family was shocked at everything they were hearing. They had all blamed Gopi and she was innocent.
"I knew it. I kept trying to tell you that Gopi could never even think of doing something like this, but you didn't listen. Instead you humiliated her, insulted her, and kicked her out of the house." Parag was in tears. His poor Gopi had endured so much. Ahem looked down at the floor. He had been so wrong in judging the people around him. The girl he thought he loved was a liar and cheat. The girl he never gave importance to sacrificed so much for him, his family, and most of all, his ungrateful sister. Kinjal had only thought about herself and no one else. He was so ashamed of himself. He thought about that night when he had so coldly kicked out Gopi into the cold harsh world with no one lean on. He was such a heartless man. How did he not recognize his gem? God had so generously given her to him and he had thrown her away like a piece of garbage. He didn't deserve her.
"Umaang Bhai you forgot the best part of this plan. Why don't you tell them that their little Modi Industries is going to tank in a matter of days." Umaang laughed as he thought of the best part.
He looked over at Ahem and recalled the best part. "Not only did I ruin your life, I ruined your company with the help of your stupid sister."
Kinjal kept staring at her cellphone waiting for it to ring. 'Why isn't this Umang calling me already? The days before my wedding are getting shorter and shorter and everything he's done to stop it has backfired.' Her phone rang and she picked it up. "Umang, I've been waiting forever for you to call. We don't have much time before the wedding what are we going to do."
"Don't worry Kinjal I have it all planned out. You and I are going to get married and no one is going to take you away from me."
"Please hurry. I don't think I can take this Elesh anymore. How's Anita doing? Or should I say Anita Bhabhi. I'm so excited that Bhai's wedding has been fixed with her. I still can't believe Mom agreed to it. It's better this way too. Now Bhai and Anita can both be happy. That Gopi was never good enough for Bhai and I'm so glad that she left the house on her own."
"I've never seen Anita so happy. I'm very happy as well. Now we must concentrate on us and our relationship. Kinjal baby I wanted to ask you something. I really hope you can answer my questions because I have been uneasy about this for quite a while. I love my sister very much and I want the best for her. She has grown accustomed to living a luxurious life and I don't think she could do without one. I know that Modi Industries hasn't been doing well for quite a while, ever since that night. The name and reputation of the Modi family has really ruined business for Modi Industries. It's really been struggling. What I'm trying to say is, is Ahem going to be able to fulfill all of Anita's demands?"
"What of course. I know Modi Industries has really been struggling, but he's working on a really important project right now that is going to restore Modi Industries and it will flourish once again. Bhai is really confidant that he is going to get this project. It's a really prestigious company, one he has been trying to work with for ages. Once he gets that contract everything will be okay."
"I don't know Kinjal. I can't trust it until I see it with my own eyes. I mean it's really hard to believe and this is mine and my sister's lives we are talking about."
"Your life? What do you mean your life?"
"Look Kinjal, Ahem really hurt Anita the first time he married Gopi. If anything happens to my sister this time we won't be able to have any relationship with you or your family."
"Look nothing is going to happen. Bhai loves Anita. Look I'll show you the file myself to prove to you that everything is going to be okay. I'll meet you right now. I'll see you at the mall in a half hour." She quickly hung up. She had to sneak into Bhai's room and get that file. She walked towards Ahem's room and looks around making sure no one saw her before sneaking in. She looked around and finally grabbed the file she was looking for. She went downstairs only to run into Koki.
"Kinjal beta where are you off to in such a hurry? We have a lot to do still. I need you to stay here."
"Mom I had a facial already booked at the spa. I wanted to look my best for when the Mehta's come tomorrow. I mean the wedding is only days away. I won't have time for all this later." Koki agreed that maybe she should go and so Kinjal was on her way. A half hour later Kinjal arrived at the mall and found Umaang in the food court. "Here is the file. I told you everything is going to be okay. This is impeccable. With this contract Modi Industies will prosper once again so you don't have to worry about anything." Umaang smiled over at Kinjal as he read every detail of the file.
"You're right Kinjal. Everything is going to be perfect."
"You see I knew your contract was going to win, and I couldn't very well let that happen now could I have? I found out the details of your contract and now have a new contract being sent over as we speak. Now your contract will get canceled and Modi Industries will cease to exist while A & U Group of Companies will prosper with this deal ." Ahem grabbed Umaang by the collar and started beating him. Elesh grabbed onto Ahem and pulled him into the corner and stopped him.
"I think you need to leave before I have you kicked out Umaang." Elesh spoke up. Elesh felt bad. Unknowingly he was also to blame for what happened to poor Gopi. He shouldn't have opened his mouth before knowing the facts. His mom had fixed this alliance only because of her and her values. His mom was always a good judge of people.
Koki was shocked beyond words. Her own daughter had ruined her son's life. Just thinking about her Gopi Vahu made her weep. How could she have accused her of such an awful thing? What had she done? She fell to the floor. Hetal ran up to her and grabbed her.
"Koki, don't blame yourself. We are all Gopi's culprits not just you. Everyone blamed her and insulted her. Kinjal how could you. Gopi loved you like she loved Rashi and you ruined her life. Didn't you ever think about anyone else but yourself in all this? Did it ever cross you mind what would happen to everyone else? How could you?" Kinjal looked down in shame. She had been so selfish and wrong. She had blindly trusted Umaang and now she had hurt her whole family. She could hear the gossip around her. People calling her a characterless woman, and people saying who is going to want to marry their son off to such a shameless woman. Worse of all she had ruined Gopi's life. Gopi had been nothing but sweet to her.
"God what have I done." She fell to the floor, but no one helped her up. No one cared.
"Kinjal come here," Elesh finally spoke up, "I am also partly to blame for what happened to Gopi. My mom loved and respected her and I doubted her character. Gopi wanted us to get married. Gopi wanted you to be happy Kinjal and I think we owe it to her to fulfill her wish. For Gopi I will marry you today, but I will not accept you as my wife right away. You have broken my trust and you must earn it back." The Modi Family realized that he was right and so the wedding commenced. Ahem had a lot of respect for Elesh. He accepted Kinjal even after everything she had done. He may be able to forgive her but Ahem couldn't. He thought about Gopi. His Gopi. He had been so heartless and cruel to her, and she had only ever loved him. He wondered where she could be and if she was all right? He would do anything just to see her one last time. He knew he didn't deserve it, but his heart longed for it even if it was just one last look, one last conversation.
Koki sat on the bed. She was completely shattered. She had believed everyone else and not her Gopi Vahu. Why didn't she listen to her heart? Her heart had told her she could never be responsible for this, but she had trusted her daughter and her son. She sat on her bed and was disappointed. She was disappointed in her up-bringing, in her children, but most of all she was disappointed in herself. 'No I can't just sit around and do nothing. I need to find my Gopi. I need to make sure she is okay. I need to make things right with her.' Koki got up and went into the living room and grabbed the phone. Who can help her locate her Gopi Vahu. She couldn't file a complaint because they had been the ones to run her out of the house. Hetal turned the corner and saw Koki deep in thought. She went over to her and touched her shoulder.
"I know you are sad and miss Gopi, but you need to get some rest. Gopi would not be happy seeing you like this. She would want you to take care of yourself. Let's go to bed Koki. We will figure out where to start searching in the morning. Getting ourselves all riled up this late at night is not going to help much. We will look at this with a fresh point of view in the morning." With that she led Koki into her room. Hetal was also very sad. She had called Gopi her beti. She had said she was her mother and she could share everything with her and she would always support her, but she had been the first one to turn her back with she needed her the most. Every member of the Modi family was in saddened and greatly felt the loss of their Gopi. Everyone was dejected and guilty, and they were all mourning for their stupidity.
