Congrats Priya. Its your profession to ask tricky questions to your clients, 😉 😉 😉 now we will be able to ask you some questions. Enjoy the hot seat.

My first set of questions: Why did you choose to study law? Was it your childhood ambition or interest generated to fulfill your goals? Did you ever think of any other profession than a lawyer? Do case histories of your clients sometimes create distubances emotionally? If yes how do you manage to cope up?

Thanks Pranjal. 😃

Why did I choose law - Well, my uncle is a lawyer and he has been my idol since childhood.

I dont know what qualifies as a childhood ambition😆 When in school, I had no time to think of all these things. My earliest memory of me wanting to be a lawyer is when I was in class VII, we had a new teacher, who on her first day in school asked all the students what they wanted to be when they grew up. Some said Doctor, some said engineer, some did not know. When my turn came, I knew I did not want to be a doctor or engineer, and I did not want to repeat the answers given by the majority (not knowing what they watned to do), so I blurted out the first thing which was on mind - Lawyer. Since then, the thought stuck to mind and here I am.😳

Any other profession other than law - I dont think so. As I told you, till the time I was asked, no such thought entered the mind and once I had given my answer, I could think of no other profession.

Do case histories create disturbances emotionally. - Not now. But when I joined YES. It can be overwhelming when you first join the profession. My first independent case was a rather nerve wrecking case. I was not a lawyer, just a para legal then, in my second year of law college, and the Consumer Protection movement was just catching on in India. It was a case of medical negligence when a lady died after giving birth to a baby. To understand the whole case, I had to go and sit in during different complicated "deliveries", read up medical books on the subject, learn different stages of post delivery procedures and precautions, all this during the space of one month.

I was pretty much an emotional wreck after a couple of months of this trauma. I was representing the Doctor, defending him against charges of negligence and man slaughter from the family of the deceased and it was tough not to be affected by the tale in the case.

Every lawyer who enters the profession usually goes thru this dilemma, albeit under different circumstances. I had great seniors in the office, who counselled me, and I learnt how to detach myself from the case and the issues.

Today, I am not affected by the matters and manage to find humour in every situation. Fortunately, when you do commercial matters, there is little personal involvement, which is more only when it comes to family matters.
