I often wonder why Madan Mohan-ji's songs do not feature any more on SRGMP contests from C2005 onwards. The only song that I remember, and I could be wrong, was Betaab Dil Ki Tamanna Yehi Hai -- from Haste Jakhm sung by Supriya in C2005 perlim round. And boy! she had made the mentors speechless at that time. HR had said at that time --yeh gana hi aisa hai ki koi bhi gaye to etana hi achha lagata. And, ofcourse Kar Chale Hum Fida..(Vinit and Arman?)

I remember reading Sanjiv Kohli's (MM's son) article where he had said that most of participants of the Meri Awaz Suno show (talent hunt in 80s) used to prefer singing MM song because they were challenging to sing, and if sung well, would really show their calibre to the judges.

What happened now? I would have loved to see Nihira singing Lag Ja Gale or Woh Chup Rahe To Mere Dil Ke Daag Jalate Hai Or Himani Jhumaka Gira Re, Bareli Ke Bazar Mein or Ujjaini -- Naino Mein Badara Chhaye or Neha -- Rashm-e-ulfat Ko Nibhaye To Nibhaye Kaise or Sanchita - Naina Barase Rim Zim Rim Zim. We had many rounds on golden era songs and the participants could have chosen some MM songs.

All these songs are so challenging and touching that they could have shown the real talents of these girls and given immense pleasure to the viewers.

Why is this talented composer so overlooked??

I remember 'Aapki nazron ne samjha pyar ke kaabil mujhe' used to a favorite for girls in the older SRGMP contest... Same with 'Lag jaa gale'.. Its really long long that I have even heard anyone sing those beautiful numbers... Infact Lata's most beautiful numbers are with Madan Mohan I feel...

I would like to add that its the same thing with all the golden era composers.. We have not really heard them recently in SRGMP.. Recently Lil Champs had a Retro episode and it was sad to see kids choosing the hip hop numbers of the 80s over any golden era composition!

Madan Mohan ji compositions are evergreen but they require a lot of practice and riyaz..to get the sur taal correct. I do not think the show producer wants to spend that much time on them or may be the target crowd (typically age 12 - 23 years)does not relate much to those songs and consider them outdated.Just my POV.

I wish they did sing those songs..mazaa aah jaata..

I agree with Adi bhai here...

Gone are the days when the sole purpose of SRGM(P) was to showcase the best talent. Back then, the sole source of revenue was advertisements and the show apparently didn't too bad since it DID go on for 10 yrs. But its all about SMS revenue now...

e.g.
Lets talk about an episode on the golden era here. To connect with the audience, which song do you think will be better suited - "tum se kahoon ik baat paron se" from Dastak or "abhi na jaao chor kar" from Hum Dono...

Salil good point. Never actually came to my mind ever.

Maybe because those songs so much practice and really hard labour that they try to avoid them. Preparing them in 5-7 days time is in my opinion really tough.

But still it's also true. We would definitely love to hear them. It would be a good challenge and treat if a round of MM can be had in SRGMP.

I agree. I would have loved to hear Nihira sing Lag Ja Gale or Mera Saaya. Such beautiful compositions. 👏
I think Debojit sang Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho in one of the earlier SRGMP episodes (before the Agnipariksha round started) Yet another beautiful song. Wonderful singing by Rafi saab.

The songs are decided upon by Gaj ji and team. They could easily select some challenging songs from the golden era of music. That would be the real test of talent.
Nihira sang some difficult Ghazals in Adaab Arz Ghazal contsets of old when she was just a child and she won.Was she allowed to sing difficult songs?Doubtful.Perhaps her parting song after she lost--hum rahen naa rahen-was her own choice and she sang it without orchetra.

The same point was going on in my mind but I refrained from putting it down. What I feel is you need a class of people to appreciate that kind of music. And sadly these days the things are done for masses. Never the twain shall meet!

I would have loved Nihira singing "Sapne mein sajan se do baatein, ek yaad arhi ek bhul gai" from GATEWAY OF INDIA.

And I wonder why no one attemted that beautiful song from NAUNIHAL "Meri awaaz suno, pyar ka raag suno". I love this song and the way it is composed and excellently rendered by Rafisaab.
