With the emergence of a new form of indian music and the latest "fusion" craze, a lot of filmmakers have jumped on the bandwagon pretty quickly. However, the track record of those who have been able to create a successful "crossover" album are small; the last being Ashutosh Pathak and Dhruv Ghanekar for the soundtrack of Vinta Nanda's "White Noise" (2005). However, the latter album was entirely in english, so the search for a truly "indian" crossover album still has gone unnoticed, until now! Onir is a man who knows his music. His "My Brother Nikhil" album, on which he worked with Vivek Phillip (Composer) and Amitabh Varma (Lyricist) was one of the most underrated soundtracks of 2005, with the haunting Le Chale becoming one of the top songs of the year. The trio's collaboration for Bas Ek Pal is beautiful, haunting and one of the best new-age soundtracks in recent memory to be released. 3 different Music Directors have been roped in which include the very popular Pritam (guest), Mithoon and Vivek Phillip. Despite the different composition styles, Onir manages to keep a level of universality to all the songs, quite an acheivement! Pritam composes the opening chartbuster number of the soundtrack Hai Ishq Ye Kya Ek Khata. An all and all-out techno nightclub number, K.K. and Sunidhi Chauhan both rise to the occasion in their signature form. The song is all about "the moment" keeping the soul of the film alive. An energetic way to begin the soundtrack and gets listeners hooked from the onstart! Editor's Note: Although given only one track in the soundtrack, Pritam doesn't fail to live up to his reputation as a very unoriginal composer. Here, he recycles the title line of his very soulful 'Jal Jal Ke Dhuaan' from Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena (albeit with some variation). Mithoon, one of the two main composers of the soundtrack, makes his entry with Tere Bin what is sure to be one of the biggest songs of 2005, thanks to Atif Aslam (of Woh Lamhe and Aadat fame). His rendition of this soulful romantic number takes it to another level. Sayeed Quadri, who has written lyrics for the recent "Gangster", "Zeher", "Murder" and "Saaya" is a guest lyricist for the song. Needless to say, the entire song revolves around Aslam's rendition, which makes the song very memorable! The remix version, composed by Eric Pillai, is sure to make this song popular in the club settings. The electronic background is well suited and adds another level of appreciation for the song. An actually tasteful remix! Vivek Phillip enters the soundtrack to compose Zindagi Hosh Mein Nahin directing K.K. and Zubeen Garg (of Ya Ali from Gangster fame). An uplifting song, it is very tough to tell the voices of Zubeen and K.K. apart, but both do a commendable job in establishing the mood of the song. The spanish guitar is more prevalent in this song than others, which gives it a personality of its own. Amitabh Varma's lyrics also take the song to a much higher level. The remix version, by Eric Pillai, and rendered solo by Zubeen, adds a techno jungle beat to the song. His voice stands out well and does an excellent job! Mithoon returns to the composers chair to direct the title song Bas Ek Pal. Featuring K.K. and Dominique Cerejo, the song seems to be featured in an urban dance club with a more eclectic feel to it. Here electronics (most notably the electric guitar) are used not to take over the song's environment but to complement KK's singing. Dominique doesn't have much to do in the song except for chant "bas ek pal." But it's K.K. who is the real revelation here. Subtly enhanced by the electronic background, his voice is the perfect casting, and K.K. does full justice to it. An extremely progressive film song! The remix version, also composed by Mithoon, is more of a house rhythm; relying more heavily on electronic rhythms and using them to enhance K.K.'s singing. Definite new territory for hindi film remixes! The spanish guitar opens Phillip's next song on the soundtrack Ashq Bhi. Amitabh Varma's lyrics are a real highlight, subtle yet romantic. But the definite highpoint is the chemistry between K.K. and Sunidhi Chauhan in rendering this ballroom dancing song. Trumpets and the spanish guitar are heard the most within the song. It is as if Phillip is tipping his hat to older style bollywood songs (has the feel of an RD Burman style composition) through this number. Another excellent number that is sure only to gain in popularity! The film number portion of the soundtrack ends with Phillip picking up the composition wand again, returning with favorites K.K. and Sunidhi Chauhan for a soft rock romantic number. Titled Dheemey Dheemey, the performance of K.K. and Sunidhi Chauhan in the song reaches it to another level, as their soft renditions are complemented beautifully by the instrumentation provided by Phillip. The saxophone in the song is a beautiful touch, and adds another dimension to the oft-repeated "obligatory love song" in hindi films.

A dark-horse soundtrack, one that comes without any prior announcement but takes the world by storm, is what "Bas Ek Pal" truly is. For years, a soundtrack had not released that could truly complement the modern rhythm with a truly progressive indian sound. For those who are tired of the current repetitive music directors dishing out album after album, or those who are genuinely interested in a progressive hindi soundtracks, a truly quality soundtrack, will lap this one up. One of the best soundtracks of 2006!

Same theme, different deal
With Brokeback Mountain releasing this Friday, ONIR tells Pratim D. Gupta how his directorial debut My Brother… Nikhil was shunned by the film industry
The ensemble cast of Bas Ek Pal; (below) Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri in My Brother... NikhilOnir with Urmila on the sets of Bas Ek Pal

Twenty-two international festivals and nine prestigious awards later, My Brother… Nikhil maker Onir is still an unhappy man. He feels his directorial debut didn't get its due back home. And he is not even talking about the box-office figures, which have hardly matched the critical acclaim.

"I received a huge denial from the film industry and that was because of the subject I was dealing with," says Onir about his first film, which explored the life of a gay swimmer whose world comes crashing down when he is detected with AIDS. "Everyone had raved about the performances of Sanjay Suri and Purab Kohli in the film but they didn't even get a single nomination in any of the dozens of film awards happening everywhere. It's a joke, really."

What infuriates Onir further is the fact that the same people are going ga-ga over Brokeback Mountain. "When the Ang Lee film released in the US, there was so much hype around it and the awards just kept coming in," he explains. "Even in Mumbai, everyone went overboard with it being the first mainstream Hollywood film on gays. But My Brother… Nikhil was also the first mainstream Indian film to touch the subject of gay romance. Then, why make an exception?"

No wonder, for his second film, Onir didn't get sucked into the strangling folds of the Mumbai film industry. "There were many production houses which wanted me to direct a film for them," says the comparative literature graduate from Jadavpur University. "But they wanted me to make the films they want to make rather than something I want to make. So, in the end, for my new film Bas Ek Pal, I got a friend to produce the film, someone who believed in my vision. There has never been much support for me from the industry anyway."

So is Bas Ek Pal another message wrapped in a movie? "I would call it a mature, sensible, mainstream film," Onir defines his latest baby, which got completed earlier this month. "It is a very urban relationship-based film which explores the different faces of love. I can't call it a teenybopper film but you get to see all the emotions of deceit, jealousy, passion at play. The story basically revolves around one incident that changes the lives of five people involved in it. The format of the film is like a thriller but it is not a whodunnit at all."

Bas Ek Pal was, in fact, conceived much before My Brother… Nikhil but it was the latter that got funding first. Call it superstition or plain comfort, Onir's repeated his My Brother… Nikhil lead of Sanjay Suri and Juhi Chawla in Bas Ek Pal. "The reason I am working with the same people, both in front and behind the camera is because I want all of us to grow together," comes the explanation.

"However, Juhi wasn't my first choice in Bas Ek Pal. Only after I worked with her, did I start imagining her in the role. Sanjay, of course, I developed the script with him in mind."

Onir with Urmila on the sets of Bas Ek Pal

There are three other fresh castings — Urmila Matondkar, Jimmy Sheirgill and Rehaan Engineer. "For the character Urmila plays in the film — a very independent today's woman who is a glamourous civil engineer — I wanted someone who is a good performer and also very attractive," Onir describes. "And Urmila is simply brilliant in the film. Jimmy, like Sanjay, is a good actor who hasn't got his due. As for Rehaan, I had unconsciously named the character I wanted him to play as Rehaan."

But after getting such critical kudos for his first film, couldn't Onir have afforded bigger names? "See, with bigger names come images bigger than the characters and the film," pat comes the reply. "Also, I can't take their attitude of doing a favour to us directors, of us running behind them. In this industry, no one does any favour to anyone. This whole eagerness of stars to do sensible cinema is all big shit. You ask any actress and all they want to know is the hero opposite her and the banner of the film. Anyway, the stars have just looks or lineage, the acting capability is a serious question mark. I can say that my film has the top performers of 2005 — Urmila of Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, Juhi and Sanjay of My Brother… Nikhil and Jimmy of Yahaan."

Currently in post-production, the music of Bas Ek Pal by Pritam will be launched on May 15, when Onir also announces his next film, Kaash. "It's the first script I ever wrote, it's high time I made the movie," smiles the man who is on the lookout for a good story to make a modern Bengali film based in Calcutta.

BAS EK PAL kay liye Urmila has a memory lapse

Bollywood Trade News Network

We've heard of Television actors succumbing to stress owing to crazy work schedules. Well our Bollywood actors are not lagging any behind. Stress can take its toll on the best people, the latest victim being Urmila Matondkar.

As per reports in a tabloid, Urmila was so stressed out that she forgot the name of her character in one of her upcoming films. She was supposed to address the electronic media at a press conference at the Osian Film Festival. Owing to incessant shooting and traveling, with no time for lunch also, the actress had a temporary memory lapse and forgot the name of her character in the film. It was indeed sad that she couldn't really talk about her film since she mainly went there to promote it.

Kuch pal kay liye... take it easy Urmila!

New Delhi (UNI): Osians' Cinefan, the film festival of Asian cinema in the capital, is turning out to be an excellent platform for talented young filmmakers to showcase their ventures reflecting sensibilities different from the so-called mainstream cinema. After giving a "thumbs Up" to many a venture from the stable of "new wave" filmmakers like Taranjit Singh (It Could Be You), Sudeshna Roy (A Tale of Three friends), Anjan Dutt (The Bong Connection) and actor-turned filmmaker Naseeruddin Shah's directorial debut Yun Hota To Kya Hota, the audiences at the ongoing eight Asian film festival last night gave an enthusiastic response to Onir's Bas Ek Pal.

A full house at the Siri Fort auditorium marked the screening of the Urmila Matondkar Sanjay Suri Juhi Chawla-starrer, which had its world premiere at the festival last night. Speaking on the occasion, director Onir, who was her along with the entire cast of the film - Jimmy Shergill, Urmila Matondkar and Sanjay Suri - said,''having my film screened at the Asian film festival is a matter of pride for me. For me the occasion is all the more special since my earlier film My Brother Nikhil, though screened at nearly 25 international film festivals, was not screened at any Indian film festival..'' Looking at the jam packed auditorium, actor Sanjay Suri said,''it is nice to see the audiences turn out in huge numbers to watch the film. I hope similar full houses are seen at the theatres when the film releases in cinema halls.'' Bas Ek Pal, the second directorial venture of Onir the first being the critically-acclaimed My Brother Nikhil, is being screened at the Asian film festival in the Indian competition category which showcases films made in the year 2005-2006 and not yet released or screened in any national and international film festival.

Talking about the film, Onir said ''It is the story of five people - Sanjay Suri, Juhi Chawla, Urmila Matondkar, Jimmy Shergill and Rehaan Engineer- bound inextricably by an accident that changes their lives forever. Set in metropolis of Mumbai, the film explores the complexities of modern day urban relationships. Bas Ek Pal is the journey of revelations, passions, jealousies, insecurities, love and anger as each character searches for that elusive moment of happiness.'' Expressing elation at the huge response to the film at the festival, Urmila said,''it feels good when a film made with due sincerity gets its due appreciation from the audience. The huge crowd gathered to watch the film shows that there is today definitely an audience for a sensible piece of cinema.''

Bas Ek Pal could prove to be a sleeper hit

Sanjay Suri, Urmila Matondkar, Jimmy Shergill, Juhi Chawla, and Rehaan Engineer is the ensemble cast brought together by director Onir for his new film 'Bus Ek Pal'. After making his directorial debut with last year's critically acclaimed film 'My Brother Nikhil', Onir is back with this emotional thriller.

< src="http://202.87.40.52/promos/sponsor_news.js">

Director, Onir told CNBC-TV18, "A friend who saw the film says its really difficult to describe what kind of film this is. Then he said it's an emotional thriller. It's not like a whodunnit film, but still there are moments when you say 'Oh my God, I didn't expect this'."

With 'Bus Ek Pal', Sanjay Suri also returns to the big screen after his exceptional performance in 'My Brother Nikhil'. And Sanjay again plays Nikhil in this film. While Juhi played the character of Amamika in 'My Brother Nikhil', this time round it is Urmila who plays Anamika. But make no mistakes, the similarity is only in the name.

Actor, Sanjay Suri says, "Yes Nikhil is back and in a new avtaar. He has more hair, is not gay, he is straight and is passionate, intense, self-made young professional.) Onir adds, "This is my third script. I had written three years back and I am bad with names. So, I wrote all the stories with Nikhil and Anamika in mind and didn't feel like changing it."

'Bas Ek Pal's' story revolves around five different characters and how their lives change and get intermingled because of one incident. All the characters have been given different colours to identify with their personalities.

Actress Urmila Matondkar says, "When I read the script, I was completely fascinated because it was so real. And it's like what happens in real life, life is not always black and white but grey also, and that's what the film shows. Actor Jimmy Shergill adds, "He has picked up the deadliest of emotions and has put them all together - the kind that we all experience."

'Bus Ek Pal' will be first screened at the Osian Cinefan Film Festival in Delhi next week. But will Onir hit the commercial mark this time round, unlike his debut film? Onir says, "I am realistic. I don't dream about Rs 100 crore in the first week. I know my target audience and as long as it does reasonable business, it's ok."

Suri says. "The film is a typical commercial film, it's got romance, songs, club songs, passionate scenes, action and drama. It falls into the realm of commercial but not a mindless commercial film."

Will this movie change your life, wait till August 25 for its commerical release.
