Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is one of the most distinguished and successful musicians in the world of Indian classical music. His name has become synonymous with Sarod and his unique style of playing has made the instrument far more appealing and accessible to a wider audience throughout the world. Born on October 9, 1945, he is the son and disciple of the legendary Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan. He hails from a family of distinguished musicians who invented the Sarod, the present day modification of the ancient Rabab (an Afgan folk string instrument). Today, he shoulders the sixth generation inheritance of the "Senia Bangash Gharana" which traces its roots to the great Mian Tansen. Amjad Ali Khan has undoubtedly added new forms to the repertoire of the Sarod. Within the discipline of classical tradition, his innovations have created change in styles and technique and breathed new life into an ancient form. His collaborations include a piece composed for The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Fu Ku Mora, Duets with the Master Violinist Igor Frolov and also with the eminent Glenda Simpson and Barry Mason. Ustad Khan has received many coveted awards including Unicef's National Ambassadorship, The Unesco Award, Padma Bhusan, The Crystal Award, Hon'ry Doctorate by University of York, England. In addition, a CD titled "Bhairav" had been voted among the best 50 classical Albums of the world for the year 1995 announced in the BBC Magazine. His international career has taken him to most countries in the world and he is one of the most frequently recorded of Indian musicians. His two sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, have already been introduced to the concert platform. They are the seventh generation in the family to continue the rich Sarod tradition.

Amaan Ali Bangash is the elder son and disciple of Sarod Maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Born on July 12, 1977, Amaan started his public performances at the age of eight and continues to maintain the family's musical heritage. He has accompanied his father at various music festivals in India and abroad, including USA, UK, Italy, Switzerland, South Africa and Singapore. His first major solo performance in "Vishnu Digambar Jayanti" in Delhi in 1993 brought him high acclaims from the audience and press. He recently received the "Best Budding Artist 1997" award from the Indian Dance and Theatre group.

Tanmoy Bose

Born in a family of musical heritage, Tanmoy Bose is one of the finest tabla players of the new generation representing the Farukhbad Gharana. A disciple of the tabla maestro Pandit Shankar Ghosh, he has already proved his mettle both in the fields of solo and accompanied performances in various musical concerts. His duets with Khol (a traditional percussion instrument of Bengal) played by Gopal Barman earned them wide applause from the audiences in various concerts. Tanmoy has accompanied Amjad Ali Khan at various music programs in India and abroad.

Amaan Ali Bangash, carrying the legacy forward

By Agencies

He loves wearing jeans and jackets, he loves listening to Elvis Presley. Yet he is the new face of Indian classical music.

Amaan Ali Bangash , son of Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan , does not fit in to the stereotype of an Indian classical musician. He rather presents a wonderful blend of Indian tradition and modern urban culture.

Amaan, who started public performances at the age of eight, considers his father to be his idol.

"He is my idol, mentor, guide and teacher, " he says.

Recently after performing in a five-day long festival dedicated to Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, he said, "It was an honour to play for him."

He is also aware of his responsibilities being the son of a Sarod legend.

"More than anybody else, my parents are important and dear to me. Therefore, being the elder son, it was my responsibility to carry forward the legacy of my father," he says.

"There was a bit of pressure on me initially. But after all these years, I am sure my parents would not at least be ashamed of me," says the modest Amaan.

Accolades and recognitions have also come his way at a very young age. In 2002, he was honoured with the 'Provogue society's young achiever award for performing arts.' Amaan has already performed in various international festivals in Singapore, United States, Britain and Australia.

Amjad Ali Khan
Newcomers routinely become instant converts to North Indian classical music within hearing a few notes played by Sarod Maestro Amjad Ali Khan. Credited for establishing the sarod as one of the most popular instruments in North Indian music, Amjad Ali Khan can trace his direct musical ancestry over six generations of the legendary Bangash family and back further to Mian Tansen, musician at Emperor Akbar's court. Amjad Ali Khan recently celebrated his fiftieth year as a performer (he started at the age of just eight), and has been heard far beyond India in concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., London's Royal Festival Hall, the Theatre de la Ville in Paris and Tokyo's Suntory Hall.

Amjad Ali Khan
Music Without Boundaries

"There is no essential difference between classical and popular music. Music is music. I want to communicate with the listener who finds Indian classical music remote," is how Ustad Amjad Ali Khan had summed up his philosophy about music. His USP is connecting with listeners. He has performed across the world, and his collaborations - which range from composing for the Hong Kong Philharmonic, participation in duets with other instrumentalists - attest to the fact. The year saw him, besides touring the US, also arrange concerts in Delhi honouring classical music legends. Khan also has the distinction of having created many new ragas. It is perhaps fitting that when Biography, an album that encapsulates the lifetime achievements of the greatest artists of our times was on the maestro himself.

Amjad Ali Khan for thrust on music in schools

Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan wants to see schools across the world, especially in India, devote one period exclusively for discussions on culture, music and tradition so that the younger generation grows up respecting their rich heritage.

"I appeal to schools, especially in India, that one period should be set aside where children sit without their books and listen to their teachers talk about traditions, music and culture..

"... Where the children in turn talk about their feelings. About their parents and grandparents and get to realise the contributions parents make in bringing them up," Khan, who is here to perform at the Dewan Philharmonic Society, told a news agency.

It is for the first time that the sitar maestro will be performing in Malaysia. The tickets for the two-day concert have been sold out.

The maestro has given performances in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Singpaore besides the UK and US.

A teacher's duty is not only to teach English and Maths but to give time to children so that they grow up respecting traditions and values, he said.

"The seven musical notes, be it western or Indian, are connected to tuning our minds and should be taught to children. Music will help the growth of a child, they must learn and feel each musical note," the maestro, who is accompanied by his two sons Aaman and Ayaan on the tour, said.

Amjad Ali Khan noted that in the western world, music has always been in the system. "Children sing nursery rhymes when they are young, they dance... Music and dance was always given importance in schools. But in India importance has not been given to music among school children."

The Sarod virtuoso says music has come from cosmic powers and is "god created." Khan is optimistic that the tradition of classical music would live on in India.

"Especially if young people are playing classical music, it is the wish of god," Khan said, adding it was indeed a big challenge against 100 television channels when people came to listen to classical performances.

His sons too agree that classical music "was not dying out in India."

"Classical music was never for the masses, it has always had a niche audience. Earlier classical music concerts would be for 500 people now places like Carnegie Hall has a 2000 seating capacity. Of course we cannot impose on the listeners and an artiste needs to connect with the audience," Ayaan Ali said.

Asked if he liked to play at home or abroad, the maestro replied, "I like playing where music is respected and liked," adding there are some states in India which are totally involved in culture but "there are certain states that are not prepared to enjoy Indian classical music."
