Qwestji, another brilliant thread started by you! Very informative and interesting. I do hope that the offspring of Ravi Shankar, SS Sharma etc are able to carry forward their father's music.

In the picture above (a real gem), I notice that only Talat Mehmood's son resembles his father to a great extent. What a sense of nostalgia this photo evokes!

Antara Chowdhury

Antara, Salil and Sabita's elder daughter started singing from an early age. She stunned everybody when she recorded that beautiful song in the film 'Minoo' with Manna Dey....'Teri galiyo.n mei.n hum aayee'. Antara became a household name when Salil composed over 25 children's songs for her. Before Salil, childrens songs were practically unknown in Bengal besides probably some compositions by Anando Shankar Roy.These songs changed that completely and are still extremely popular. In his typical style, Salil composed some wonderful songs such as 'O maago ma' and 'Bul bul paakhi moina tiyee'. These songs, although for children, often raised questions and made sharp comments on the social injustice. Since then Antara has matured into an excellent singer, well trained in Hindusthani classical music and western music. She is also a fine pianist, a talented composer and arranger. She had to struggle hard though to shake off her original image of a singer who only sang 'Childrens songs'.

Antara Choudhury

Daughter of the celebrated composer, Salil Chowdhury, and renowned singer, Sabita Chowdury, Antara's entry into the music world has been a natural progression. Antara's natural talent was recognized by her mother, who overheard her singing at age six. She persuaded Salil Chaudhry to let Antara sing with Manna Dey in the film, Minoo, and there was no looking back for the young singer. As a child artist she sang over forty songs with artists such as Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle.

While it is often difficult for women to enter into the world of musical composition, Antara's versatility is evident from the range of projects that she has been involved with over the years. She has composed for serials like Naya Daur and Banegi Apni Baat, assisted Laxmikant Pyarelal and supervised the Hindi music for 101 Dalmations. Composing for her first serial, Naya Daur, was a challenge because many felt that as a woman she would not be able to compose music appropriate for the war scenes. But Antara proved them wrong and believes that women have to assert themselves to find their space in the music world in roles other than artists.

A student of many eminent musicians like Pt. Ajay Pohankar, Shri Krishna Chandra Banerjee of the Gwaliar Gharana and Pandit Jasraj as well as her parents, Antara has several albums to her credit. Her most recent album, Madhur Smriti, is a tribute to her father, Salil Chowdhury, which was released in 2000 by Times Music. Her other albums include Surjer Khoje and Chuk Chuk Railgadi.

In addition to her albums, Antara has sung for TV serials like Sargam, Amanisha and Hiyar Majhe, hosted Geet Gata Chal with Shekhar Suman, and been a playback singer for innumerable Bengali and Hindi films. Many years ago, Antara wanted to be a history professor but was told that lecturing to large audiences would ruin her voice. Today she feels that music is her life and she wouldn't want anything else.
