thx Angie. now let's shatter some of the illusions about the old sgmp. let's compare apples and apples.
first, the duet rounds in that old format sounded horrible. they just had the live orchestra cover up all the boo-boos. in actuality, the pairs were often out of sync and were often cacophonous. the quality we perceived came from having the live band, which always adds an exciting dimension to the performance. they wld often cut away the camera to the band members, show the drummer, the other instrumentalists. all that provided an illusion as to the actual singing quality. it was still performance, though of a different nature, not necessarily singing quality. the duet singing in emaet is much more synchronized and polished sounding than anything we had previously.
as for some of the series contests, anyone remember the world series hunt? that was a joke. the girl from jamshedpur was far better than all the others, as was the guy who eventually won. some of the singing in that contest was pathetic. most of the contestants from that contest would not have and did not even make it to c2005.
as for the 2 new contestants a week format, sure we got to see two new people each week. but that's like having quantity instead of the up-front 32-singer quality we got out of c2005. zee can recycle some of the folks they short-listed through their India-wide hunt in c2005, but do we really want to see those bottom performers trouped out in the name of "fresh" singers?
some folks have a problem with the performance aspects of the new formats. but zee has to also make money and in any case, that does not say anything about the quality of singing we have actually had with the new show.
in fact most of the arguments around here have really come about because all the 32 or 16 singers were really very good in c2005. on any day, they sounded better than the others. that was quality!
