Featured Artiste: Sajjad Hussain
Some facts and anecdotes about Sajjad Hussain mentioned in this programme:
- He was born in village Chhota Mhow in (now) Madhya Pradesh in 1899.
- His father was also interested in music, and the first instrument Sajjad learnt was the sitar, when he was 9 (IIRC).
- At an early age, he learnt and achieved mastery over the sitar, sarangi, jaltarang, surbahar, Spanish guitar, Hawaiian guitar and numerous other instruments.
- His fluency and accuracy over each of his instruments was such that even prominent exponents of classical music like Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, and even 'ustaado.n ke ustaad' Baba Allauddin Khan acknowledged his genius and were enthralled by his performances.
- He came to Bombay in 1940. After 4 years, he got his first film, 'Dost' and in 1946 came '1857'.
- The 'yah Naushad ka gaanaa nahii.n hai' admonishment to Lata was touched upon, and then, ironically, Naushad's
tribute to Sajjad Hussain. There wasn't anything very profound about the tribute, just that it was quite effusive.
- Anil Biswas's tribute to Sajjad came as 'the most original composer among all of us, who never used anything but his own compositions'.
- He had a spat with Dilip Kumar while working on the film 'Hulchul' and announced that he was leaving the film and left in a huff. It was left to the producer (or director) to convince him to reconsider his decision.
- For the 'Sangdil' song 'yah havaa, yah raat, yah chaa.Ndanii' his requirement was that each interlude piece
was to have only the sitar and the sarangi playing (apart from the tabla). An interlude was played specifically to demonstrate this. The sitar and the sarangi were both played by eminent exponents of the respective instruments (names were not dropped). However, Sajjad was not happy with the first trial. Well, not just the first, he went on to have 17 trials before finally being somewhat convinced that he had got what he wanted. Even then, he wasn't exactly pleased with the end result.
- The likeness (not spelled out as a lift) between 'yah havaa, yah raat..' and 'tujhe kyaa sunaauu.N mai.n
dilarubaa' was touched upon.
The following songs were played in the programme:
1. 'badanaam muhabbat kaun kare' (Noorjehan, 'Dost')
2. 'Gam-e-aashiyaanaa sataaegaa kab tak' (Suraiyya, '1857')
3. 'kaalii kaalii raat re, dil ba.Daa sataae' (Lata, 'Saiyaan')
4. 'jaate ho jaao, ham bhii yahaa.N vaado.n ke sahaare jii le.nge' (Lata, 'Khel')
5. 'yah havaa, yah raat, yah chaa.Ndanii' (Talat, 'Sangdil')
6. 'vo to chale gae ai dil, yaad se unakii pyaar kar' (Lata, 'Sangdil')
7. 'phir tumhaarii yaad aa_ii ai sanam' (Rafi, Manna Dey, Saadat Khan & chorus, 'Rustom Sohrab')
